Cam should get more credit here because she wrote an absolute banger of a song. Combine that with Home Free's incredible vocals and like for many others, this is my favorite Home Free song.

Chance adds so much depth to Home Free ... love it when he solos !

I love all the guys but Chance is my favorite, his voice is so smooth.

They chose to sing this in its original key as sung by Cam, a female country singer. Just proves their lack of having a female in the group is no detriment--they just let their BASS handle it! 🤣 LOVE the versatility of our amazingly talented fellas!! 🥰. Every member of Home Free could absolutely be a solo ⭐ star ⭐ but their harmonies together are MAGIC!! ❣️🎼🥰🎶❤️

Back when this was released, Tim's higher register was much less well-known - the track came out on an album months before the video, and there were plenty of arguments who was singing those first few lines. As you may have heard, Chance sang bass with his previous group, Street Corner Symphony - having two talented bass singers has given Home Free so many more options in their arrangements.

Ya, Chance is no stranger to Bass. He was the Bass Vocalist for his previous group, Street Corner Symphony.

Now that you've seen Mayday, you have to see "Mayday Live" - it will blow your mind (guess what - they can allll beatbox). Rob & Austin's duet of "Nessun Dorma" will leave you gob-smacked as well - yeah, they can sing opera too. I love your enthusiasm & positivity! At the risk of repeating countless others - just adorable! Keep being you!

The only version of Mayday live that I've found was a bit of a mess - Tim's voice in terrible shape for the opening, Austin off pitch and the second half descending into chaos, with something wrong with the sound balance on top of it. There were very good reasons why Mayday was removed from the song list for live shows. It needs voices in great shape, and the complexity of the last section needs exact timing and pitch.

Chase so often is in the background... Whenever he comes to the fore it such a treat

In fact over the last few years he's had more leads and shared leads than Austin. Consider - Dive Bar Saints, Folsom Prison Blues, Blue ain't Your Colour, Workin' for a Livin', Born in the USA, Brothers in Arms etc etc.

This song is by a female artist Cam. What is mind blowing is they sing it in the same key and octave!!!

I think what you are calling breaking in Austin's voice is actually him flipping up into his head voice, which is the point at which his voice could break if he weren't an amazing technician.

AND SO …. another surprise from Home Free! There is no “typical” sound to them. Always different, always original, never boring. They will always ad their swagger, yet keep true to the original. Their ability to produce so many differences, yet not be type cast as - oh yah, that’s Home Free is amazing.

Yes, a song with surprises. Tim who goes tenor, Austin and Rob who also hit different notes than usual, the inhuman vocal percussion and as a great end to the surprises the incredible bass of Chance. Simply fabulous

I don't think there's anything different from Austin's accustomed range.

Chance has a 4+ octave range, which would be really impressive if he wasn't in a group with a bass with a 5+ octave range... But the Chance-lead HF songs are *gorgeous*, as is basically anything on his solo channel and his collabs with The Hound + the Fox on their channel.

Now you understand why it's so important for new reactors to wait on hearing Mayday. All 5 do such a spectacular job on it, including Adam. It's one of my favorites.

exactly, new reactors have to pace themselves and learn the various tricks and techniques the group uses before reacting to Mayday, just to understand how good it truly is

I agree, Austin's voice just has something special. Every time he sings there is something in his tone that gives me full body goose bumps!

Home Free can do anything, and if you not listen to Brothers in arms you MUST SEE LOVE FROM A Fries and thanks for sharing 💖💖👏👏

So, now that you've watched Chance be the bass, you should really check him out in Street Corner Symphony, his last group, where he was the bass. I love their versions of Come On Eileen, and Down on the Corner from their performances on the Sing Off (they also do a Beatles medley, that's amazing as well), but the album versions are good too.

I was just sitting here waiting for Chance to blow you away! You did not disappoint! Lol! They really are all very versatile. The only explanation is that they are aliens from some musical planet where all the beings have supernatural musical powers. If that's not the reason, well, I got nothing. Mind blown. 😂😂😂

You would enjoy the "from the vault" version of making of "MAYDAY".

Adam Chance was formerly the bass singer in an a cappella group called STREETCORNER SYMPHONY. They've done covers of "Madness", "Royals" and "Uptown Funk". All are EXCELLENT!

Another spectacular performance that's often overlooked is their cover of John Mayer's In The Blood...it is super cool.

Brother you need to listen to a Chance lead....then youĺl understand why so many Home Fries are HUGE fans of his....some of his leads (this one he even directed) I can outrun you, Finally Free (a particular favorite of mine), Cover Me Up (very special one because of the surprise after the video part is over - you gotta keep watching), Born in the USA, Dive Bar Saints, and Chance's Country Roots - not a song but a great video of Chance at his childhood home --it is so cool !!!!

Lovely reaction. May I recommend 'Moonshine', that they recorded in their own back yards in lockdown? It's so overlooked but I love it. It shows a bit of personality, I feel.

I agree, it's gorgeous. Never got much pushing by the band or their PR people, even though everyone sounds amazing. One of my favourites.

Rob and Austin were singing in the same key as Cam, the female singer who did the original.

Have you already heard Rob and Austin singing opera? That’s a great one.

Chance's voice is so silky, and I wish I heard more of him. I LOVE this version. As always their harmonies and arrangements are wonderful!

Will you start doing those Chance leads now? “I Can’t Outrun You “, 5 part harmony, hauntingly beautiful, and Chance directed the video. “Cover Me Up “, and let it play out as there is a surprise. “Some Girls Do”, “Yours”, “Blue Ain’t Your Color” shared with Rob. I push for Chance because he just doesn’t get the amount of attention as Tim and Austin, which I don’t understand. His voice is so warm and smoky. I don’t remember if you’ve done “Helplessly Hoping” yet. Pure 5 part harmony, and another of Chance’s babies. The songs that have his signature are some of my favorites. Another good one is “Dive Bar Saints “. My personal favorite of these that I’ve suggested is “I Can’t Outrun You “.

Plus he does lead sections in American Pie, Folsom Prison Blues, Brothers in Arms, Everybody Walkin' This Land, One Man Band etc... reactors always seem to snooze on the Chance tracks (even though there are a bunch of them). I love his voice and the versatility he brings to the group. They definitely lucked out getting him as Chris's replacement. He's added so much extra depth to their sound, and opened up a ton of flexibility in how they can do their arrangements. I totally agree, more Chance please!

Everyone says Chance doesn't get enough attention but every time he's mentioned everyone rushes to say how incredible he is (which he is). After 7 years perhaps we can stop with this stereotyping of Chance as the underdog. But i must agree to some extent about the frantic fangirling over Tim every time he opens his mouth, and it has got to ridiculous levels in some quarters.

@@patriciamcl54 Well... that's one way to look at it. I personally have never seen Chance as a stereotypical underdog or a stereotypical anything. I was only pointing out that many reactors don't really see what he can do for a while because most of the heavily requested songs for new HF reactors tend to be Tim and Austin leads, with a few Rob songs thrown in. I don't have a favorite out of the 6 guys. I enjoy all of them and could never pick one over the other. I don't really understand the saltiness over people geeking out on music that they love, but to each their own I guess.

Lyle from Patrol Nation watched this years ago (as in before Tim and Chance switched on the regular). He didn't just get out of his chair, he disappeared. 😂 I laughed so hard. Great that you reacted to this song after knowing the Home Free band more! It makes a much better reaction, just like you just did! Some reactors just react to the song without knowing the surprises in the video . For example like you said right off you saw that Tim Foust the bass was singing in the tenor range which is the same range as Cam who is female, the original artist. You also figured out that Chance, the baritone was singing the bass which he has can sing low in the bass range as well. I like Home Free's cover of Mayday much better than the original song from Cam.

I was getting nervous that you would pause right when Chance did his part, but thankfully you backed up to get a running start into it. I love seeing reactions to that low note! All of Home Free did a great job on this song! I know others have mentioned some works where Chance gets low - one of my favorites is 'A Whistling Lad' from The Hound + The Fox (ft. Adam Chance). In addition to being a spectacular and beautifully written original song, I love Chance's "thunderous low drone notes" (as described by The H + The F). Another great reaction - thanks!

They are AWESOME aren't they!! I think that their choice to do this song just proves that there is nothing that these guys can't do! Each Home Free member brings their own level of talent to the group but when you put all five of them together pure magic happens! I love love this group and enjoy watching you react to them as it reminds me of when I first heard all of these songs and how I reacted to them lol You just have to check out their cover of Helplessly Hoping, this song and video is so beautifully done and actually has all five of them singing without any percussion sounds. You will once again be blown away by how versatile they are!

It has been said Adam Rupp has an incredible voice. In order to do what he has to do with his voice in beatbox, his singing voice has to be a fine tuned instrument. He sings every once in awhile. His voice is gorgeous in Home Free’s “How Great Thou Art”! And where they filmed that one will blow your mind!!

Wait till you watch the live version of 9 to 5 + beatboxing! You will fall over, no joke! 😁

Fun fact. Adam Chance was previously a bass for another acapella group. I believe the group was Street Corner Symphony.

When Chance hits that low note, it just sucker punches you right in the heart. WHAM !! This is my favorite song of theirs's. I think they did this just to throw all of us off kilter.

Not sure if anyone told you this, but Chance was also in the same season of Sing Off with VoicePlay and Home Free--he was in the acapella group Street Corner Symphony. He was their bass and it's how they all met. There's a song on VP's video list that has the duet with Chance's old group.

Tim never sang bass in this. I had to watch many times to see what harmony and countermelody he was doing. He was only tenor. But chance dropping to respectable low bass was a treat.

Actually, Tim says that Adam Rupp has the widest vocal range of anyone in the group. So, not sure you will hear Rob or Austin sing Bass, but you might hear Adam Rupp do it!

This song is one of my favorites. So glad you waited to react to it. Your surprise at hearing the switch ups in the voices was great. Tim can sing in a beautiful higher tenor voice along with Austin & Rob. And Chance can hit the lower bass notes when needed. And Adam did a fabulous job as always with his vocal percussion. This song is sung by a woman Cam, so they sung it in a higher key to match the original.

There are some really cool videos out there comparing the bass ranges of various of the a capella basses. The amazing part to me is that Chance and Tim have very nearly the same range. So, yeah...just ruminate on that for a bit. :)

I have just recently discovered the amazing talent of Home Free. I have also recently discovered your reactions to this group and i can't share your reactions enough! I love every single one!

It's a bitter sweet fact that Mayday doesn't have the pay off for newer reactors as much any more! Thats because there is so much great Home Free content available they usually have already been exposed to Tim's range before they get to Mayday! Especially if they reacted to Tim's solo songs!

Them all doing everything is pretty true. You need to watch 9 to 5 but it HAS to be the live version. If you watch it you will figure out why it has to be the live version.

Im going to throw a suggestion out there. you should check out one of the groups that really laid the groundwork for the modern acapella group, Rockapella. There is a version of the group that has been active over the last decade but the original group goes back to the 90s. IF you want another bass on your radar Barry Carl should fit the bill.

Austin Looks like a Young Kris Kristofferson! He could be related it's spooky in a great way! *chuckle Yeah Austin teases that he's working on his Bass. I don't doubt it. One day Austin is going to just drop a bass and Tim is going to love the looks on our faces. They spend a ton of time with each other. So I have no doubt that someday they will sing something for us with all the parts swapped and flipped around even Rupp. Check out a live version of Mayday now, yeah it's camera phone caps but Marcia G has some that are better than average quality and she has Mayday Live so please check it out I really want to see your face on that surprise!

Great reaction. This is a fab number from the boys. I believe Chance was the bass singer in another group before joining Home Free. This is the only number I've heard so far from them where he gets a bass solo but I'd love to know if there's more out there that I've not yet found. He gets anice little baritone (I think - don't know the techy stuff about ranges etc lol) solo in "Hillbilly Bone" though - would love to see you react to that. I suspect it might be something other than the vocals that get you in that one! 😉😅
