    Pianist's two cents here - not only they animated him playing correct keys but notice how they animated his piano technique. He has perfectly relaxed arms and wrists, he plays with the weight of his arms - if you wanted to produce a nice, sonorous beautiful tone and maintain good phrasing as a pianist, this is the way to do it.

  • @angelredvivar

    @angelredvivar

    2 жыл бұрын

    So depending on the height of your wrist, it produces a different tone?

  • @geuros

    @geuros

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@angelredvivar not height directly, the movement is there to relax your hand, to play using your weight rather than force. That helps to achieve a nice, round, rich, pleasant sound for the ear, while using force and being stiff usually leads to much more metal like sound that is very unpleasant, literally punches you in the ears and it's actually less active, sounds as if it was shorter (not like 2 seconds instead of 5s, it is rather both 5 seconds, but the better tone keeps high resonance for longer time while the worse one feels damped immediately). So if you ever wondered why pianists do these crazy things with hands, this is it - to stay as relaxed as possible, because virtuoso pieces are nothing short of a sport, and to achieve the best possible sound colour/timbre.

Back when animators had to invest the most time and effort into their projects, they really went all out to make it special. Hell, animators are very overworked without pay to compensate, so there is no lack of time or effort put into animation nowadays. And no, just because we have access to digital animation doesnt mean its not hard anymore.

It is also worth noting that there are two versions for orchestra. The second one is by Müller-Berghaus and it was not signed off by Liszt, since it was made after his death, as far as I am aware. The easiest way to spot the difference is the beginning. In the Liszt/Doppler version the opening theme is played by a solo trumpet. This short came out in 1947, in movie theatres, and people paid money to enter the dark room and watch 7 minutes of Tom playing the piano. They also had to wait on average 6 months at least to watch the next episode of Tom and Jerry. The amount of skills needed for cel animation and modern 2D animation stay mostly the same, just that cel animation is more tedious due to painting and drawing cel sheets in a traditional manner repeatedly. It's also easier to learn animation today than before due to the overwhelming amount of free resources, so there's nothing stopping you from starting now. Also offtopic, but 3D animation shouldn't be underestimated either. It's easier in terms of saving resources, but it's still hard in terms of skill especially depending no the program used.

    The Cat Concerto was one of the most legendary episodes of such a legendary cartoon. The entire episode was, as it implies, takes place with Tom performing Hungarian Rhapsody No 2 and waking up Jerry as he continues playing. The usual chaos ensues but the genius is of the fact that the episode itself is one singular song and the hijinks are based completely around the song's beats. It's comedy gold for every reason.

  • @BambiTrout
    @BambiTrout2 жыл бұрын

    This was actually likely the result of a time-SAVING exercise. Old school animators, rather than drawing everything from scratch, would often use real life footage of actual humans and then simply trace over the hands and body, adding the cartoon features and exaggerating where necessary. Hiring a pianist for an afternoon cost very little in comparison to the cost of animating, and tracing over film footage is far easier and requires far less skill than perfectly animating a character by hand without a live reference. It would take just as much effort, if not MORE, to animate the piano incorrectly, unless you were able to reuse old reference footage from a different song. Nowadays, things are flipped. Animation is cheap and pianists are expensive. Plus, due to all of the much more advanced computer tools and drawing software, a lot of the work of animating can be automated and simplified to the point where a good animator can make a semi-realistic animation of someone flapping their hands over a piano in an afternoon. It takes significantly longer and costs more to hand animate over pre-recorded footage, or to do a motion-captured animation, than it does to just animate something that looks vaguely correct to the average non-piano playing viewer. For a mass-produced show like The Simpsons or Family Guy, that extra cost and time is not considered worth it, and even in most animated movies, it's seen as an unnecessary level of detail that wastes resources that could be applied elsewhere. The exception is where the piano playing is a core part of the movie - i.e. Soul.

    Pre-scoring animated films does add a certain life to them that is rarely seen otherwise. It's one of the key differences between, say, Akira and almost any other anime. I can see the difference even when animators are doing one-off sequences with characters to be ADR'd later. Animation tied to a real performance, be it voice or music, just pops more.
