The GameCube button layout correlates to how often the buttons are used, the A button was the main button in most games so it’s the biggest, the B button was the secondary button so it’s smaller but still a separate button, the X and Y buttons were the least often used buttons so they wrapped around the A button, so the layout of GameCube controllers were made so that while pressing the A button you could keep holding it and just slightly move you thumb to press the and then the B button is placed for similar purposes, so that’s why they have that funky layout

I actually got the 8BitDo Lite controller partly because of this review because it works with Raspberry Pi (and therefore RetroPie) and since it works with Mac, it technically works with iOS 13 onwards through the Bluetooth switch option in the accessibility menu. It’s a bit weird to get it set up but once it is set up, you never have to set it up again as it will show up in the regular Bluetooth menu in iOS. And since the individual buttons are the same size as the JoyCons, the button caps from Skull & Co fit just fine. The Lite is actually perfect for games on the iPad (especially Apple Arcade), a fair number of the emulators in RetroPie, and plays NES/SNES on Nintendo Online.

I actually have that Emio Switch Pad with alternate layouts and it's pretty good. I use it for emulation on my PC and it works really well. The only problem is that the C-buttons in the N64 layout are too close together and that's a little unconfortable. You can accidentally press 2 or more C-buttons at the same time at the heat of the moment. Other than that, it's really good.

I own the 8bitDo D-pad controller and it’s excellent for platformers like Megaman 11, Hollow Knight, Shovel Knight, etc. I could also see it being great for Link’s Awakening

  • @FerdinandJosephFernandez

Honestly, I get cheap 3rd party joycons cause I'm afraid of getting joycon drift on my first party ones. The quality is pretty hit or miss. One has too large deadzones on the analog sticks, and the in the d-pad, if you press the left too hard, it can also touch the metal contact for down at the same time, so it registers as down and left. Another has terrible motion controls, like I move straight up and down but the game registers a wobbly movement (but it's perfect otherwise so I use it when the game doesn't need motion controls). If you didn't like the ipega one, try the Dobe TNS-18133, it's very similar to that ipega but improves on some things.

I do love the Split Pad Pro....when they work. But unfortunately they very quickly end up feeling loose when plugged in (though that may be my OLED Switch as I've heard more than a few other people have this problem even with regular joycons) and even ignoring that, I use the Split Pad Pro to play Smash a lot (I prefer a Pro Controller to a gamecube controller normally anyway) and I've gone through now 3 sets of them because my left stick's grip ALWAYS GETS WORN OFF BY MY SMASH PLAYING. It's now happened three separate times just from normal use. I'm currently looking at an alternative that's similar to the split pad pro but a little.....less cheap feeling?
