You seem to have forgotten the REM in Montreal. The first phase opened in 2023. The next phase is due for spring 2024, but many transit advocates expect that it will be delayed until fall 2024, putting it in the fourth quarter. Given how far along they are, I do expect that it will indeed be delivered in 2024. With the extensive tests that they performed before opening phase 1, they have a very good grasp of what kind of problems to expect and how to solve them. The airport branch will be last to open, most likely in 2027.

Yes, the up-to-date information on the REM says that it will open "at the end of 2024", but considering how much the first phase was delayed due to testing issues etc., I wouldn't be surprised if it actually opens in 2025.

Personally, I would prefer to keep the F on 63rd St. Wasn't the whole point to relieve massive overcrowding on the 53rd St. line? Having said that, I wonder if, after all of this reconstruction in the 63rd St. tunnel if trains will be able to run any faster under the East River.

You forgot two things in Paris: 1) The opening of the extension of circular tramway line T3b, from Porte d'Asnières to Porte Dauphine, including a stop at the major interchange station Porte Maillot, set to open in spring 2024. 2) The opening of the first phase of RER E's Western extension, also set for spring 2024, with 3 major interchange stations, 2 of them being of the Paris typical, iconic and gigantic cavernous underground cathedral type. The first stage is a 8+ kilometer long tunnel extension under central Paris to the newer business district West of the core, that serves 3 stations, extending from the currently existing Hausmann Saint Lazare (Auber Opera Havre Caumartin) gigantic underground complex. New stations are : Porte Maillot (interchange station between RER lines C, E, metro line M1, plus tram circular line T3b roughly at the same time) with a huge cavernous trapezoidal shaped lightvwell under a skylight ground-roof and lined by large "caged" escalators. La Défense CNIT (interchange station between RER A, E, metro M1, tram T2 and Transilien lines U & L and future M15, possibly M18), built under the foundations of the large CNIT expo center, with a gigantic volume, a mezzanine and grandiose stairs. Nanterre la Folie (interchange with Transilien but I don't remember which lines, future metro M15 and probably others like the extended future M18 and the recently officially proposed M19 as the first extra expansion of Grand Paris Express), it's a mainly open air station partly in a trench, with 7 or 8 tracks if I recall correctly and mid lihe terminus functionalities. It's transit-a-palooza in Paris...

As a native New Yorker, good riddance to the Metro Card. Stations have always been littered with lost or expired cards. It's so much easier to just be able to tap your phone or smart watch. And even if you don't have those, you can still tap a card too. I remember when it first started to roll out in just a few stations in 2019 and I wasn't sure how I felt about it, but it really is just so much easier, and also cleaner.

Though it's not really that Canada let Bombardier be sold for problem reasons but for financial ones. They've done the same thing with Bombardier Air division's C series aircraft which became the Airbus A220 for a symbolic price. It's like Canada sold some of their main assets under the guise of "private" companies, instead of trying to save them. Bombardier had many issues in the last years but if Canadian / Quebec governments had stepped in, it would have been different. Instead they never hesitated bailing out banks after the late 2000's crisis but they let their main industrial assets be bought for cents on the dollar. Thankfully Airbus and Alstom are top players, which guarantees job security for the foreseeable future. The A220 sells like hot cakes and the Canada / Quebec factory will continue to produce it for years to come. Bombardier rail had a lot more issues that are giving Alstom a hard time to clear backlog, production and quality issues, but it's incrementally improving. At least the good news is that Alstom is the top specialist in rubber tyred trains and they should figure out the Sao Paulo tyre issue fairly quickly when Alstom teams step in. (For quite some time since the acquisition of Bombardier by Alstom, apparently teams continued to operate as two different companies, now they seem to be exchanging teams to solve the main ex Bombardier production issues.) Here in Paris we had huge issues with the Z50000 train (aka NAT or "le Francilien") when it was introduced by Bombardier. It's was the main type to replace old stock on Transilien lines (suburban trains) and the support type for certain RER lines. It was an order for 360+ trainsets (single level, each 7 or 8 car) and the first years were so problematic that the operator had to send them back to the factory for modification. It went so bad that SNCF and the region suspended deliveries With more than 1000 serious breakdown incidents per million kilometers versus a contractual maximum of 80 per million, coupling issues, total breakdown problems trapping passengers inside, etc. A total nightmare for the first years of introduction... The old rolling stock was working way better than the new trains they were replaced with and passenger advocacy groups demanded to keep the old trains as long as the new ones were unreliable. Thankfully it was eventually solved after a few years. The main issue was that Bombardier kept hasting designs into rushed production, after dangerously underbidding competitors so much that it wasn't financially sustainable anymore. There was a similar problem with the Bombardier Aventra family of trains in the UK that were plagued with issues. Alstom is in the process of correcting all Bombardier inherited issues, especially in production and design rushing, which led to delays across all Alstom's production lines. There's an interesting presentation by an Alstom UK director called "Golden Spanners 2021 : Alstom Perspectives : 10 months after the Bombardier Purchase" which gives an idea of the challenges faced by Alstom when taking over the UK sites of Bombardier. Including "the good, the bad and the ugly", pointing out some of the issues.

Hi there, great video! I might quickly mention some stuff about upgrades in Australia as it’ll be a very eventful one! The Melbourne Metro tunnel will be opening in around September 2024. It’s the first major extension to the network since the City Loop in the 80s and will ease congestion on the City Loop quite significantly. It features 5 new stations, 2 of them in the CBD. And will provide more connections to North Melbourne. There’s also new trains and CBTC signalling on the Sunbury, Cranbourne, and Pakenham lines. The Sydney Metro City & Southwest Line will be opening up next year too. It’ll be a fully driverless metro system. It’s the first new line in the City since 1979 and the first new line across the Harbour since 1932! It’ll decrease journey times, decrease congestion, and allow for easier access to the CBD which has 4 new stations, and also the surrounding inner suburbs. There’s also the Parramatta Light Rail in Western Sydney opening up soon. And in the next few years, you’ll be seeing the Cross River Rail open up in Brisbane who will be hosting the 2032 Olympic Games. It is the first major extension in pretty much forever to open in Brisbane. Easing congestion on the entire network. There are also new lines opening up in Perth as apart of MetroNet. There’s also a new tram line coming soon to both Canberra & the Gold Coast. And 2 new Metro lines in Sydney! And I haven’t even started talking about New Zealand with everything that’s happening in Auckland!

This project is indirectly linked with the Kruunusillat project, which will see the longest bridge in Europe to ban car traffic entirely. In the case of the E Trains, I personally feel that the MTA should make an improvement in terms of being rerouted via the F Line and have an alternative route to access 8th Avenue. I was clearly thinking if the MTA can propose constructing another tunnel where the Q Trains currently run before they steer left towards 57th Street - 7th Avenue. I do know that Q Trains will still follow its pattern to go to 57th Street - 7th Avenue, but that new tunnel should only become access for E Trains that need to be rerouted. Instead of continuing towards 57th Street as its next stop on the F Line, that new tunnel can provide connection to the 8th Avenue Line with 59th Street - Columbus Circle being its next stop. From there, E Trains can resume regular routing towards World Trade Center after 50th Street, but definitely those rerouted trains will stop on the upper level. in this case, E Trains run via the F from 21st Street - Queensbridge and Lexington Avenue 63rd - Street, and via the new tunnel to/from 59th Street Columbus Circle. In addition, Q Trains can also benefit themselves with the new tunnel as it will become the first time in history that they run via 8th Avenue, and it can definitely be an alternative to traveling towards Coney Island. This is only if an emergency takes place and the MTA needs to reroute trains along Queens Blvd in order to provide better access.

A huge oversight was not including the opening of the LAX automated people mover that will connect to the Airport Metro Connector Station (under construction) allowing a direct transfer to LA Metro's K and C lines in 2024. It's a huge transformational public transit rail project in the 2nd largest city in the USA. A Metro connection to LAX has been discussed and planned for decades. How could you have missed it? It's so obvious that not including it seems deliberate.

Damn it seems like a lot of these delayed projects came from a contract with infamous Bombardier Rail. It’s no wonder why Canada let them sell off the rail division to France & Alstom. They really built up the TTC’s and São Paulo’s new lines in such a way that allowed them to cut corners. I hope these projects are properly done but also done promptly!

  • @KyrilPG
