Bro let’s be real here people are so delusional nowadays to think you need over 1000 hp to have a good time. It’s bananas that people think this way or even to daily drive a 1000 plus car or truck.

Those 5.7 vortec engines were damn good work horses. I wasn’t the biggest fan of the fuel injection system that they used but they are definitely 500k engines. The transmission on the other hand that is a different story.

I have 3 OBS pickups. They all have the o.g 60e, over 600k miles between the 3, none of them been rebuilt. All serviced @ 30k miles and they all have a big trans cooler. I've pulled my race car/trailer with my 96 Z71 since 1999 lol. Most people don't believe it but my uncle bought it new in Feb 96, and it's the o.g trans. He bought a new 99 Z71 Silverado in 99 and I bought it with 19k miles. It has 188k now, still hanging in there. My other 2 OBS trucks are still shifting fine as well. I guess I've been lucky because so many people break them. I also have a 72 c10 with a 6.0/4l80e swap, I definitely wouldn't put 500 hp in front of a 60e, that's a disaster waiting to happen. I've always treated my trucks like an old horse, ride it easy and pray she makes it back to the barn.

Head gasket blew in my original one on my two door Tahoe so I got a new 5.7 vortec from summit racing but the one I picked up has an extra hundred horsepower over the stock factory one from the dealership. So I know I'm going to be happy once it's in 350 hp stock. After I add a set of headers, intake manifold, tune, should be approaching 400hp

And the second fact the best part of the vortec is the fact that it has cheap high-flowing cast iron heads if you're buying brodex head you might as well start with an old school high nickel block with an actual 4 bolt Main and a forged crankshaft

I was looking for a comment like this. It only makes sense to keep the vortec heads. All the old school sbc guys want those heads and for a good reason. They just flow well as is, especially well with a little bit of porting.

  • @thisoldshtbox3626

Lol “high nickel” blocks….a proven myth! The amount of difference in nickel was so minimal that it didn’t make any structural difference! It’s been proven many times throughout the years. And older Vortec blocks are 4 bolt mains(depending) plus they are factory roller blocks and already have the best factory high flowing heads, which actually out flow a lot of aftermarket heads with the same specs!

There's nothing wrong with working with the small block Chevy, and the 350 vortec is a good foundation to work with. The LS guys who hate on the 350 are full of it! Not every Chevy guy has to have an LS to go fast. The small block Chevy isn't dead.

Exactly i laugh at the LS guys that put stock Ls motors in stuff just to get 300hp because they think its so hard to get 300hp from a sbc yet a stock L31 dynoes 300hp anyways and the sbc is cheaper to build NA up to 500hp

i have people tell me all the time what i should have built or i should have used an ls then they ride in mine and they say theyve never rode in anything like that. sounds like a good reason why its better i did what i did. even the ls fan boys with their ls swap get smoked by me. one of the more surprising ones was a turbo one everyone was oogling at a car meet. he tried racing me after wards and he never spoke to me again. its hard to argue with the usefulness of the sbc when ls motor makes peak torque between 3000-5000 rpms. they say its better in every way but when hauling a load i dont think neutral dropping it is the way to get moving.

On 93 octane, 3000 stall, mild cam, driven to the track and back home. With a more aggressive pill, on slicks, straight outta the hole on a 200-250 shot with some race gas and timing adjustments, it could have been a lot quicker. MANY a mustangs, Z28, SS, T/A 4th gen, and a lot of other local barely street cars got smoked and then we took the case of beer and the 20-100$ winnings and rode around the rest of the night bumping the system, 2x MTX 12s/amp, with the t tops out.

I you have ever experienced a working Q-jet, its amazing. Small primaries with huge secondarys make for snappy acceleration. Central float bowl helps feed under hard cornering. It's almost perfect for flat track racing. IF you can find a working one.

I came here to see if anyone noticed that! Lol! The 96+ 5.7/350 are better everything than the 87-95/350. Their issues are mainly oil pump, intake gaskets, head gaskets and strange grounding issues for the engine effecting the tbi/temp sensor. If this is all sorted you've got a dependably great runner for many miles! I've been sorting their issues for well over 20yrs. Any decent machine shop/engine builder can drill/machine to a 4blt main. I currently have one in my shop for a project I'm building. Same thing can be done with a 4.3 as it's exactly the same but with 2 cylinders chopped off. Those can be lots of fun!

Engine wouldn't Rev above idle and white smoke was pouring out of the exhaust. we figured the engine was shot, so my dad took it old school for me. carbed 4 bolt main 350 and th350 trans, because the trans was also bad. But it would fly! Only 117k on it when my grandfather gave her to me I miss it terribly great tough motors tho! Trust me!

For 1 some of the vortec heads are pretty decent they compare up to if not better than first gen lt1 heads. 2. holley stopped making carburetors to focus solely one their EFI systems. now eldebrock makes the 7150 and i maybe the 7500 series carbs same as the holleys but with more mods. You can do the whole cams heads intake swap on just about any v8. But if you don't have a good short block, it's a huge bet and if I was gonna do all that you might as well build it to your what your goals are. It does work sometimes, the LS is a testament to it, but if it doesn't pass a compression test or a leak down. Don't bother doing HCI swap on anything for that matter. Maintenance and little mods plus professional tuning can go a long way, but this is a quick way to make power if you have the time, money, and know how. And that goes with the minor stuff to to a basic HCI swap.
