I’ve been using leds for about a decade, initially the blurples, then full spectrum. I never felt the finished plants were as good as the ones grown under 600w hps. In the last few years I have been switching to hps late in flowering, the last 2-4 weeks and feel the trichomes get larger and terpenes more complex. An old grower put me onto this protocol. He believes that because the parentage of most current day cultivars were bred and selected exclusively under hps for decades this changed the plants dna to perform better under that spectrum. Now I don’t have any scientific data to prove this, but I know which I prefer when talking indoors.

My biggest question is and it's funny because I thought about this today. I've been growing outdoors for 30 years. I'm 50 years old. Back when I was young. You wasn't all worried about trichomes production. Our plants back then didn't have near as much trichomes as the plants today. So why was the weed so good back then? Now you have to have your flowers loaded with trichomes to get it for the smell and taste. I think it's because of all this crap people feed them. I mean they are just a weed so now you got to add all of this stuff to them in order to get anything good. Really sucks. I wish the old school strains would come back

UV light can produce more trichomes but can also stunt the growth of the plant. Some people balance this out by using far red light. I personally prefer to only use small amounts of far red light (like 2% to 3%) so the colas stack better. So I wait until after the stretch during the flowering stage. Then I add UVA for a couple hours a day until harvest. Now when you change the light you will change everything else you would need. More Co2, water, nutrients, and most importantly silica. Adding this will increase aspiration which will increase heat and humidity. It is always a good idea to keep a close eye on your grow environment, but this is extra true when trying anything new with your grow.

  • @rayjay8322

I have used HLG's supplemental UVA fixture on my HLG DIABLO 650R in two runs of Autos. In the first run I ran the supplemental UVA light at the same cycle as the main light with 18/6. That was definitely too much. While it did not burn the plants, the plants were much darker in their normal fade. Since I grow organically, all my girls get a natural senescence and the associated color..................ie the 'fade'. On the second run, I waited until first week of flower and made it 12 hours mid cycle running 18/6. That was still a bit too much. And in both runs, there was a definite increase in trichome production. Remember that UVA is on the blue end of the spectrum and it is photoactive to the plant, so it will tend to keep the node spacing more close and tend to keep the plant squatter. Really don't think there is enough wattage there to make a visible difference, but it does depend on how much blue you already have in your spectrum. With the HLG light, that's not much of a concern. The next run in that tent is photos and the light cycle that I will use on the supplemental UVA is 4 hours mid cycle of 12/12. Outside, that's where the most UVA is naturally occurring, so it makes kind of sense. The HLG Supplemental UVA White fixture easily mounts on the Diablo with two screws and two clips. Like everything else from HLG it is a quality piece. Knows Candy from Thwenty20 Mendocino is quite a frosty girl, but with the added UVA, it was an absolute avalanche of frost in the last run. She was the hardest hitting flower on the initial hit, that I've grown so far including photos. I don't squish much Flower, I'd rather make live rosin, but there was an average of 3 to 5% increase in Rosin production in squishing flower. You should always wear eye protection while working in your garden, but don't have your UVA light on while working. With your main light on, you definitely will not see it. With the main light off it kind of looks like a bright black light. And there you go Scotty! Call up them Tennessee boys and get yourself two HLG 350 Diablo and that UVA supplemental light and throw that into a 4x4 tent and GET AFTER IT! Mount that UVA light in between the two others and run it four hours mid cycle 12/12

So for veg and to get the most out of your plants if you lay or connect these lights to the bottom poles angle them to hit all the lowers it will increase growth equally not just the tops thus creating more tops from lower growing branches that aren't getting light that we usually cut off

Also, with new evidence surrounding bacteria and their impact on our beloved Trichomes and also safety issues, please ensure you are getting the correct type of UV. (The wrong type of UV lights have been responsible for vision damage.) And I would imagine that's on the low end of possible outcomes. Been growing the same strain for the past 5 years. The last 2 grows, I've added UVA and a CO2 generator. I can say these 2 additions have greatly increased how frosty and fat the flowers turn out. I only use the UVA for the last 4-5 weeks of flower, starting off with 2 hours of UVA and gradually increasing the time every 3 days by 1 hour until they are getting 8 hours of UVA. I add in the CO2 generator when I flip to flower as it's not really needed during veg. DIY CO2 Generator: Sugar, Water and Bakers Yeast, mixed into a cup and set on the tent floor. Replace weekly.

I don't bother to turn them on any more. They do bother human eyes. UVC can burn eyes, skin, and plants. It's dangerous stuff. Some UVC lights are the wavelength that makes ozone. UVC lights are great for disinfecting rooms and tents. My CLW brand UVB lights are flimsy China-made lights with plugs that fit so poorly they fall out by brushing against them. My UV .02.

Hey Scotty, in regards to dots, how do they function with wicking automatic waterers? Since the dots arent exactly having water poured over them to release what you want at that certain time, are they still releasing nutes the correct way? I've had a bag for a few months now and going to start a new grow and want to use dots but Id like to know if wicking lets nutes release how they're intended.

Are you growing in SIP buckets or Deep Water? Dots work great in SIP buckets, no need to put water on them, just mix them in with your media But they don’t work well with Deep Water Hydro. They need to be mixed in with a media by the plant Does that help?
