These Korean dogs are natural treasures, but divided between North and South!

You can watch this video at koreanow.com
Two national icons, one from South Korea and the other from the North, are praised for their favorable characteristics such as loyalty. The Jindo and the Pungsan may be dogs in a land that has a mixed relationship with canines, but they are absolutely treasured. In fact, they are used to promote their respective side’s national image. What has their role been on the Korean Peninsula in recent years and how different are they in reality?

They are still very primitive dogs. Not cuddly, and humans rank about #10 on their interest list, with the top 9 spots being prey. Awful off leash, but still a great companion.

Does South Korea still have dog meat farms and dog soup restaurants? Yes. 보신탕. My girlfriend’s adopted dog was born of dogs rescued from such a farm.

I wonder if this sudden interest in Jindos have something to do with 올리버쌤's channel. Lately, his channel has been focusing on his two relatively newly adopted Jindos.

Many are illegally smuggled to the US. Please research the breed as they can be dog aggressive, stubborn and expert at running away with a high prey drive. There are rescue groups in CA. They are amazing dogs with the right owners.

Chogiwa61 _ I am calling out the misinformation. My Korean girlfriend is an animal rights advocate, and she has taught me a lot. We have hiked out in the countryside and saw these same dogs shortly chained to dog houses in the middle of farms. They bark so sadly.

Chogiwa61 _ I also have seen one chained outside of a restaurant in Gangnam! This is the ritziest place in all of S. Korea. We called an animal rescue service and they asked “does it have a roof? Does it have water?” Since the dog was given minimal care, the rescuers could not help.

I'm half Korean, don't feel bad or guilty. As long as you take care of your baby, and are responsible and enlighten others on Jindogae history, there's nothing wrong in having one as a family member. Truth be told you probably treat him better than a lot of Korean people treat thier pets. Although most Koreans love and cherish thier animals. And hopefully, there will never be a situation that the Korean dog breeds will ever face extinction. If so people who own them will be the ones helping to revive the breeds. This is my hope for the Polynesian dog. Although thought to be extinct, the Polynesian has a few surviving members still in existence in corners of the islands like in the kingdom of Tonga, where I saw some being eaten for food, like they were in pre contact days. And no Polynesians mostly do not consume dog meat throughout Polynesia and dogs and cats are kept as pets, but in far off isolated corners they are still kept as a food source. I hope someone will see the value in these dogs and revive the breed, their most closest relative would be the Papua dog.

If the Jindo is a protected breed in South Korea, how is it that there are so many dog meat farms filled with them? I have two rescued from South Korea. I'm pretty positive one of them is a Pungsan. I always said Jindo until I saw more photos of Pungsan dogs. They say Pungsan are very wolf like, and she is very wolf like. Born and raise in a dog meat farm, she was extremely traumatized and still won't let me pet her, I've had her for 5 years. My other rescue is Milky, who was horribly traumatized, thrown into a boil pot alive, but rescued. You can see his rescue on KZread, (Milky Finds His Way, the Directors Cut.) Milky is a Japanese Spitz, or maybe a Volpino Italiano. One day I may have Milky take a breed DNA test. Can't get a swan from Maya. My friend Nami Kim rescues them. Her page is, SaveKoreanDogs.Org
