I called a young man from Craigslist to do brakes lines. He arrives, jacks up the back end of the car with a hydraulic jack and proceeds to lay under the car. I scolded him. I ran to my back yard and got him jack stands as back up along with the hydraulic jack for safety. I told him to never lay under a car that is held up only by a hydraulic jack. I said, "Don't do that to your parents and your young wife". I really yelled at him. I hope he got the message. I've seen jacks fail. I know one man who was found lifeless by his family crushed under a car. You guys out there, if you work on a car, use two or even three support systems. One main one, and one or even two extra back up support devices. You have a death wish if you lay under a car with only the hydraulic jack holding it.

Agreed! I personally had 3 hydraulic jacks fail so I know what you're talking about. My grandpa was once working on his car and the jack suddenly went down and it was for the jack stands that the car didn't crush him. I always use jack stands and also put a tree stump with flat bottom as well as the spare tire every time I jack up the car. As CrazyRussianHacker says "Safety is number one priority".

My dad would use bumper jacks when I was a kid. I used to worry and think that it was so unsafe. One day someone from our church whom was a mechanic, died from using the same type of jack. Car crushed him. He was very young and had several kids. They were so poor that they held the funeral in their own home. I was like 8 years old. I remember going up to see the body because all the kids were there poking at him. One kid tells me, "Touch him he's cold!" So I did, and he really was cold. I guess the adults understood that we were just innocent kids being curious because they didn't scold us. I'm 38 years old now and till this day I can still remember seeing tears streaming down his wife's face. At that time I didn't understand her pain but now I can only imagine. Interesting that Harbor Freight did a voluntary recall on their stands while every other vendor of Chinese or even cheaply built American stands has not. A boatload of similarities in construction. So what happened to O'reilly's, Autozone, the big box stores? Check them out, you'll find that the much denigrated HF stepped up, the others, nah, they'll take their chances.......with your life.

I dislike how most jackstands you buy today have the "toothed" design. I like the ones my dad gave me from the 70's which were basically a heavy duty stand with a triangular base but it had a thick steel tube (probably 1/4" thick) that would move up and down and you would put a pin in place (much like you do with a trailer hitch) to lock it in place. That thin was not going anywhere. the ones like today, with the "toothed"/notched design I don't like and feel they are less safe than the old style pin-style ones like I have. Of course the ones that were given to me that I mentioned aren't light by any means, but they are sturdy. I believe each one is rated for 4,000 lbs so more than plenty for any job I've done. As with most things, they don't make them like they used to.

Sure enough the jack stands started to shift on that asphalt, then the whole thing came down.
