My personal favorite was always the fake Flame Wingman from the Mad magazine that said to just banish all of your opponent's monsters one at a time, and if they told you to stop, just call them a cheater.

Most of these cards were actually translated word for word in Italian and sold as the most ignoble fakes you could imagine, Italian BEKAS is extremely funny since that was translated as the Italian word for "Draw" (Pesca) but with a B as the first letter, that card canonically in Italian is called "🅱️raw"

I had a fake Japanese winged dragon of ra when I was in 4th grade and I was unstoppable with it lol nobody knew how tributing worked past lvl 5 so I would just tribute one monster and summon it and then I would convince everybody that the ? Attack and defense meant that it had unknown power and was too powerful to be destroyed

Calling the devil is definitely a match winning scenario

Big fan of how apparently everyone and their mom owns a copy of Bekas

One of these that I came across at one point, was one of those counterfeit versions of a real card, just *very* badly translated, with the firework foil and stuff. It was a fake copy of Sonic Duck, but the fake copy was named something like "super-fast acceleration machine" or something ridiculous like that. And I just loved that apparently the duck having a bucket on its head in the artwork was enough to make them think that it must be some sort of machine.

"Yeah, I guess I'll chain Griffon Rider" is now my goto response for demonic attack, thanks.

I had a fake call Monster of the Hunted Reborn Basically a continues trap The effect was revive a monster every turn from either players graveyard

I have the Ra and Slipher sphere mode. I've been buying fake boxes to try to get all 3. I have a whole collection of fake cards, but the one i'm chasing after is "It's a huge scorpion with evil soul". lvl 7 trap card mokey mokey that has "tremendous potential"

As a kid I had a fake ancient elf. The only difference? it had 25 more attack than a regular Ancient Elf. I guess somebody got really mad at the Ancient Elf mirror match.

an idea I'd like to see MBT discuss is Archetypes like Beetroopers and Vendread who had extremely promising or powerful introductions. only to crash and burn when their second wave of support turns out to be a dumpster fire.

New idea for twitter thread; cards that have been well balanced for years. My original thought is book of moon was played for over decade but never felt broken or (I blelieve) hit the limited list

Are there even any at all? Can someone come up with an actual answer? All I can think of is Monster Reborn but only because its pretty much always been limited to 1, and just the fact that it had to be limited to 1 already kinda doesn't fit the criteria. Hand traps like D.D. Crow perhaps? Effect Veiler? Idk

I really love the sound attribute, I remember seeing it on a lot of fake cards.

One of the weirdest cards I own is: a German version of Kaiser Glider, that has artwork, name, attribute, type, level, ATK and DEF of Kaiser Glider, and the effect of f-ing Barrel Dragon.

I remember I had a beckett yugioh magazine that feature the Egyptian God cards. I cut the images out, pasted them to the backs of actual cards, and brought them to school the next day. Everyone was amazed and we desperate to trade. Long story short, I ended us scamming people for trades. I almost got away with it, if not for that meddling cheap elmers glue. The cards started peeling and people weren't happy. lol

I hate to tell you but Dasher original name is Dash Guy in japanese/OCG. D-Hero Dashguy to be specific.

My brother found a Ravioli, Lord of Pantslessness", when we first moved into our fourth house. It was torn up kind of torn-up but me and my brother loved it. Don't know what happened to it after we moved next. Wish I remembered what the text on the card said. It was the coolest fake card me and my brother had seen.

My personal favorite fake card, which I can no longer find, was called Retrieval of Spellbook. It was a Continuous Trap that added back a Spell from your Graveyard to your hand every time you drew a card, which would've been asinine enough in the era I had it (Pot of Greed, obviously, but also, getting back Raigeki during the Draw Phase was some hot nonsense, and nobody plays backrow removal in playground formats), but an even more amusing idea is imagining someone passing it off as real when the actual Spellbook archetype came out.

I played the Feather Dusters in Playground. I was the only one to do so.

I got a Level 3 Hundred-Eyes Zombie Dragon with 3k atk/2500 def that is literally just rainbow dark dragon for zombies with the art for Hundred Eyes Dragons (as you can guess). I also got bulbasaur randomly

I like how the text on the fake Gaia states "With a horse ,who walks quick asl wind ,he has strong offensive power ,and is also the highest knight in this game." It's type is Fighter-Tribe btw

One of my friends from highschool had a fake Dark Paladin, that listed its fusion material as Dark magician + Buster Bolder, he was never able to summon Dark Paladin.

I keep trying to buy the red-coloured darkly big rabbi because I remember it from my childhood, but every time I buy one for a reasonable amount the order gets cancelled by eBay. It is too powerful for me to possess I guess.

The French card at 6:23 is Zorc (as in the villain from the final arc of DM, not the ritual monster that actually exists based off the manga exclusive Monster World arc) complete with stolen manga artwork of Ahknadin summoning him, and (from the sound of it) effect text telling you to gather the millennium items.

I remember seeing cards like these at a flea market/rummage store, before. It was so ridiculous the fakery they were passing off as real cards. Though, now I have to wonder: the fake cards that UDE made that cost them the licensing deal from Konami to distribute Yugioh, do those have any intrinsic monetary value? Clearly, they can't be played in the game, due to being fakes, but since they're an important part of Yugioh history, do they have some sort of collector's value?

6:44 That translation of the card effect text is interesting. It kinda makes me wish that there were cards that within their problem solving card text they gave a lore reason as to why they’re doing their effect. Like, Demise, King of Armageddon and then the effect reads “You can ritual summon this card with the end of the world. You can pay 2000 LP: Demise will swing its mighty axe to bring about the destruction of the world and destroy all other cards on the field.” I want a lore reason as to why Ash Blossom just kills itself to stop your opponent from getting a card from their deck.

I just want a lore repository. Some place you can go and just read flavor text and card lore. None of the lore sources we have are properly curated and fleshed out. Its like playing Dark Souls lol.

This is such a nostalgia trip, I love fake cards so much, I'm getting teary eyed from the playground memories

This dollar store that no longer exists also sold bootleg packs when I was a wee lad. I wish they were the fun kind of fake now, but they were just bad quality versions of normal cards. :(

I remember having one that was called "Wrecking Earth". (Fake of Smashing Ground) "Destroy one monster with the most powerful defence in the opponent's hand." Oh but it gets better! Despite being a magic card, it had listed monster stats: Level 2, 2400 ATK, 1000 DEF. When a friend and I tried playing with fake yugioh cards, we called it a "Spell monster": They are played in the back row, they technically aren't "summoned" they are activated, so Trap Hole wouldn't work on them. Stupidly powerful since there aren't a lot of Backrow removal in fake cards, and being able to flood the field with 2400ATK monsters is pretty good.

Unironically my Yugioh journey started with the fake structure decks bundle for two players. And I had obviously no friends to play with, but hey I was impressed by shiny cardboard when I was 5, and I am still impressed by shiny cardboard at 23.

I had a fake BEUD but the stats, level, name, and everything was right. Somehow that was enough to convince my friends it was genuine despite it not having any series numbers of Yu-Gi-Oh logos anywhere and the back was like a ms paint version of the cardback. Oh and also it only had two heads in the art.

I remember a friend pulling a fake XYZ Dragon Cannon on me whose text read 'present your hand cards to destroy 1 card on the field' ('present' presumably being some kind of very badly translated 'sacrifice' equivalent which would line up with the original effect) so he'd just show me his hand a couple times to blow up my board

"It feels like there's an easier way to do this" 7:03 As a matter of fact there is. This monster has infinite ATK and DEF, and while the effect seems to suggest that summoning it via its summon condition is a requirement to win the game, nowhere does it say that this card cannot be normal summoned

I got an idea for the next one for you: cards that are better in other decks than in the own archetype

I know someone who once had fake cards in their deck. For the most part they looked identical (albeit with a weird font), but he had one called Millennium Jewelry that made 0 sense. Somehow he didn't realize they were fake

Haha this made me look through my old cards to look for fakes and I found Superconduction Dinothere (Super conductor tyranno) Defence Fly Dragon Seven Step (Armed Dragon lv7) Variable Armour (Grasschopper) And Japanese God (Yamato no Kami) which I think is the best because it reads "[Warrior + Soul] The card can't be normally Summoned specially until a soul monster on the tomb is out of the game. When you finish special summon the card returns to hand cards owner. When the card destroys opposite monster, a magic or trap card is destroyed opposite."

How about every card that has created an infamous ruling nightmare? Pole Position FTW.

The best fake card was a 4 star Red Eyes Black Dragon. An infinite attack monster is clearly op, but only 2400 must be legit!

I remember in 2005 i went on holiday and me and my brother each got a deck of fake yugioh cards, my brothers were normal cards, just badly printed, but mine were ridiculous, like 300,000 attack and nonsense effect, traps with atk and def etc, just nonsesne but 6 figure attack stats, but then my brothers had darkly big rabbi, so infinity >> 300,000

this video reminded me that I used to have fake cards that were just anime only cards. I have unfortunately lost all of them over the years due to both moving homes and not caring for them after I realized they were fakes, the only one I can remember clearly is an alternate art for a trap card called disgraceful charity which was busted on the playground as we would set it than use graceful charity and/or card destruction then immediately activate the disgraceful charity to get everything back

Parents in the mid 2000s saw these cards specifically and we got the D&D “Satanic” treatment 🤣

I actually have a funny story about fake cards. I want to say it was about 14 or 15 years ago now, there was this 10 year old kid who came to a locals with his father who had a fake card in his locals deck. It was an Exodia with the Pentagram art and it was something along the lines of "Supremely Ultimate Jewish Savior" or something (what's up with all the fake Exodia cards being Jewish? XD), and the kid and his dad, themselves, were Jewish. The judge had a brief conversation about fake cards and they were receptive and removed the card. It was a locals so the Judge just allowed them to remove the card from the deck and continue as normal. The kid and his dad kept coming back and this is where the story takes a turn that you normally wouldn't expect. The kid actually took the time to learn and play the meta and was a regular top finisher in locals (He topped with Lightsworn when Lightsworn was all the rage). His dad also played and played a bit more of a casual deck for the time, but was honestly a really chill dude.

People will usually laugh at any mention of fake cards but these served an important role in my (and others in my local community's) interest in yugioh growing up. Every kid (especially boys) my generation have seen the animes. yugioh and GX were shown on public local television and with localized dub. It was also the time when anime shows were aired during the afternoon right when children are coming home from school. I don't know about other cities but official OCG/TCG cards never reached us. We played yugioh using "fake" cards that were sold near schools or in toy stores. There range from low quality ones with tons of misprints to "class A" cards that were almost an identical copy of TCG cards. One rule though is that we never use self printed cards just to complete our collection. (we also prefer to not use "ultra fake" cards like those featured in this video) We played with those cards in school all the time during the shows popularity and even long before it ended. Even today, a ton of kids in my generation have stashes of these counterfeit cards lying around. Also, theres still "locals" that play with these cards that hold regular tournaments around here. That's why Im really thankful that masterduel arrived. It opens up official yugioh to a lot more players.

In high school, one of the guys I'd play with had a polymerization with the text of Gazelle King of the Mythical Beasts

Ah yes, this reminds me of an unforgettable moment I had at middle school. A kid had a Slifer card. He showed it to everyone and was obviously very happy with it. Then my friend was like "Can I see it for a bit?" and he just ripped off the sticker :P Damn middle school days were savage, man.

We had a booth at a carnival that sold 5 Dollar packs filled with god cards, exodia, some high level monsters. As far as I know, most cards exitsted in theory, but all were insanely fake, even having wrong backgrounds and beeing printed on way to thin paper. And riddled with spelling errors and wrong effects. But I was 10 years old and summoning Ra against your enemy in village meta that consisted of summoned skull beatdown was satsifying.
