These Drum & Bass Tracks are 116bpm... but is that possible?

What I’ve come up with after watching: A polyrhythm will have 3 types of drum hits: ones only part of the 1st rhythm ones only part of the 2nd rhythm And ones that are part of both rhythms (usually it’s just 1st beat) In a 2:3 polyrhythm, the 1st rhythm is counting to 2, and the 2nd rhythm is counting to 3. Most Drum and Bass tracks have a partial 2:3 polyrhythm in the drums, but with at least 2 important differences from a normal one: 1: It’s in the last 3 beats of each bar, and doesn’t start on the 1st beat. The bar is 4 beats total, but the polyrhythm only starts on the 2nd beat. Therefore, each polyrhythm is broken up by an extra beat at the beginning of each bar. 2: A 2:3 Polyrhythm has 4 drum hits before it repeats. But the DnB one is missing drum hit #2 (that’s the pause in the drum pattern). If the polyrhythm starts on beat 2 of the bar, it would normally have drum hit #2 on the 3rd beat of the bar. Take that sample you made, and delete the 1st beat of each bar, making a 3 beat per bar pattern. You’ll hear a 2:3 polyrhythm that’s missing drum hit #2, creating a partial polyrhythm that could be interpreted as having more emphasis on rhythm #1 (counting to 2) instead of #2 (counting to 3). Sorry this is a bit late. I didn’t even know this was a issue, but it makes sense that this could happen. It seems like this is just a more complicated version of getting double time and half time mixed up (likely involving a 1:2 polyrhythm). Great video! I’m glad I was subscribed!

As for video ideas, I’d love to see you test this idea out, and if it doesn’t work, oh well (but I’m pretty sure it will 😎). Another video idea is that I’d love to see your take on the true BPM of Dubstep. I’m in the 70 BPM and halftime camp, but the majority of people believe it’s 140 BPM (could be subjective tho).

174bpm / 3 = 58. 58+58 is 116bpm. It’s picking it up as two-thirds the actual tempo. Probably because the snare and kick aren’t four-on-the-floor like House, Techno and Trance, etc.

So is this something that happens exclusively to dnb or does it effect other genres with less uniform drum patterns e.g. jungle, breakbeat, garage, breakcore/IDM stuff? Great video tho, nice to see ya back!

I haven't used algorithms in a while to detect tempos so while I bet the 33% deviation can be found in other genres or tempos of music, those examples don't come to mind or happen as often in my recent memory as it does with DnB

Ahh yes, infamous 116 BPM. Good times trying to find tracks and thinking you got more options but SIKE.

wait ok my prediction without watching any of the explanation part of the video: the algorithms are somehow only detecting the kicks and not the snares, and the kicks on their own when interpreted to be on a 4/4 pattern end up being somewhere around 116 bpm

I found Magnificent Seven by The Clash is usually around 116-117bpm in the version I listened to, and before I even watched the video, I tried to find a dnb beat that fits with that speed.

Hi, enjoyed the video. got one question tho, I guess those are pair of m50x’s. What audio level are you blasting those? I always blast it full with basses cranked up in eq settings and concerned about hearing loss lately if I continue to use it that way.

You're actually spot on. They're ATH-M50x. Generally speaking I think I used to play music pretty loudly but as of late I've been dialing the volume down a lot more when working on stuff or just casually listening to music. I think the best rules of thumb is that if you plan on listening to music for a long period of time or it starts to feel uncomfortable, even without pain, you're better off lowering the volume, and especially when I'm working on a mix or project for multiple hours, there isn't really a reason for me to be blaring music the entire session. That said, always best to seek the advice of a professional like your doctor for a more informed opinion.
