These Devices Let You Hear Through Your Skin
Medicine has limited options for restoring lost hearing, but recently, inventors in Japan and the U.S. have been trying a new approach: vibrating devices that allow users to "hear" through their skin.

I am hard of hearing. Anything and everything out there that can help us hear and communicate better will feel appreciated. However, they should NOT be expensive. Especially when it comes to hearing aids and hearing devices.

How does it make any sense the dark skinned guy likes music if he cant hear or hear almost nothing?.
@kutlwanolekaowa6110
2 жыл бұрын
I think the guy you're talking about gets vibrotactile feedback when he has the wristband on. So, instead of hearing the sound he can actually feel it. Rewatch the video from 4:40 where the CEO of Neosensory explains how the wristband is tonotopically arranged from low to high frequencies similar to how the cochlear works. Assuming that the guy (Phillip) has a severe-to-profound hearing loss then my best bet is that he can literally feel the sound/vibrations on his wrist when he's playing music and that is how he gets to enjoy music. I think in the beginning he had to learn to associate certain "vibrations" with certain sounds e.g. sound vibrations of a baby crying are different from when someone is speaking, hence he could sign "baby" when they played the sound of a baby crying. They also mentioned sensory substitution for the Deaf in the video

@@kutlwanolekaowa6110 Ok so my qualm about it is correct I guess. That saying he enjoys music is a stretch in the sense of how it's really meant to be perceived and enjoyed.

@@johndor7793 It's definitely different than the way we hearing people perceive music. However, sound is frequency interpreted through our ears. Through the skin, they are perceiving those frequencies too, just on a a different medium so to speak. It's still possible to love the rhythm and be inspired by it.

Okay, this is how human beings should be, and coming together and invent things that helps others humans who have disabilities. Thank you guys for inventing this great technology.
It warms my heart to see such advancements in sensory innovation directly correlated to the brain for the neediest of the humans amongst us. I give my deepest gratitude and blessings to all the creators involved in this phenomenal humanitarian developments.
it wud be interesting to add another device and test for directional sound processing. I can see an application for military and civilian security using the map of vibrations to monitor motion detection around a building and instantly know where it is coming from and other factors. also for use in home security to monitor a home for trespass while sleeping and where the trespass was detected. I can see this as an alternate way of receiving audio data for hearing people. to be able to have multiple streams of audio data and tune in to what you want to listen to, merely by focusing your brain on the selected vibration. I can see stock traders using this to monitor a particular 1 or more stocks that they are following for prices. I would like to see the test results of it being used by stock traders. And could it effectively be used in place of a speaker on a phone to conduct a conversation? And what is currently the maximum number of words it has been able to decipher and what is the maximum speed of words coming in can it decipher so far?
This is by far some of the most interesting science and engineering to me.
Kudos to the people working on this!
That's crazy. I love it!!!! I hope this product become available to all with hearing problems. Plus that vest could help me figure out how close I am to people or objects. Sooo cool
Love the innovation and the editing is great
Philip is absolutely adorable. His smile is contagious! 💖
I saw that TED talk some time ago and was excited by the possibilities. I'm really glad to find out they, and others, are developing the idea into real products. I love the idea of extending senses. Decades ago i read about a belt that kept you aware of the direction of north, to make navigation and self-location easier. Something like these products might make it possible for blind people to navigate in open environments more easily. Yay for all of this!
Hand gestures of Presenter adds great clarity for special audience. Great job 👏🏼
This really moved me. I hope research on this will continue to bear even greater fruits. Thank you very much!
hes able to hear emotion in other peoples voices,, thats beautiful 🥺🥺🥺
That's so nice.i hope it's cheap enough for most deaf people
Proving that real understanding comes from multiple sources at multiple times and that you may lose understanding through the lose of a sense but there's more data in sound than just the ability hear. This is a fantastic piece of equipment.
I’ve just had an insight: wearing two wristbands would enable the guy to have some stereo perception? I think that in this case, he would benefit even more, while walking down the street…

When he said "Adding new senses to what we perceive reality is", I wonder if that's the same feeling as to people who has synesthesia says that they can taste color or see music or even smell textures. I personally would want to experience the feeling of feeling the vibrations from the colors of the rainbow for example. How depressive purple can be, how angry red is, how relaxed yellow feels like, how scared black feels etc.
This is mind-blowing and meaningful at the same time.

I love your videos about those inventions. But how about subtitles with some contrast? White text on a white shirt... quite hard to read at least for me with a visual impairment.
Take it to the next level with multiple sensors. Just multiple of the same sensor or different sensors on different parts of the body. The deaf will have better hearing than most of us.
This is what science is for.
Thank you. But how can it be more commercially available?
this is amazing tech.
You know if you think about it, blind and deaf people are like main characters in animes where they can "sense" people's presence around them without looking or knowing their location. They're like real life superheroes!

Can it be on a smartphone too? Is the taptic engine on an iPhone precise enough for this type of application?

I wouldn't think so as the sensors aren't dispersed throughout the device, and the microphone wouldn't be precise enough either. However, that being said, I am sure that the skin would be able to adjust to it and work just as well! Better start a GitHub account!

amazing !!!!!!!!!!
Wait, so a new patient will have to learn from beginning, right? To learn what vibration pattern and strength means what? Like learning to understand a new language
They pretend as if brain plasticity, which is in my opinion the driving factor behind this principle, is almost instantaneous. Well... brain plasticity is a very very slow process, so it will take many many years for a person to have some real benefits of this device.
Pair the vest with an FPV drone and you basically have sixth sense like what the Assassins from Assassin's creed have with their eagles.
Hearing Wrist band coupled with Ai yields better detailed description of the environment. Ai enabled high sensitive hearing Wrist band could far outperform human audible sensory.
i love this
My first thought is what people with synasthesisea would make of it. This obviously comes in different forms and there would be ne single answer. But I'm confident it would register in tastes and smells aplenty. As for me, I'm harking back to the Bionic Man and scenes from Daredevil where a visual representation formd from ...acoustic stimuli. Moreover, music would never be quite the same again too, for I'd be experiencing on would allude to a physical, almost visceral basis.
I would really love a variant of this product being turned into a new platform for gaming💓💓... The experience would be mind blowing 🤯🤯🤯🤯
Enhancing the human mind begins with changing the way we sense the world around us. Those with sensory disabilities provide us with an outlet to truly understand how we work, the human brain is capable of so much.
Bless you guys :}
I like it, simple idea, it would not work exactly like ears but I think it may recreate about 70% of sounds' feelings

Wow this is really amazing to think this is achievable with something as simple as computer processed vibration make me wonder what we can do with something like brainwave ? yeah maybe in future those vr devices in anime "sword art online" which can feed not only audio but also VISUAL signal to the brain via brain will really come true! both our brain and technology are amazing.
awesome
All of our senses are varying degrees of one sense, the sense of Touch. We perceive nothing unless something physically contacts our sensors. Yes even our eyes.
He was 5 when his parents found out that he was deaf
