On top of the sheer coolness factor Lugia has in every element of its design, it's also (perhaps unsurprisingly) a very spiritual pokemon. You look at Lugia and you get the same feeling of majesty and awe that you get looking at a blue whale. Shudo envisioned Lugia as a god and everything about it exemplifies that vision. There's something so endlessly mysterious, endlessly enchanting about Lugia and all of its lore that it's no surprise at all that it's captured the hearts of everyone who sees it.

Such a great as well as true comment. For me Lugia was just really mysterious, like Mew or Celebi, but since you could actually catch him in whirl islands he was even more fascinating, going deep through caves like articuno but only after getting his wing

There's also the fact that an npc in ecruteak that mentions Lugia caused storms of biblical proportions so this really does add to its spirituality probably oneof the reasons was so drawn to it to

People only look at lugia from competitive standpoint but I look at lugia for its lore.

Mewtwo and Lugia had best portrayals and storylines. Wished Rayquaza had gotten a good movie. After gen 3 they crashed.

I think I've only watched the Rayquaza/Deoxys movie once, from what I remember it's average at best. Honestly though, Rayquaza is probably the closest Pokémon I could think of to the level of popularity that Lugia has, it's design is amazing!

They could have easily had a full film based around Groudon and Kyogre awakening, with the only hope being to awaken Rayquaza or get it's attention.

Fantastic choice honestly!

Hi there, Just wanted to point out a few things that weren't said in the video but are really important to know about Lugia and makes it so unique in a lot of ways. Takeshi Shudo (the creator of the Pokemon) wanted Lugia (and the film) to be one the pieces of a scenario which would conclude with the rebellion of the Pokemon, he kinda wanted to make the anime and the games overall more mature and evolve in some ways. But it turned out nothing really went in his favor, and that's one of the things he ranted about in his blog like you said with Lugia being a representation of the Nature in a maternal firm. It was supposed to be called Pokemon X for a long time. He left the production of the anime later on and saw the use of Lugia and this broke his heart cuz he didn't want it to end like this and felt like his own child was robbed. Pokemon XD using Lugia as a figure was on the contrary just a coincidence even though it is still quite fitting I'll admit. There's so much more about all of this story around Takeshi but your video is still very informative. I'll just make a contradiction with your conclusion which states that Lugia was made to be for fans while it was not, on the contrary it was made by one man who tried to change everything for the better or the worse, but maybe that's what make the pokemon this appealing and particular. Great video overall, I'll definitely follow what you'll be doing, have a nice day :)

Hey dude, I really appreciate the comment! I actually really loved reading into this topic and found the tale of Shudo and Lugia very quite sad. Having now uploaded the video I do wish I had gone deeper in depth to show how much Shudo truly cared for his creation. I also really like the point of view you brought to this, my initial interpretation of Lugia was that he was made more as a hero Pokemon for people to look up to, however having looked deeper since the release of this video, it's actually a lot sadder. Lugia is definitely a fan favourite for a reason, but I do now believe that this was never Takeshi Shudo's intentions at all and that the over publicization of Lugia actually goes against his entire being all together. I absolutely love this deeper look into the Pokemon Universe as a whole. I appreciate the comment, its always nice to see things from a strangers perspective. :D

If you really feel the wish to go deeper, nothing prevents you from doing a video about Shudo in general since the part about Lugia is just one of many tragic events that happened to this man, this'll allow you to talk more about the few points you didn't bring up while explaining the story as a whole and something new. But yeah the topic is huge and the story around it is really sad. I'd just like to bring up a little mistake that I made and correct it. Lugia wasn't even supposed to be a Pokemon, just a God of all living creatures, the Mother of creation (that's where you get the issue with it being a male and not a female).

I think a darker story where Pokemon rebel against their owners would been too much for the time when most of the fanbase was made of kids. But now, 20 years later, the fanbase its compromised of mostly young adults who have been claiming for more mature stories on the games for a long time, so maybe the time is right to give them what they want.

Im 33 yrs of age, and Lugia is STILL my #1 favorite Pokémon to this day lol the Gen 2 Era in Pokémon was fucking AMAZING! SO MUCH mystery and hype at the time!! I remember when the very first gen 2 Pokémon started appearing in the States thru the Japanese version of the TCG!! Us kids being 10 and 11 yrs old had NO CLUE what the names of the brand new Pokémon were, or if they were even REAL to begin with lol The FIRST Pokémon movie confirmed a handful of them during the Pikachu Mini Movie at the beginning, and that blew our minds as kids too LOL But when Pokémon 2000 came out, along with Gold & Silver, it was like Pandoras box had been opened!! So much to explore and discover! I remember being in the 5th grade at the time and getting Silver version for my b-day and my step-brother getting Gold (Our b-days were 20 days apart in October). Still to this day that was probably my favorite b-day of my entire childhood growing up haha I'll never forget that year. I'll always Love Pokémon and have a soft spot for gen 2 and Lugia ❤️

Sadly Im a little too young to remember the release of Gen 2, so I never truly got to experience that crazy boom of new content and wonder. Strangely enough though, Gen 2 is now one of my favourite regions and games as a whole, so I think that wonder and effect it had on people still applies today! It must have been pretty surreal to have experienced all the crazy rumours and such pre internet where nothing was confirmed lol. The TCG and the first and second movies blew pokemon up into global stardom plus the anime is the reason why charizard is #1 after Pikachu in popularity till this day I'll never forget charizard vs Magmar and I thought zard died when he went into the Lava...good memories lol 😆 😅

Lugia is by far my favorite Pokémon and Pokémon 2000 was my favorite movie. I have always had a fascination with it since I first saw it. I love how it inspires awe and power but still chooses to spend it's time quietly at the bottom of the sea.

I’m 30 years old and no legendary pokémon since Lugia, Mewtwo and Kyogre has ever caught my eyes quite as much.

I remember when i was torn between whether Mewtwo or Lugia was my favorite Pokemon, 23 years ago. Now i can say it is Lugia

"The Charizards, The Suicunes, the Tyranitars even." I feel so called out. They're my top 3 favorite Pokemon lmao

Lugia's lackeys i.e. the Kanto bird trio got Regional Variants lately, so I think it'd be neat if Lugia got one down the line to correlate to those new forms.

Lugia is one of my top 3 favorite pokemon of all time. That being said, Ho-Oh really does deserve its own movie after that wild anime episode 1 appearance. Lugia and Celebi both got their own movies. Articuno, Zapdos and Moltres got good screentime thanks to Lugia. Mew and Mewtwo got a movie. At this point, a real movie about Ho-Oh, Raikou, Entei, and Suicune feels like a missed opportunity. It doesn't even have to involve Ash imo (in fact I'd like to see more Pokemon movies without him to open up storytelling avenues but that's not the point here), as long as we get a story that explains Tin Tower, Burned Tower, the relationship between Ho-Oh and Johto as a region, and utilizes Raikou/Entei/Suicune I'll be happy. ...A Lugia cameo would be pretty dope too 😊

My first Pokemon game was Silver. I had seen the anime, but never played the games. I saw it and an atomic purple Game Boy Color and a set of Double A batteries for sale at a store. And I begged my Dad for it. I'll admit it was my first top down game and I couldn't figure out that the welcome mats indicated you could leave the house. But eventually I figured it out and went and got my starter (you can probably figure out from my username which one I chose) I'll never forget Delcatty. Because I got stuck with Skitty as my main character in Explorers Of Time (gender wasn't restricted in that game) It's fun up until you realize Cute Charm and Normalize are terrible abilities for going up against Ghost types in dungeons. Also while I wouldn't say Lumineon is a favorite by any means, I like it's design better than some other fish. I'd take it over Luvdisc and Alomomola any day.

Didnt mewtwo also have its own shadow and the armored form? Still, lugia is awesome.

The only Pokémon that has received more attention then Lugia has to be Pikachu being the mascot. I can think of no other Pokemon that had it's own episode's. People might mention Mewtwo at the end of the indigo league but that was a blink and you'll miss it affair. Lugia has also appeared in other movies as well, it had a big bit in fighting Hoopa. What was disappointing is that the 3 birds got Galar forms but not Lugia. But thats fine, Lugia's great as is.

Ok, I have a theory of Mythical pokemon Most, if not all are made for the Anime Movies! Just look at Zarude, Zeraora, and heck! Even A pokemon like Jirachi or Mew could be considered with this

I ADORE Lugia! GREAT Pokemon, and the Second movie is a MASTERPIECE! But…I can’t lie…i do think i like Ho oh a BIT MORE. I never understood why it never got its own proper movie, it seemed like it was going to be a MUCH BIGGER deal when the cartoon started when i was a little girl…and that official battle theme they finally gave it in ‘HeartGold Version’, COME ON, WE ALL KNOW THAT SONG KICKS ASS! 😊
