Incredible film with incredible performances. Daniel Day-Lewis is, undeniably, one of the greatest actors who has ever lived. “My Left Foot”, “The Last of the Mohicans”, “In The Name Of The Father”, “Lincoln” - all of them showcasing his brilliance. His work often veers from the mainstream, but there is no one who more fully embodies every role they play. He retired from acting after “Phantom Thread”, because the intensity he put into each role became so draining on him. I hope there’s a chance he comes out of retirement some day to share his great talent again.

He is amazing-the way he can portray larger than life characters and make them seem so believable and sympathetic,in spite of their great flaws. His portrayal of Bill The Butcher in”Gangs of New York “is another stunning portrayal of a deeply flawed, charismatic yet narcissistic man.

"I'm finished." Fun Fact: Theatrical movie debut of Colleen Foy. Say What Fact: Russell Harvard, who plays the deaf, adult H.W. Plainview at the end of the film, is actually deaf. Voice Play Fact: Sir Daniel Day-Lewis based his voice for and characterization of Daniel Plainview in part on old recordings of the director, writer, and actor John Huston. An article by Christopher Goodwin in the Sunday Times (Of London) revealed Paul Thomas Anderson sent Day-Lewis documentaries about Huston while Day-Lewis was preparing to play the role. Historical Fact: The infamous "I drink your milk-shake!" is, in part, a real quote. Paul Thomas Anderson found the metaphor in congressional transcripts from the 1920s Teapot Dome scandal, in which Secretary of the Interior Albert Fall was convicted of accepting bribes for oil drilling rights to various lands. Anderson thinks it was Albert Fall, who was asked to describe drainage before Congress. Anderson embellished it and changed it around for Daniel Plainview's (Daniel Day-Lewis) rant. Casting Notes Fact: Dillon Freasier (who plays H.W. Plainview, the son of the character played by Sir Daniel Day-Lewis) was not an actor; he was an elementary student near the film's West Texas shooting location. Paul Thomas Anderson relayed a story that when the production was trying to convince Dillon's mother to allow Dillon to be in the movie, his mother wanted to figure out who Day-Lewis was, so she rented a copy of Gangs Of New York (2002). She panicked at the idea of her son spending time with the man she saw in that movie, so this movie's casting department rushed to her a copy of The Age Of Innocence (1993), in which Day-Lewis plays a civilized and gentle man.

One aspect of this film I especially appreciate is the musical score: so much of it feels odd, unexpected, and unnerving in a way that's hard to pin down. Eventually (with the joyful triumphant music at the very final shot) I decided that the music is specifically telling us what the inside of Daniel's head is feeling like. And he is a strange, shifty, calculating man constantly on the verge of losing his mind - so no wonder the music gives me the willies! :)

It's great to hear a reaction that's even-handed, thoughtful, and maybe most importantly of all, honest. I myself think Eli never had an actual faith or belief in the Lord to begin with, which was why he was so willing to renounce for the promise of money. However, I very much respect your thoughtful overall consideration of the characters in the light of the larger themes of the movie. I'm a subscriber now, and I imagine many more will follow for your even-handed, interesting, and entertaining reactions. Well done!

Great reaction! To my eye, Daniel and Eli are mirror images of each other - grifters out for their own glorification, just using different means to do so. And they both prove willing to cross any moral threshold to get what they want... By chance, have you read the book this is based on, "Oil" by Upton Sinclair? It's also fantastic. Although, to his credit, Daniel Day Lewis' performance turns merely an awful man into something truly terrifying. A tremendously talented actor.

This movie is what got me to pay serious attention to Paul Dano (Eli). I was already familiar with him from L.I.E., The Girl Next Door, The King, Fast Food Nation, Little Miss Sunshine and Taking Lives. Seeing him in such a serious drama with immensely talented cast and crew involved made me realize Dano was going places as a rising star. Sure enough, more hits followed: Prisoners, 12 Years a Slave, Knight and Day, The Batman and Love and Mercy. Got a Golden Globe nom for the last entry. Great takes as always, CNR.

I found it so interesting that you knew a story from the Bible that involved someone giving a blessing that they shouldn’t have given. I do think that Eli was very easy to despise, and yet I didn’t like the Daniel Day Lewis character, either…and that’s unusual, to like a movie in which I don’t relate to the main characters.

Thank you for your very thoughtful, insightful and really wonderful commentary on one of my favorite movies! For as much as this was based on 'Oil!' by Upton Sinclair, Paul Thomas Anderson really touched on greed, loneliness, false religion, etc....Plus he got Daniel Day Lewis and Paul Dano squaring off. Also, the score is by Jonny Greenwood who is a member of Radiohead (one of my favorite bands). Greenwood also scored Paul Thomas Anderson's "The Master" (one of my favorite PTA movies), "Inherent Vice", and "Phantom Thread" ("phantom thread" may be my favorite)

Upton Sinclair's book, btw, has almost nothing to do with Mr. Meanie: After the deaf son grows up and leaves, the story follows him, as he exposes the working conditions and need for unionizing early 20th-cty. oil workers. Although we certainly know which aspect of the book got director Anderson's attention, as well as whoever recommended this title.

@22:08 is the only time you see him cry or show any ounce of empathy and pain in the entire film aside from finding his brothers diary and realizing he truly is alone. You can tell that this was the hardest thing hes had to do, yet his greed and malice were more powerful than his underlying love for his son. Good example of how even when you know what you're doing is wrong and it hurts even yourself, greed can become such a strong force it over rides human logic and reason.

I know I am late to the party here. But I think part of made him even more missarable in the end comes from what he said to the guy that he claims "told him how to raise his family", his words to him about selling was something along the line "what will I do with myself?" At the end that is where he got to, what to do with himself now that he actually got there, and he had no answer, he was his work that was all he knew, and suddenly he got the succes but not the knowledge of what to do with it, as he was chasing succes not happiness. Most people want succes so that they then can turn that to something, wealth to live happy etc. But he just wanted succes to deny others and so in the end, not that I remember your words but something on the line of, age just makes you more of what you already are.

Still great but it didn’t quite capture the atmosphere of the film on the big screen. I've made an active effort not to watch it again since so i don't let the feelings from the theater be replaced. I always took it that Daniel was a sort-of Cain. Wandering in his early years, living like a vagabond and outcast, anger and resentment for everybody else, whether they have success or not. They all stand to take from him. So he responds as he does, either taking from them, feigning ignorance, providing things that fail or fall short due to his own greed, or just straight up killing those he's suspicious or jealous of in a fit of rage. Literally killing those who claimed to be his brother both times. Compared to Christ and his blood sacrifice, the only way a Cain knows how to absolve or resolve anything - even when legitimately wronged - is with drawing blood from others. There will be blood, and it won't be his own. So when there's the "I'm finished" in the end, it's the only facsimile the "natural man" or a Cain can produce or is capable of in relation to Christ's "It is finished." A poor self-serving substitute, just like his attempt at a relationship with H.W.

You’re appraisal afterward was correct. The first time I watched, I knew I was watching a great film but was so overwhelmed by everything, had to watch again…. and again…. and again…. I’m still torn about Daniel Plainview. I believe he’s a tragic hero, an abused child himself who was probably abandoned by his own father … his murder of the man who pretended to be his brother was justified by the rules of the old west, which assumes that a man who shows up riding another man’s horse probably murdered that man…. As well, his killing of ely I believe was (perhaps) to stop him from trying to approach HW and Mary for money…. Despite what he says, Daniel does love HW in his own way. Otherwise, why would he have been so instrumental in doing what he does for Mary? Also, I like to point out the very sly way that PT Anderson and Robert Elswett show the changes to Little Boston, which grows from a quiet prairie town to a bustling, busy place, just as Plainview said it would. And, Ely’s church did get built and grew enough that it enabled him to leave… I’m not saying Plainview is necessarily a ‘good’ man, but the world in which he’s shown to have lived in is harsh and unforgiving. He’s a survivor who would not be taken advantage of… a tough fellow who went off the rails….

At its core, this film is about the two most corrupting forces in the modern world: religion and capitalism. Daniel and Eli are both con men and human avatars of those systems. Both seek to dominate their environment and only one can come out on top. Capitalism wins in the end, but it's a hollow victory. Daniel will die miserable and alone. He's such an extreme embodiment of greed, sociopathy and sadism that he's incapable of connecting with other human beings. This fundamental deficiency at the heart of his character means he'll never be happy, nor even capable of understanding that he's missing out on everything that makes life worth living.

I was raised in the church and i'm still a christian and Eli got on my nerves SO much.. the "get out of here ghost" part was especially cringe for me. Eli was a self-righteous, hypocritical spiritual-charlatan; representing the worst aspects of corrupt religion. a wolf in sheep's clothing.. in a way Plainview was as well just in a different way, which is partly why he hated Eli so much. both ultimately were consumed by greed. imo Eli's crime was worse because his spiritual rot had the facade of godliness.. taking unsuspecting and gullible people along for the ride and posing as someone pious.

This movie struck me as people wanting to do a docudrama about the brutal origins of Big Oil, but the writers were frothing at the mouth too much and so created this absurd PoS. Yes, this movie is utter antihistorical pretentious nonsense, however it does stroke popular sentiment, throws in anti-religious BS out of left field, it has the flavor of the hour "Lewis" and so it is a darling of the snob film crowd.

I take it you haven't grown up, and lived through multiple oil booms and their subsequent busts? Talk about pretentious...pardon me if I am wrong, and congratulations on your mineral rights. P.S. I hope you have a better day than you already are having...anyone that shows up just to dump all over a random piece of art/film, must be in a terrible mood...

I hate the anti religion stuff but there are people who claim to be religious but really are fake. Also there are evil people who would do anything for power, wealth and money. Killers of a flower moon which is a true story is about that

Love the cinematography and the score. I forget who said it, but this movie actually feels like you are back in the early 20th century. So many movies that take place in the past, but you can tell its the 21st century and people are just wearing costumes.
