There Was Nothing That Says She Wanted to Be a Doctor | Application Renovation (S3 E20)

Ойын-сауық

This premed applied to 22 medical schools with a 3.99 GPA and 513 MCAT, but she only "got" 1 interview (AAMC VITA). She has great stats and a lot of shadowing, so what went wrong? Some of her biggest mistakes were deep in the personal statement.
If you find this video helpful, be sure to subscribe, hit that notification bell, and check out all our Meded Media podcasts at premedpodcasts.com.
As we look through this student's full AMCAS application, we discuss:
• Why negativity in your personal statement can be a turn-off for adcoms.
• Why "sales pitch" language hurts your med school application.
• The concern I have when I see a lot of tutoring and very little clinical experience on an application.
• Why you should not put shadowing in more than one activity spot.

What application renovation shows me is that reflection is a big part of the whole process. Your story needs time to be reflected on in order to explain your story and motivation. You have to be able to convey it to other people. Also, if you aren’t able to reflect on your own story and narrative, you can’t provide answers during the interview that can separate you from other candidates. You will at least be just like 50-100 other candidates coming in without something to make you different (which lies in your story). You don’t need to be able to cure cancer or build a world foundation to stand out. You could, but have the means to elaborate your motives, what this means for you and how you want to apply this moving forward. This process has opened my eyes to see my own story from another angle. Where I reflect on my own why. Most likely, you will find that there is a commonality or theme behind all the particular activities that you decided to take up. They speak to you vision and mission, and this is the story you need to provide.

I wouldn’t say the bar is in space, especially binge watching this YT channel. It seems like most people have a good shot of getting into med school if they can tell the story of themselves genuinely and how those experiences impacted others Also I think lots of people underestimate the personal statement Thank god i have another year to apply because if I applied this year, I would make soooooo many mistakes like a lot of the students shown on the channel make

It appears that this student has good experiences but needs more clinical experience and needs to really think about what being a doctor is about for her. Obviously her stats are great and her EC’s aren’t bad either (as long as she edits them to more story telling). The good news is that these are all easy fixes. She can definitely get into medical school next cycle if she makes the appropriate changes

Hi Dr. Grey. I am not sure if you read the comments section but I would love to understand your statement about the story of Henry. Many minority applicants (Black, Latinx, Indiginous LGBTQIA, or low socioeconomic status applicants have seen the pitfalls in healthcare of treating those particular demographics, and for some seeing those downfalls might be a motivating factor for them to become a patient advocate and representative face in healthcare. Could you talk about or show a video on how you would talk about those experiences without coming off as negative?

Right. Also people with chronic health conditions often get bounced from doctor to doctor within the system. I find many of these videos seem to present a takeaway: don't talk about medicine in a negative light. Don't we want future physicians to be acutely aware of the pitfalls of the system so that we change it? They clearly still want to be a physician as they apply...

imo, she needs to really find time to dip deep into her soul and do some introspecting, to see if being a dr is really what she desires. I feel like you need to feel it in your soul and bones. and when telling your story it has to flow like one. That's my opinion.

Dr. Ryan, I'm inspired by your work. I have a question. I'm planning on pre-writing everything I will be putting on my aamcas. I hope there was some kind of application simulator where you get to familiarize yourself with the application, but that's not the case. I plan on pre writing everything on a document and I'm wondering if the services you offer can take a final look at the prewrite before I put it on the application and submit it? That way I don't waste time and be more prepared for the application once it opens. Thanks so much for everything you do for us ❤️

Instead focus on building your GPA, making connections with supervisors and professors, studying well in intro courses so MCAT studying will go better, study for MCAT early, and start thinking of your stories. Having a template website will not help here as right now is the time to get involved with things you are passionate about. Don't think about checking the boxes but think about what you can do to get involved. That's what I would do.
