You take the time to go into great detail and stay entertaining. Thanks a lot. I'll surely be contributing. We just bought our first boat after more than a year of looking and learning (the good, the bad, the ugly). Every boat has a compromise. We ended up purchasing a 1977 C&C 36 with only 2 previous, and meticulous owners. A few chips and stress cracks (nothing structural) on the deck and that's about it. Interior is well maintained but shows her age in some areas (UV damage, scuffing, etc) nothing drastic. An amazing find is largely due to previous owners!!!. The Hull below the waterline is cored but completely dry (meticulous owners). We will learn a lot on this boat (all systems, sailing, maintenance, etc) over the next few years before we upgrade to substantially cruise.

Andy - Thanks for the videos - answered a lot of questions. I am "restoring" a 1974 Boston Whaler 13' Sport - it is in pretty good shape, but previous owners punched a bunch of small mounting holes and painted it several times, inside and out and glued carpeting to the no-slip deck. So I'm stripping and sanding the entire boat for refinishing. I would prefer to re-gelcoat the entire boat, mainly for durability but also for authenticity. Most marine forum discussions seem to prefer paint - your thoughts, please. I'd be happy to share photos of the entire project.

Dennis Fortna Paint. Gelcoating that size area is a LOT of work with little benefit. Paint can be touched up just as easily as gelcoat and you won't have to deal with color matching the gelcoat everytime you need to fix a chip or scratch :-)
@geoffstein38965 жыл бұрын
You are the man Andy! I have tried to do a small repair where I taped up around the area with masking tape, but when I sand it back I can see the fibreglass showing through like I've taken too much of the gelcoat back off and it hasn't blended into the surrounding area... Would you still treat a small area repair like you did in this video by sounding down the outside so it feathers the new into the old, if this makes sense? Thanks mate 👍

Thanks for the instruction, just what I was looking for. When blending gelcoat to the surrounding area, is there any prep going from the repair area to glossy undamaged gelcoat, there will evidently be some material beyond the 400 grit scratches. Does this buff off without a transition line?

If you can find a chip or scratch somewhere on the hull, look to see how thick the outer film is. Gelcoat is generally 1/16" or thicker; paint is paper thin. That's about the best way I know of :-)

I have a boat with a very rough surface due to a certain someone sanding down a surface that had a non slip additive. We are trying to fix the problem by doing layer upon layer of gel coats. It currently looks like a rusty surface that has been painted over. I noticed you mentioned PVA and I was wondering if adding PVA to the gelcoat mix would give me a thinker coat? Also do we need to sand between each application or just the final coat?

Doesn't the mek lighten the color matched gelcoat when its mixed in?

@VivaElMole3 жыл бұрын
Thank You for making this video is very informative, you are good, what is PVA? is a catalyst
@mattmcgahan
2 жыл бұрын
No it's not a catalyst. It seals the laminating resin surface from air so it will cure ie harden. If it is non laminating resin being used, it will have a wax added that rises to the surface to do the sealing job and PVA is not needed. It stands for 'polyvinyl acetate', so is basically the white wood glue you may have seen. This would be thicker than needed for sealing so dilute with water 50/50. You'll likely see it in hardware stores already diluted for sealing new plaster walls before painting or hanging wallpaper.

Do you ever do any repairs with other colours of gel coat? Building canoes we often use darker colours which seem to be a little more difficult in perfecting the final finish. It would also help your audience see a little more detail in the work you're doing as it is hard to see any of your sanding marks or gel coat application with the white. Great videos, keep up the good work!
@boatworkstoday
7 жыл бұрын
I do, but generally it's during the Summer and in the marina's (not in the shop). Most of the projects that I work on in the video's are customer jobs, and as I'm sure you know 90% of all the boats out there are a variation of white :-/ But if I ever have the chance to record a dark color, I certainly will!!
@bryangraves11995 жыл бұрын
When I wetsand after the repair, the old gelcoat turns orange before I can knock down the new gel to match the new surface. I’m left with a spot that looks like a color matched piece of gum was stuck on the spot with an orange circle around it. Any tips?
@saintgodard38548 жыл бұрын
When you were color matching the gel coat......you were laying out little swatch tests in a row across the area you wet sanded. How did you remove them once you achieved your color? Did you wipe them off with acetone? or did you let them dry and sand them off? Question 2...you used MEK as a catalyst in gel coat but used MEK-P as a sealer to cure laminate resin. are they 2 different products or are they both MEK-P?
@boatworkstoday
8 жыл бұрын
Yes, the color samples were all done over freshly sanded gelcoat so I could see the true, non-oxidized color of the gelcoat. Since none of these samples were catalyzed, I was able to wipe them off using acetone :-) The Mek-p is the catalyst for all poly based resins (whether gelcoat, or laminating resin used for fiberglass). The material used for sealing and curing the surface is PVA (Poly Vinyl Alcohol).. Hope this helps!

Wow Thankyou for the series. it helps me alot, need to patch up some damage on a Azimut 60 flybridge this is gonna help me alot especially with the color matching.
thanks for all the info, very informative... I feel like a could about anything on my boat..
Just what I needed to know. I have an old bass boat that has zero gel left on it. I was looking to apply new gel coat and didn't realize the non-wax was what I need to use. I am also looking to make a mold to reproduce a car dash surround and your glassing technique is valuable.
So glad I found this thank you
Exceptional videos. Many thanks.
Great just great. You saved me time and money.
Really awesome video...Thank you.
Thanks for this! I have a Scamp Fiberglass trailer... someone did a patch... I needed to clean up the work... Luckily I had the gelcoat from the factory. The reset of this tutorial has been awesome! Planning on getting it all done this weekend (weather permitting) ~J

Anon Ymous Good luck!
Great jot, and well done !!!
Nice work bud... new to the boating world and I will definitely need to put this info into practice! There are too many amateurs putting their vids up which does get me worried. Thanks again! :)
You do a great job of dumbing this area of expertise down for us newbies... I realize this must be difficult to explain to us your abilities and skill set in layman's terms. About like explaining or training new people how to do our jobs we do everyday without leaving out parts we don't have to think about any more since it's repetitious and ingrained into our routine. Thanks I learned alot and more feel confident tackling my project 1986 Glasstream runabout. Mine is dark grey or faded black with glitter... and white on the bottom. fixing the cosmetic issues seem easy enough except for color matching with glitter... Thanks again very informative.

I love all the little tips about how to keep from messing things up (which I am expert at) and creating more work. Very helpful stuff. I'm fixing some "fixes" on a Macski Kingfisher kayak before taking her out on the water so, thanks, and pray for me.

I wish you luck! You'll do just fine ;-)
Great video. Thank you for doing it. I have to admit, I'm still a little apprehensive about doing all this on my boat. Maybe I'll make a junk panel, break it, repair it & put a gel coat on it to see if I can handle this. You make it look easy, but I know you're a pro & I'm not.
Thank you
GREAT INFO!!
learnt heaps man. cheers from aus
great videos....when sanding down the original repair and going through fiberglass what grade mask should you wear?...thanks
you are awesome. thanks so much for your time. I'm just about to do a full restore on my hull. thanks mate. I have subscribed and will like your Facebook page.

I really enjoy the video 👌👍
I gotta say, I watched the first 2 episodes and decided this was not what I was looking for. BUT... you are so entertaining that I ended up watching the rest of the series. Your very good at this, and your detail is fantastic! Keep up the great videos!!!

Thanks again Andy, so informative and knowledge rich. I wanted to know if you Q&A series is still in operation (btwdockside)?
Great Video, at 64 I am still learning.
Great videos. Learned a lot. Thumbs up. Could you comment on how to do the gelcoat repairs working from under the boat. Many thanks.....
Awesome videos. I don't have a boat, but dream about having one all day, every day. So maybe this will be useful to me sometime. Anyway, keep up the great work! Subscribed
Great videos. Would have really liked to see the finished product looking from the side against the light
Hey, Just wanted to say Thanks for this video. Your suggestions for color matching techniques helped me nail my color in about 25 steps. Excellent!

Great information for when you accidentally or purposely shoot a hole in your boat.
I've watched a lot of your videos and still trying to figure out when I have to use a barrier coat? Would love more info on that.
Thanks for the instruction, just what I was looking for. When blending gelcoat to the surrounding area, is there any prep going from the repair area to glossy undamaged gelcoat, there will evidently be some material beyond the 400 grit scratches. Does this buff off without a transition line?
Awesome!!! How long does it take repair 10 inches hole?? Sometimes there is a mark around a perimeter of the rep... how can i avoid that??
Thanks very much Andy. I'm a newbie to fiberglass work and this was super helpful. Where is your 'donate now' button? I'd gladly pay something for all the time you must have spent making these videos. Keep up the good work!

I love the way you explain everything. There is a question. How can I know if my boat is painted with gel coat or regular paint. Thanks a lot I have learned a lot since I'm watching your channel.

If you can find a chip or scratch somewhere on the hull, look to see how thick the outer film is. Gelcoat is generally 1/16" or thicker; paint is paper thin. That's about the best way I know of :-)
This has been beyond helpful. Watched a good 5-6 videos before this and you make those people look like deluded drunks...
Are you using a pva because the gel coat was painted on raw ..ie with out a catalyst ? Is it ok just to add a catalyst to gel .. Looks easier your way ,, thanks Pip
Your good guy, just watched all you vids, very well done. this will help me fix the major barking on my boat after my trailer split. That buffing compound you used at the end looked like McGuire's,... was it?

I'd like to know, also.
i cut and polish gemstones for a side business...have you ever considered a polish called " "linda a"...it's a .5 micron aluminum oxide and will polish almost anything to a liquid finish.
Can you mix a very white gel coat with an off white gel coat to get something in between ?
Thank You for making this video is very informative, you are good, what is PVA? is a catalyst
@mattmcgahan

What's the name of the compound you use. I'm doing my rabbi's boat. Thanks
Take a picture of your sanding and blow the pic up on your ph. Amazing what it reveals.😊
Which meguiars product to finish? You said not a polish and not a wax, but didn't show which one. Finishing compound?
Great videos! With this, anyone can do fiberglass and gelcoat. What is the buffing compound in the blue bottle? Thanks!

+Josephine Bonaparte Thank you! I believe it was Meguiars Oxidation Remover (#49)..
your the best saving my ass at work hahah
Do you ever do any repairs with other colours of gel coat? Building canoes we often use darker colours which seem to be a little more difficult in perfecting the final finish. It would also help your audience see a little more detail in the work you're doing as it is hard to see any of your sanding marks or gel coat application with the white. Great videos, keep up the good work!

I do, but generally it's during the Summer and in the marina's (not in the shop). Most of the projects that I work on in the video's are customer jobs, and as I'm sure you know 90% of all the boats out there are a variation of white :-/ But if I ever have the chance to record a dark color, I certainly will!!
When I wetsand after the repair, the old gelcoat turns orange before I can knock down the new gel to match the new surface. I’m left with a spot that looks like a color matched piece of gum was stuck on the spot with an orange circle around it. Any tips?
When you were color matching the gel coat......you were laying out little swatch tests in a row across the area you wet sanded. How did you remove them once you achieved your color? Did you wipe them off with acetone? or did you let them dry and sand them off? Question 2...you used MEK as a catalyst in gel coat but used MEK-P as a sealer to cure laminate resin. are they 2 different products or are they both MEK-P?
@boatworkstoday
