There’s a Hidden Continent Lurking Beneath Europe

Ғылым және технология

How did we lose an entire continent? Scientists have spent nearly 10 years to figure out the history of the lost continent they’re calling Greater Adria.

So it turns out, Greater Adria is not truly gone...it’s lurking underneath southern Europe.
Roughly 240 million years ago, this Greenland-sized land mass was part of the Gondwana supercontinent, wedged in with its North African and European counterparts.
Then, 20 million years later, the continent decided to make a break for it and started separating from Africa, and in another 40 million years Greater Adria became a truly independent continent.
On its journey toward self discovery, floating about on the Earth’s surface thanks to continental drift, Greater Adria encountered what is now southern Europe.
Greater Adria shattered into pieces in response and was sucked under its opposing continental plate, where it got officially ‘"lost" in Earth’s syrupy mantle. But its top layer got scraped off and shoved up, instead of down, forming part of the Apennine mountains in central Italy.
Colliding plates are a messy and chaotic business, and these relics of a lost continent, mostly chunks of limestone, are sprinkled all over the Mediterranean meaning the continental remnants are spread out across borders.
Geoscience agencies tend to have developed their own logic and ways of talking about these kinds of geological processes, so piecing all of it together to form a whole picture was challenging in ways even beyond the science.
Find out more about Greater Adria’s journey to independence and how the continent came to be on this episode of Elements.

"The only visible remnants of the continent-known as Greater Adria-are limestones and other rocks found in the mountain ranges of southern Europe. Scientists believe these rocks started out as marine sediments and were later scraped off the landmass’s surface and lifted up through the collision of tectonic plates."

@@Toastmaster_5000 I understand where you're coming from, as I watched a series not too long ago that displayed how the first series was good. However, the plot line was complete and utter shit in the first series. After the lab, nothing made sense and it felt like they came up with an ending on the spot, and the ending had zero relevance to what it was building to. Brotherhood took the plot line from the (then finished) Manga and transformed it into what we were hoping we would see. The series I watched explained how 'everything was better', yet it was sort of a weird...misguided look at it from an 'outsider looking in' standpoint. Brotherhood skipped half the shit you already knew from the first series, and then retconned the portions that made absolutely no sense, and finally expanded on the plot for it to be relevant and tell the full story, instead of portions of a story that had zero relevance to '2 boys playing with fate'. Otherwise, i loved the pace of the first series, for sure. And I loved each episode, still even to this day. The plot line, to me, is what I consider to be the focal point of Brotherhood. And that's why it's extraordinarily better than the original.

@@itsJoshW I didn't find the 2003 plot hard to follow even after the lab. The ending wasn't especially satisfying, but I understood it. To me, Brotherhood's plot difference was easier to follow is because it was so incredibly boring and cliche. It was basically "Hohenheim wants god-level power and knowledge" where the homunculi were pretty much just expendable henchmen and had no real backstory. I felt no interest or sympathy for any of the antagonists. In the 2003 series, the difference in plot could be described as "the homunculi were failed human transmutations. They know they're abominations of their former selves. So, they seek the sorcerer's stone because they want to fix what their creators couldn't. Being immortal, they can't end their own suffering". They're not evil just for the sake of being evil; they have a legit and compelling reason for their crimes, and each of them contributes toward the plot. To me, the part where the 2003 series loses people is once they start getting into the gate that leads into "our world". That wasn't such a bad concept, but it was executed poorly.

You didn't watch Brotherhood. "Hohenheim wants god-level power and knowledge" tells me this. "homunculi were pretty much just expendable henchmen and had no real backstory.", also tells me you didn't watch this. They explain directly what each one was created for in this series. Literally the 'seven sins of humanity', and it's evident lol. " I felt no interest or sympathy for any of the antagonists." They were the same antagonists, the difference is they didn't fabricate a dante or half the random people to create a 'city under the city' for dante to 'want god power', or some weird shit that, once more, had zero relevance to the original plot line. They didn't even get the Philosopher's stone plotline correct in the original. This felt like it was sort of 'useless' from the very start. Something of which they resolved in Brotherhood, since they did bring in 'it takes people to create it' and then wondering 'why' is sort of important. They didn't even give you a 'why', just simple a 'okay cool its now here because x useless reason'. That useless reason is prisoners lol...like, what. No one ever questioned "So why would they want a philosophers stone in the first place"; Not to the brothers, but to the researchers. "the homunculi were failed human transmutations" Yes, this is exactly what was WRONG with the 2003 version. Why were they failed? They basically dictate that they were 'once Human'; But they weren't lol. They were portions of Man that were pushed into beings. A good explanation as to 'why this makes no sense' is Gluttony. "Failed human transmutation" turns into a guy with a giant eye and mouth in his stomach that eats everything. Okay...... *meme here* "So, they seek the sorcerer's stone"; Philosophers stone*; This isn't Harry Potter. "Being immortal, they can't end their own suffering" simply: This is not so much a plot line, more so a backstory for something that was very off-beat from the original content that it's sickening. "To me, the part where the 2003 series loses people is once they start getting into the gate that leads into "our world"" This actually isn't just it. The majority of people I know that DO watch anime, and those who aren't specifically weebs but are also just general people who enjoy Anime, hated the original because everything after the Lab was pretty much useless. From Hues death being part of some elaborate scheme and turned into 'oh we want to be Human and i want to be a powerful lover', all the way to the world gates being a thing. The only benefit of the first iteration is and will ALWAYS be the side stories that had character development. The issue with this, however, is that the character development only mattered for Edward, Al and the main character cast, which did not include the villains or homunculi. When including these, you note that not only is it not taking from the source material (the manga), it creates a story that ISN'T about the topic of alchemy. It's directly about the topic of 'Humanity'. One could argue 'it's such a better topic', but it isn't...because the show literally opens talking about the LAWS of ALCHEMY, not about the deep understanding of Human connection and love, along with the mistakes people do to push their life into the sort of directions it takes. This isn't a 'slice of life' manga/anime lol. I'm going to sum up both: I’m going to disregard everything up to where the ‘lab’ incident in the first series, because it’s the exact same…just spanning a few episodes instead of 27. The major differences are the plot line and Scar. Brotherhood after lab: They find out the lab was a research facility utilized to create the philosophers stone. This was originally done by the death of inmates for the war that had happened verse the ishvalans. Meanwhile scar is an ishvalans who had survived from this war; His brother had been killed at the hands of a State Alchemist, and his brother had also attempted an ancient form of alchemy, which is why Scar is capable of destroying (paraphrasing, there’s more into this story). Multiple state alchemists in this war obtained these stones, however this wasn’t fhe first time the stone was created. Later the plot reveals that a transmutation circle was built under the city and was going to be used to destroy half of Central City (and more, if I recall) for the further advancement of the later plot. The original Homunculi were chosen from test subjects to ‘serve’ under the ruler, in particular was meant to be the ‘fuhrer’. These were segments of the creator in ‘the flask’ (if I recall), which was the ‘first’/ original homunculi. He creates the other homunculi after obtaining his Human form. The Human Form of the ‘first’ homunculi, or ‘creature in the flask’ started hundreds of years back, where he was ‘found’ and captured in a flask and begged a slave to let him free. The slave became a disciple to the king, and turned on the king and practice ‘alchemy’ without the king knowing (with the creature in the flask). Eventually, the creature convinced the slave, he dubbed Hohenheim, to do a spell that’ll bring immortality to the king. Instead, it killed the king and all the ones in the land in exchange for immortality, which the creature also obtained half a form of a Human - which was the form of Hohenheim. Thus, two hohenheim’s. One with the powers you see that can control Alchemy, the other with rudimentary knowledge of the powers. Hohenheim stayed low and only slightly helped, but wasn’t a true master of his powers, whereas the ‘dark’ version pulled strings and ended up slowly ruling the region. The Homunculi were, in essence, the ‘human’ parts of the dark hohenheim, transformed from creatures around the land; ALONG with a gate to a void, similar to the gate of truth (This would be Gluttony). The purpose was to keep the ‘dark’ hohenheim (also known as “Father”) not Human and to keep his ‘homunculi’ presence in tacked. Main plot line and goal: For the ‘first homunculi’ (Father) to obtain God of the Universe and ‘gate keeper’, not just of that world. Ed and Al’s goal: Originally to get their limbs and body back, which transformed into a character building of understanding that their actual father was what created alchemy, and that the laws can be broken if they understand how to break them properly. In exchange for the power of alchemy, Edward was capable of getting back his arm, leg and his brothers body. Original timeline: Hohenheim fucked a chick who was supposed to be obtaining God power with him. He left her and had 2 boys, she was outraged and she took it on everyone else. (Dante). Ed/Al found out about the philosophers stone, and how it took Human lives to achieve. They refused to do it, however then were forced in hand. Eventually Al ended up becoming the Philosophers stone due to Scar, who transferred it to Al from Kimblee…who you barely know ‘why’ because they plot was thin lol. Eventually they find out it was Dante pulling strings ‘all along’ and they confront dante. Stuff happens, and then an underground city exists and occurs, where it results in Edward going to a new world. More stuff happens, and then the series ends. Little reasoning after this, which is what really left the plot ‘empty’. The reason: They didn’t know where the manga was going and the writers didn’t talk to the manga team, which resulted in this fragmented plot that had zero relevance. The fight scenes were great in the original, don’t get me wrong. I think a few portions were great. It’s evident that they had no clue ‘why’ things were happening, so they made up things as they went. They didn’t formulate out why. And again, paraphrasing because I can barely remember the series, but I can recall more of brotherhood just due to the sheer amount of plotline you’re given, verses ‘well just because’. Ultimately, Brotherhood had a plot line...one that was about the series, and not-so about 'weird character development' toward the end. The one true thing I disliked about the original was the ending, which didn't resolve. The one thing I did like, however, was the movie...but even that -- sucked. The original was good when it released in 2003, assuming you weren't a fan of the manga. When Brotherhood came out, it made the original complete shit...and reading the manga only validates that claim.

There are multiple continents inside our planet, along with multiple deep-planet oceans. It's not just one. I'm not sure why you wouldn't bother to mention that, unless this came from a single wiki click and just, "Oh! Wow! A continent under the surface! I don't need to research this any further!"
