Fun fact: Morrissey once filled out a questionnaire prior to an interview: "Where and when were you happiest?" He answered: May 21, 1959. .......... That's the day before he was born.

In my modest opinion, Andy is among the best bass players of all time and I explain why: he proved the bass can be leading melodic line in a terrific great song creating his mark on it, till a point the song doesn’t sound the same without it. Also, he used different tunings on his bass and played a lot of lines with slaps and palm hand mutings all the time with both the pick and also the fingers. Morrissey and Johnny were really lucky to have him on the band.

I totally agree. And I would add that he was lucky to have Marr and his genius guitar playing, giving him room for that bass, the 2 working and playing of each other. Think of This Night Has Openned My Eyes. Astonishing dance of guitar and bass. And awesome song.

Most People don't get that Morrissey has penned some subtle morbid lyrics, that can be amusing and funny at the same time. If you laugh, or just smile at some of those lyrics, then you are among the few that get it. I feel Morrissey became even more skilled at using the best word choices to convey a message after the Smiths ended, and he went on to his next Band bearing his name. His sound changed post Smiths, but it's still lovely with relatable lyrics. .... Someone asked in a Smiths Fanzine 4-5 years after the Smiths breakup, if anyone could suggest a band with a Smiths sound/style, with some relationship difficulty/failure lyrics, and the suggestion was: The Sundays Album: "Reading, Writing, And Arithmetic." They sound like the Smiths but with a Female vocalist.

There's a quote from Stone Roses frontman Ian Brown about why they didn't crack America where he says: "America doesn't deserve us yet." Maybe this was true of The Smiths too? I'm a British-post-Smiths-break-up stereotype; came across them in your teens and having that moment of clarity of having a band that speaks to me. To this day, they're still this 38-year-olds favourite band. You're gonna get hit with so many recommendations; especially when it comes to the better-known singles, etc. and rightfully so! They are the most popular/liked for a reason. But if you want a couple of "different" or 'uncommon" recommendations, generally speaking, 'Cemetry Gates' is a vastly underappreciated song. You might also appreciate 'Ask' or if you like the bass, then maybe 'Barbarism Doesn't Begin at Home' But you're going to get so many recommendations and you're sucked in now; so it's just a case of when rather than if you get to them all.

I think that the depressing lyrics and bright music combo is part of the intended effect, but I also personally like the more consistently dark songs. But this was an obvious poll winner since its so well loved. I still think you're gonna like 'I know its over' better, it has more of that relatable longing for death thing Morrisey is so good at. Also if youre into this kind of vibe but want slightly heavier music, i'd check out The Cure, especially the early stuff. Surprisingly heavy for the time, and the Bass is very much at the top of the mix

In my point of view, this song is about a ghost. They died side by side crashed by some large and heavy vehicle. He couldn't even understood if it was a double decker bus or a ten tonne truck! He wants to see people "young and alive". He's "welcome no more" because he's dead, he's a ghost. The light that never goes out, is the love between the two souls. I could be wrong, but that's my interpretation.

A great song from a very clever band. There is a lot of dry humour in the lyrics. If you like bass driven tunes check out some more bands also from Manchester: Joy Division/New Order and The Fall. JD is angst ridden, totally brilliant both musically and lyrically, but not always an easy listen given their singer (Ian Curtis) killed himself aged 23. Morrissey tells a story of how he and Ian used to get the bus home together after punk gigs. JD later became New Order. The Fall are well unique. Enjoy.

I love how you're "all about that bass" ... especially because The Smiths are the ultimate "jingle-jangle" guitar band. In trio bands (which, in a sense, is true for The Smiths because Morrissey doesn't play an instrument), all three instruments (guitar/keys, bass, and drummer) have to really deliver, and there's no one to cover up for their deficiencies, if they have them. Mike Joyce is usually "serviceable" on the drums, but take a listen to "What She Said" (off Meat Is Murder) if you want to hear him really lay down a fast, busy pattern! You'll get a faceful of bass from that cut as well!
