There are More MMORPGs to Play in 2024

What MMORPG Should I play?
It's a question asked over and over and over again and it leads to lots of top 10 lists, many of which have the same games on it.
MMORPGs that get talked about A LOT, World of Warcraft, Elder Scrolls Online, Guild Wars 2, Final Fantasy XIV, Lord of the Rings Online, Runescape...etc.
But there are a lot more MMOs out there, and some of these might be worth playing. This introduces what I hope will be a continues series as I look at different MMOs that are "Not Top 10 MMOs" MMOs that may not only be worth playing, but could even become personal favorites of yours.
Here you'll find a mix of Indie MMOs, Early Access MMOs, Emulators, and Old Classics.

Tibia is an MMO that I rarely see people talk about, that I grew up playing. It came out about the same time as Ultima online, but still receives 2 large expansions a year. Its DEFINITELY old school. But man, the size of that game is actually daunting, now. There are only 4 classes you can pick from - Knight, Paladin, Druid and Sorcerer, which can be upgraded to Elite Knight, Royal Paladin, Elder Druid and Master Sorcerer by hitting level 20, going on a specific class quest and having a subscription. No level cap, in game housing, extremely intense hunting grounds, which can escalate rather quickly, so exploring can be extremely scary but fun! There is a PK system, but can be played on non-PvP servers if you have an aversion to PKs. They have an old school type questing system, that you have to talk to NPCs and pick out key words that they say in order to put clues together on what a quest needs to be completed, and they are usually VERY long and grindy quests, that feel like adventures (you used to have to type back to the NPCs, but now you can click on highlighted key words if you want to talk about the subject the bring up). I remember a door which was locked, requiring level 999 that was found deep in a very high level/hard hunting ground that people thought was impossible to attain, back in the day. I know people are over level 1,000 now and I'm sure theyve discovered the mysteries of whats behind that door, but I'm keeping it a mystery for myself xD. Combat, without paying for a subscription, can be a little boring as you have very few abilities. You can still use runes, which are a ammo type system with limited charges. But at a higher level and paid service, you have quite an extensive list of abilities and spells. And on top of losing XP and ability XP when you die, it can be a bit punishing on death. Which always makes exploring intense and exciting! Its a great game that is not very popular in North America, but I still think is an amazing time, if you're into a pretty hardcore play experience that in no way holds your hand and can be punishing.

The problem with EverQuest is the amount of people boxing/botting playing multiple characters, it really strips away the community feel of the game. EverQuest is at its peak when all 6 members in a group are real players, such an amazing experience.

the porblem with that is it will not be achieved like the early days unless they add a dungeon finder to the game to promote it. i see so many people who sit around barely doing anything and spam LFG with certain specifications that rarely are met. this causes others to play more characters so they can do exactly what they want to do because the randoms who are LFG dont want to do that. it worked especially well in FF14 where veteran players get a daily dungeon mission to queue up and help new players get through the intro dungeons. until then i will stick with my own group.

Rift and ArcheAge were two games that were absolutely amazing for a for short time, but it's totally valid that they are not on this list, because neither of them is very fun in the current state, you kinda 'had to be there' to appreciate what was good about them. AA just announced that it's about to shut down, so definitely not worth getting into unless you wanna have a little tourist experience of it before it shuts down. But even still, the stuff that made it great are things you probably can't experience in the next month before it shuts down, like it's housing system, which was BY FAR my favorite housing system of any MMO. They did do a fresh start server a few years ago and I did convince some friends to hop in and try it with me, they all enjoyed it, at least for a while until you hit the later game progression which is pretty heavily monitized. Rift on the other hand, i believe it's still going, it just isn't fun like it was in it's first year. They have done fresh start servers a few times i think, but the last time i tried one, it had none of the heart and soul of the original launch year. I think the biggest part of that for me is that OG Rift had possibly one of my favorite class systems and combat with those build possibilities, at least for a classic tab target combat style. But over time they nerfed all the fun out of most of those builds, and the fresh start servers don't revert to a previous version of the game, it's just the modern game and balance, but with expansions content locked initially and unlocking over time. EverQuest TLP's are the same way, but i don't mind a lot of the QoL and balance changes that EQ has done over time, where as Rifts changes killed the OG fun. Some of the most fun i've ever had in an MMO was when i was healing dungeon runs as an Inquisicar DPS/Healing build... i get why it was OP and prolly needed a nerf... but sometimes OP stuff is fun while you can enjoy it.

oh yes and since you're mentioning healing specs, OP ones at that, I gotta drop in with my Frostkeeper that could tank like 10 people no problem plus the damage from the Fang of Regulos :D good times. But my class of choice was rogue with Marksman being my fave though I did enjoy Assassin specs as well. Biggest issue is that ogreish company that shall not be named - they can pull the plug at any time so it's hard to justify being in-game for even 5 minutes with so many fantastic games out today even beyond the MMO realm.

I want to give an extended shout out to Final Fantasy XI, specifically the HorizonXI server. it's another classic MMO that is absolutely worth trying. The HorizonXI server makes installing and giving the game a more modern UI super easy. I even got it set up on my Steam Deck with minimal fuss. HorizonXI is a "classic" kind of server based on the level 75 era of the game. I think a lot of people who dig EQ1 specifically would find a lot to like about FFXI. It has the slower, more deliberate combat, more roles in a group than just tank/healer/dps, a very dangerous world, and an absolute necessity to group up that makes these kinds of older MMOs social. It has quests and a story that is there to discover if you want to, or you can ignore it completely - unlike FFXIV. The game definitely has some weird quirks and a bit of a learning curve just to get started, but the HorizonXI community is AMAZING and welcoming even to total newbies like me. Over the past month or so, I've learned so much about the game and it's been a super satisfying and rewarding experience.

Star Citizen's server meshing tested 750 player servers - that said as a long term backer I would recommend NOT playing it until server meshing is working and stable. This will show us IF Star Citizen can ever truly live up to it's lofty goals as well as fixing the majority of jank and desync issues which currently plague it. In a team, there is no experience like it, even now... but you have to have a certain masochistic bent to enjoy it in it's current state. edit: 100% agree, buy your ships in game - buying them for money is literally stealing the main progression loop from yourself.

@@Redbeardflynn 3.23 is a nice quality of life patch for those who already play, the UI improving as you mentioned with things like a new (and usable) starmap, a mini map, more intuitive way-finding, as well as server recovery, better apps on the mobi glass. All that plus a more new player friendly flight mechanic and starting hints and whenever player hangars and physical inventory hits means for sure this is a huge patch for us regulars. Of course new ships (Polaris), and more dynamic mission types will also help. AI seem to be better and more responsive than ever in both FPS and ship variants. There is a lot to like about the upcoming patch, but mainstream players should stay firmly away probably until official beta at least. If and when server meshing works this will quickly lead to Pyro, player built bases, crafting and fully AI driven economy, at that point we will know at last what kind of game we are getting. I’ve been around since 2013, so I can wait a while still, plus hopefully by then we can play Squadron 42 in all its Mark Hammilness and see if CIG can actually make a game… fingers crossed.🤞

City of heroes: homecoming is my fav at the moment. A very nice community, endless character creation (you can make billions of different costumes and there are gazillions of character powers to chose from). While the game isn't hard at all, all the possibilities lead to major altitis. Good that you are allowed 1000(!) characters per server. I used up about a hundred i think :)

Runes of Magic. Those were the days! This game was perhaps the buggiest I ever played. I used to fall beneath the world quite regularly, perticularly when I crossed a bridge. It was clearly a clone of wow. But it had an interesting lore behind it. It is now discontinued I believe. The other game I quite liked but quit as GW2 came out was AION. It still exists after a fashion but only in asia and only in korean language (I think), and you would not recognize it if you touched it again.

Mortal Online 2. So much more than PvP; and losing all your stuff is not really an issue because everyone knows it's going to happen to them and you adjust for it, and so does the game. I thought I'd never play PvP, but I tried it in the ESO Beta and got hooked for years. I own MO2; the only reason I don't play it is because you can have only a fraction of the profession and action skills on one character. The reason is supposedly to limit the number of master crafters, but there are so many other ways to do this while letting you level up and exerience everything. E.g., New World (R.I.P.) did this well.

I think DDO and DnD 3.5 were just too divisive to gain mainstream popularity. The amount of complexity in building characters and potential pitfalls without having knowledge of the system is pretty daunting. That and not subscribing the much simpler holy trinity system that other mainstream games do. Throw in the slow leveling process of the DnD system compared to other games and it feels bad. Add in the difficulty in making good balanced end game content with the DnD system and its probably not a surprise that game has struggled to hold a large playerbase. With that said, DDO was my first MMO and has some of my most memorable MMO experiences. It also taints my experience of some of the current MMOs dungeons as being very formulaic and boring.

@@Redbeardflynn well if you do, start hero side, as Villains and praetorian are not as populated. It's really easy to swap between each faction though. (Well yellow side if you start yellow you have to get past level 20 to visit other factions.) Also wait for a second or 3rd play to do the outbreak for start, Galaxy start is a simple tutorial, but the best way to do it is avoid the turtorial and just go into the LFG channel and ask for DFB (Death from below) it's a level 1 - 10 starter dungeon, good for learning how the game actually plays, and good for learning how to group in a game without a easy LFD. The irony being DFB was added to the attempt to make a LFD, only no one uses it like that.
