The bridge of this song always gets me. The "what you did was just as dark" is so impactful to me because it's like you had made peace with and accepted all your other traumas, but you never expected this one person to betray and destroy you like that. And what's worse is that person knew about all those other traumas and you confided in them how badly their betrayal would hurt and they still betrayed you anyways. I think this song portrays that so exceptionally.

i agree lol. me and one of my best friends had problems at the end of the year last year where i figured out she was lying to me abt stuff so i got mad at her but then talked to her at the last day of school and it just seemed like she didn’t care so it made me really sad lol so we didn’t talk all of summer until the end of summer when my grade went on a europe trip and i tried to talk to her again but once again she didn’t care but i was set on fixing our friendship so i was trying to act normal and when we went to france we visited the louvre and she was in my group and i gave my friend my phone bc she had to call someone who wasn’t there but then i forgot my friend had my phone and me and emma (the girl who kept betraying me) walked away then half way through i realized i didn’t have my phone and i found another one of my friends who would help me so we searched the louvre and at the end found the friend who had my phone but she said she gave it to emma then a few minutes later my friend i was with got a call from another one of my friends and she said that emma left the louvre with a group and my phone and we kept texting her to come back bc they literally left me here but she just kept saying it wasn’t her fault blah blah blah and then i got my phone at the end of the day. i then texted her a few days later after the europe trip and i was giving her an ultimatum and she just kept denying that she did anything wrong and stuff and she just wouldn’t apologize for anything and that was at the end of summer and a few days ago she came to visit my school (she moved schools) and i tried to talk to her bc i kinda missed her but she just kept saying that it was my fault and that she doesn’t trust me anymore and i know it wasn’t my fault but a small part of me is starting to believe it is. she’s done this to multiple other people when we were friends she would show me the texts and stuff.

I think this song explains depression to me. It’s Not as literal as infidelity but she describes those are the feelings I feel when I am defeated by my own mind.

"When they pulled me apart but what you did is just as had, just as dark" To me, I think he knew she had been bullied and/or heartbroken, possibly what other guys have done to her, he knew she had deep scars from it. And then he did the same, KNOWING how it had hurt her.

I've been binge-watching your videos, and let me tell you: seeing a therapist get so real with their own emotions is a refreshing thing to watch and empathize with. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your openness and your raw emotions, it's really inspiring

This song brought me back to when my ex left me over a text, with a simple ''We are done, i'm tired of the drama'' at 4am, me in bed thinking it was a weird dream and he was on his way to a club with his friends. He was 27 and i was 21, he was my first ''everything'' we dated almost a year and that text destroyed me, i was crying everyday, in traffic, at the bathroom in the gym, alone sitted on the dark in my room. It's been 4 years since it happend and i havent dated anyone ever since, he left with so much insecurities, lack of confidence and doubt, wondering if i'm worth it, if im good at love, if i deserve to be in a relatioship. He contacted me and we went out a couple of time in February of 2021 and we patched things out, but the scar he left is big. I loved this reaction Mere

This song really helps me to cry and i need to cry because i don't know why it's so hard for me to express my feelings and that somehow makes me feel exhausting. And this is my favorite part "You knew it still hurts underneath my scars. From when they pulled me apart. You knew the password, so I let you in the door" that really hit me hard. I love your interpretation! I personally think that the song is about the record label selling her masters and them pulling her apart is about 2016. So the betrayal hurt as much as when the whole world turned on her

I’m pretty sure I read it was about the record company selling her masters to the one person she explicitly asked them not to. When she realized they were not selling to her, she asked Big Machine to just respect her enough not to sell to Scooter Braun, and they lied to her face and said they wouldn’t. Turns out the deal was already practically set in stone. She considered Scott Borchetta a father figure and he broke her heart.

This song was such an important one for me. Someone I was with unexpectedly and traumatically ended our relationship after 4 years in 2020 and this song was the only one that fully captured my feelings about the situation. Taylor captures this feeling of betrayal and loss so expertly.

This song is so important to me, I was so in love with my ex but he was mentally and emotionally abusive but I stayed because I loved him even though I know it was all a lie. I dealt with all his abusive for the few moments of happiness, n he knew that that.

i relate to this in ways that aren’t obvious, instead of infidelity, i think about the betrayal i did to myself, about growing up and betraying the person i was, the person who was hopeful and full of light.. i am my own worst enemy and pain

The song like most on folklore has a double meaning. The main one is the betrayal she felt when her old manager sold her masters without her consent and then its layered with the breakdown of a fictional romantic relationship.

This is one of the songs I love on folklore. I deeply relate to this song. I feel this song so much, I cry every-time I listen to it because I feel like it is so cathartic as well.

This song breaks me in a lot of ways. Especially during this time of year (that's a whole story no one should be pestered with). But I listen it to evoke those feelings and try to process those feelings.

This has been part of my world since 2007. The betrayal left deep pain, bitterness, and anger. Ive tried everything that exists on Earth and Heaven to fix me, but the wounds wont heal. It's 2022 and what should have been the best years of my life are now gone. They were wasted stuck in this place... type of emotional purgatory. I've resigned myself to the probability that the pain wont leave until the day I leave this body. 🤷‍♀️

Trigger warning: my wife and I lost a pregnancy in a very late stage and so had to have a procedure for it. We then struggled to get pregnant again and weren’t sure if we would. It was a crushing time and I listened to this song in repeat because I interpreted this song as applying to a miscarriage or a loss of a child. I think TS was writing about the betrayal of her songs being taken from her, but the lyrics are applicable for a loss of a child.

You know this interpretation of this song is really really interesting and not at all something that had ever occured to me. I’ve always felt like this song was about accepting a love you didn’t understand and didn’t feel you deserved. Like, the rest of the world has wounded you so horribly and then this love comes along, and love is supposed to be good and nice, but its actually “just as hard, just as dark” to fall in love or to accept love when you don’t feel like you can trust in anything in the world. “Your faithless love is the only hoax i believe in” like, i still think this is fake but it’s all I have left, I don’t understand any of this but you’re still here and you’ve undone everything I thought I understood about how people or the world worked. “Don’t want no other shade of blue but you, no other shade of blue will do” - loving you, being loved by you, makes me sad and its hard but its also too important to let go. I think part of the reason I interpreted this as secretly a “happy” song is the key change towards the end, but also so much about personal experience colors interpretation of imagery like this.

To me this song is about the ultimate betrayal of relationships that you would never expect to cause you pain. Not a romantic relationship, but through a friendship. I think she got a lot of inspiration from Scott/Big Machine and Karlie Kloss. I don't know what happened to Karlie and Taylor but I know that it was likely significant. Friendship breakups can often be harder to go through than romantic relationships. It's almost like she's saying Karlie knew the trauma of what happened to Taylor with Kanye and Kim, but Karlie went and hurt her anyway even though Taylor trusted that she was one person she didn't have to worry about.

Folklore is so heavy with the freshness of her masters struggles and wasn’t long after the reputation debacle, and I feel a lot of both of those elements in this song with a huge dose of her feelings, depression, hopelessness, etc. weaving it together, along with her relationship struggles…JA was there through her trying to heal from those traumas but he probably was just over it at a certain point, just seeing him so unbothered about a lot of things pertaining to TS…idk that’s my interpretation 🤷🏼‍♀️

I definitely think this one is about the betrayal with her music like multiple other songs on this album and Evermore were about too. Idk for sure or what the New York reference is. And yes it felt so much like an infidelity trauma to her, it seems.

I relate to this song in such a way i cant even explain, the "this was just as hard as when they pulled me apart" Is so relatable to be growing up in a homophobic country and being gay. when people start to think you are gay they will pull you apart, that happened to me and only a year after i met a guy who well obvi wasnt the one seeing as hes the reason i relate too this song, every single line in the song just describes that whole situation in such a perfect way. (obv a shorter version since im not the type too trauma dump on people!)

I'm going through this experience right now and it is absolutely killing me. He and I have been friends off and on ever since high school he was a year younger than me in school and we became fast friends and stayed friends a long time and of course over the years people drift away you fade you know friendship but every so often we keep coming back together at the most random times completely random almost like a twin flame thing every time I think about him 11:11 pops up on the clock like there's so many twin flame signs its absolutely ridiculous and he's going through a divorce right now that's really messy and the first two weeks that we were hanging out he was sleeping over at my apartment because he felt safe there and I wanted to be there and after those first two weeks it started to be most days but not every day and then we started sleeping together like having sex and then everything is going great, then all of a sudden he just disappeared he just left me and now I just feel like all I want is him. Though part of the reason that I'm in pain right now all that I want right now if I can have my way be to climb into my bed with B iij&beside me and have him hold me a special way that he always did that only he did and just tell me everything is going to be okay just let me cry. And I've told him all this I told him so I'm feeling it's about changing anything says he doesn't hate me but it feels like it I think that he started feeling sooner than he thought he was going to and got scared and then basically threw me under the bus because I made him feel things but to hear him talk to me at the same time that he would use to talk about his ex-wife I almost died I almost died I was like I know that he's in pain all I've ever done is open my arms and my heart and my body and my home to him and it just doesn't matter all I want is him back. And I know that that's going to sound so stupid to so many people but when you've been abused for as long as the both of us have and then you find somebody who's good to you all you want to do is cling to them and then when he said that I acted like his ex-wife I thought I was going to die. And I still feel like I am make my heart is just shattered wish I knew how to fix this how to help him and how to show him that I'm not the horrible person he thinks I am. Any and all advice is welcome

I feel like this song is about Joe. He came along right after she had been pulled apart by all the Kanye and cancel stuff. I think maybe he cheated on her, and that pain felt the same. He had helped put her back together after it all fell apart, but then his betrayal brought back all that old pain.

Yes, Taylor talked with a Director about breakup friendships, and she said that his movie really touched her heart, I think she related herself with his movie

Scars, pulled her apart, the twisted knife. I feel like she’s being literal here and was in a surgery or someone she knew was and their person was betraying them as they were battling against their own personal illness. It happens too often and I think she put pen to paper and wrote that out. I definitely took that from my own experiences.
