From an article on internet: Describing the meaning behind the song in her iHeartRadio listening party for 'The Tortured Poets Department', Taylor said: "The metaphor in ‘Down Bad’ is that I was comparing sort of the idea of being love bombed. Where someone…rocks your world and dazzles you and then just kind of abandons you." She continued: "This girl is abducted by aliens but she wanted to stay with them…And then when they drop her back off in her hometown, she’s like, ‘Wait, no, where are you going? I liked it there! It was weird but it was cool. Come back!’" Taylor ended by saying: "And so…the girl in the character in the song felt like, ‘I’ve just been exposed to a whole different galaxy and universe and didn’t know it was possible, how could you just put me back where I was before?’"

That song was definitely about Joe Alwyn. He helped her and took her with him into his world out of the limelight and mostly England and introduced her to his life which she wasn’t accustomed to. She was in this glitz and glam life and Joe was a change and it‘s probably also a metaphor for him helping her escape her mindset, her depressed sad lonely mindset that she always was in but now that they broke up, it‘s gone and the security was gone. I think Joe was the love of her life but who knows.

When you’re listening to the album know that she’s finally found a guy who LOVES her. All of her. He’s not afraid of her fame. He’s the best at what he does like her. Even her bodyguards put down their guard when he’s with her. Travis would rip anyone apart that came after her. He couldn’t be more different than her other guys. He’s weird and goofy enough to match her but down to earth also. She’s HAPPY. Just remember that.

Matty was born 4/8/1989 so he’s an Aries which is a Fire Sign (same as Sagittarius which is Taylor). If you Google Aries, it says they have a “cosmic love”, hence the reference to being abducted by aliens and experiencing “cosmic love” then being left in a field all alone so abruptly but she longs for that cosmic love and doesn’t want to leave and be back to earth without him. When sing “waving at the ship”, she’s referring to the spaceship that Matty “abducted her on”.

I mean, I thought Midnights was a breakup album the first time I heard it. 😂 I think they were definitely having issues for years - which makes sense, given when we know she wrote You’re Losing Me. And she talks about ending the entire thing in one swift conversation. But I think there was still a lot of grief - I imagine she didn’t realize, when she yanked the whole sky down, that THAT was the end. And almost immediately, she’s love bombed with someone who appears to be offering everything she was just starting to come to grips with having lost. So she didn’t actually have to deal with the actual end of the long, thought it was forever, relationship, because she has this new perfect rings and babies and everything. Until that disappeared too. And now she has the anger of what Healy did to her, but she also now has to go back and actually process the grief of Joe, too. But now that’s tied to Healy and her manic decisions, not JUST the end of the six years, and it’s all together and that’s why the album is such a mishmash of “wait, who is this one about again?” 🤷🏼‍♀️

@@khills Completely agree with your take. Taylor is one of those people who tend to not be single for long (no judgement there, I am, too). She literally wrote about the „getaway car“ before that she needed to get out of a dying relationship. The problem with jumping out of a six year relationship into the next starry eyed lovey dovey stage was that there wasn’t much room to process. And when that relationship fell through, the grief would’ve been double. She also has added more and more fiction in recent years, so I don’t think deciphering every song for clues to her real life always makes sense. Btw I don’t think Folklore or Evermore were break-up albums, though Midnights had some pretty clear hints that she was ready to move on. Unfortunate. I was truly hoping she had found „The 1“. Maybe Travis is the lucky last? 🤞

This is a super heavy song and people who aren’t trained in recognizing toxic relationships or haven’t had the experience themselves would probably miss a lot of the metaphors. (I’ve seen younger ladies touting this one as something to be attained, which is super disturbing to me.) my favorite line is “They’ll say I’m nuts if I talk about the existence of you” it falls in well with the alien metaphor but also, doubles as meaning for those who’ve dealt with toxic or abusive situations. People are hesitant to believe when you try to explain your experience because either the person has a reputation for being charming/kind or they just think you’re crazy because “omg but they were so nice to you and did all those nice things. How could they be bad? You’re crazy”. It took me a few listens before that line really hit me.

  • @Sitting_on_a_perch

    @Sitting_on_a_perch

    Ай бұрын

Talking about “the existence of you” can also refer to how one feels after a breakup - I want to talk about it/ process it but I don’t think people want to hear about it - the nuances of a relationship, how confused one feels, I loved you and it’s over, it may have been bad at the end but there good times too. Keeping it to yourself bc people can look at you and judge you for missing someone/ something that was so obviously “wrong” for you, or the “jeez you’re still talking about that?” Breakups/ divorces can be extremely isolating, it’s a death/ loss but the other person is still walking around. Tough all around

  • @khills

Maybe, but it could also be people would think she was nuts for talking about him because by that point in time, he’d made a pretty bad name for himself. It could be along the lines of “you’re crazy, aliens don’t exist” and “you’re crazy, a good version of that person does not exist.”

I understand where you're coming from but I don't think that's entirely fair to judge others for singing to this w passion, Taylor doesn't regret. You live and you learn. Noone actually died. Love hurts, being alive hurts. Not everything's gonna work out. It's good to feel your feelings, it's cathartic. She's aware of how emotional she is and I see that as a good thing.

I found it so fascinating in the album, the difference between the joe songs and the matty songs. The joe songs, even back to "You're losing me ", was a slow painful death which she saw and felt it coming, and is its own kind of terrible grief. But the matty songs, like this, are this horrible in your face heartbreak. She is so brilliant with the song writing, and so brave and strong to do the eras tour with all this loss and heartbreak inside. "I can do it with a broken heart "made me cry.

If she is referencing Matt Healy in this song, she would have started seeing him after Joe. From my understanding, she was feeling ignored and starved for affection after Joe. She would have been going into a relationship with Matt ready for all the attention and love she could get. I think he would have known that and he chose to take advantage of her. I’ve had a similar experience, it sucks when reality sets in. I also completely agree when you said the time frame of a relationship doesn’t always decide its impact on you, no one gets to decide how meaningful something was for another person, regardless of time spent.

Once again with the upbeat catchy, dare I say “fun” feel of the song that is so trivial and sad. She is so good about making a cohesive album. Also, I want to throw out my theory that she makes one song based on multiple experiences that relate to the same topic, which may mean different relationships she’s had and not necessarily just one. It’s a thought I have that I feel is true and makes a lot of sense, as we know she draws from all her experiences. Love the reaction! Thank you! “Delicate” subject matter, as is all this album!! @@kerrisouth I'm sorry but your reply is a little confusing to me. "Many years of a lifeless relationship" is nowhere stated and Taylor spent years writing lovesongs about Joe, so... They were only together for 6 years, so where do your "MANY years" come from? I wonder if we've listened to the same album if you're really trying to say Matty Healy is a good guy? According to her songs he behaved like the most basic f-boy: wanting something that wasn't his ("Mr Steal your girl, then make her cry"), making promises he never intended to keep (all the marriage & kids references), ghosting... I mean, idk his side of the story. But if you respect the man more after listening to TTPD, it just confuses me because the man described on this album doesn't sound like someone I'd respect. Especially not after having had my fair share of f-boys before.

Thanks for pointing that out. I notice a lot of shades of different relationships in some of her songs (along with some fiction, I think). One thing too: I imagine after the rebound with Healy failed spectacularly, the heartache about her lost relationship with Joe would‘ve come back with a vengeance. Nobody gets over a six year relationship in a couple weeks, but you can put a Band-Aid on by jumping into a new relationship. So, the heartbreak from both failed relationships probably happened more or less together - which is bloody awful to even think about, much more to have to perform a massive tour through.

Her 'like I lost my twin' is about Matty and how he likes writing poetic song lyrics (like Taylor, so similar interests), and also how he's known to kinda 'mirror' the vibes of whom he's talking to (see him on chicken shop date to see an example of him doing this, he just 'yes ands' whatever the other party is going for). It's a technique to be 'charismatic', but can make the counterpart wonder after a while where the 'playful' personality that just vibes ends, and his 'real' personality begins. Also, her 'I'll built you a fort on some planet where they can all understand it' is a reference to his controversial quotes and how his defense of the quotes was that he was being 'artistic' and that people who take offense just don't understand him (a defense that personally drives me crazy and seems to mostly be used by a certain type of full-of-himself straight young white guy, imo)

@@priiifrg Taylor Swift makes autobiographical art that invites the listener to speculate. That is how many of her fans enjoy engaging with her, including me right now. I am indeed speculating! I think it helps listeners to emotionally engage with the art more, to 'world build' and therefore invest more. I understand your discomfort with that, the public discourse on private lives. I agree there can be big problems with that, like para social idealization, believing you have more intimacy with celebs than people in your own life, online bullying, etc. I guess it's up to every individual as to what level of speculation they deem to be 'cruel', and if you have different levels to which you feel comfortable than I, I respect that! Please do Peter I'm super intrigued to know what you think...I think it may be linked the Betty/August/James. It has references in it. It is clearly about a relationship falling apart and we know Betty forgives James but leaves the relationship in adulthood. Peter Pan is a big feature in the song, referenced in Cardigan. As well as suggestions that 'you were gonna grow up and come find me'- James excused his behavior with his age. The song also references how her life was never as easy as his. We can infer Betty isn't the most stable based on the song Betty and Cardigan. And could this be because Betty felt forced into forgiving James? Because everyone else had already forgiven him due to his gesture of showing up at a party?

As always, loved your take. My impression of TTPD is that this is sort of a stream of consciousness processing of her more unhealthy, petulant, vindictive, or victim mindset thoughts while she was processing a double heartbreak. So, I'm taking these songs as this is how she felt in a moment and the writing of the song is actually what got her to other side of it, in this case anger (eff you if I can't have us) vs how she starts, hurt, vulnerable and clearly still longing for him. Because she has a whole lotta bath!t crazy in these lyrics, but you can see that she isn't still in this now, that she is apparently very happy and wholly invested in her relationship with Travis, is clearly productive and being appropriately social, so my interpretation is this is voicing the extremes we all feel in immediate grief as she passes through, not her trying to actually prolong a bad relationship or really giving into the unhealthy codependent impulses she probably has. And this could be helpful IMO because I think people in general benefit when we recognize that just because we think or feel something doesn't make it right or valid or worth acting on, but it's ok to think and feel it anyway. Most people think stuff along these lines, but they're too ashamed to admit, and it's when you repress and ruminate a shameful thought that it's damaging. Feeling temporarily enraged or hopeless is just life, but as with most uncomfortable emotions, it's not culturally appropriate to discuss them and Taylor is blowing that out of the water.

She seems to be able to look back on her past relationships and see everything she went through from an observers perspective as well as remember the depths of her emotions and thoughts during those times as well. Her song “Memoir” is a perfect example of what I am trying to convey. I hope the very best for her in all aspects of her life.

Loved your reaction! I love how this song is in the key of B Major and this key at a high frequency (500hz) is said to help with dementia. Might not be an actual intention but if it is then it would definitely tie in with the theme of ‘forgetting’ what’s happened or being unsure what has happened.

I genuinely didn't realize I am still in a way, down bad, after being ghosted by someone when we were together for 8 months. Already had abandonment issues. It has been almost 5 years and I haven't been able to move on. It destroyed me. Not even the f'ing person. The ACTION of inaction was brutal.

I relate so hard to this song as a teenager. I’ve never had a romantic relationship but I am/was very sui/dal since high school started 3 years ago. This song is something I relate to so much because it makes me feel like I’m not alone and it’s truly resonant with me.

I interpreted the "like I lost my twin" more as if she lost her other half, or her mirror. She saw them as fated soulmates, and he was her missing piece because she felt like they had a connection. She also had a 10-year flirtation with this guy, so it seemed like her big comeback with the eras tour lining up with him "coming back for her" was meant to be.

Agree. Marry & Taylor have been attracted to each other for 10 years. But it was an impossible love. He was 'the bad guy', she was the sweet girl. But they found each other in their live for writing poetry and songs. He was the guy she always went to after a break-up. To have sex, to cuddle, to talk, ... They kept in touch all the time, communicating also through song lyrics of both of them. And then, after the break-up with Joe, Matty was probably the first one she went to. But this time their relation became public. After a couple of weeks, there must have happened something between them that ended their friendship forever.

"hostile takeover" She also calls him "steal your girl" in another song. Which I think goes back to the really long comment I left on your My Boy only Breaks... Video. I think he felt safe to flirt with a woman in a long-term, committed relationship, not realizing she was looking for a reason to leave. He talked her up, called her his Queen (she mentions being his queen at least twice in the album, so I feel it was significant), then bailed as soon as he realized she was taking his shit-talking (also her words) seriously.

Mere, I felt exactly like that four years ago when my best friend (female, not romantic) abandoned me. Cut ties, blocked me on everything. I was having a hard time with my depression and she too said I would be "better off alone". It literally broke me. I became suicidal, agoraphobic, had to go through so many treatments, like ECT... I am still very sore and confused. But is it weird to think of her and that situation in what's clearly a romantic song? Is there something wrong here? With me? -- just to make clear: I never had any romantic feelings for her, ever. I thought of her like my sister. And that's why it hurts so much when Taylor sings "like I lost my twin"...

THIS!!!! 100%. She’s an artist and a creator. We know she’s written many songs about fictional characters. We also know she loves sad songs. Not everything she writes is based 100% on her own personal reality or experience. Or maybe I just tell myself that because it’s too devastating otherwise. 💔

for those who’re going through a bad breakup like Taylor is referring in that song, i have some advice to add: think that now you don’t need to step on eggshells anymore just to be loved, and you can give yourself all the love, your precious love, that you wish they gave you and that you put on them. give yourself the unconditional love, the kindness, the acceptance. take yourself on dates, dress up for yourself, do activities that brings you joy, hit friends up and do a girls night. it might be very painful, and there’s nothing wrong in hurting, but the point of doing this is to make you realize that there’s life beyond this relationship. you deserve the best sweetheart, and your love is way too valuable for anyone to take advantage of 🤍
