One of the biggest parts of Anthony’s grief was that he had to immediately leap into the role of the Master of the entire family and estate. He had to make EVERY decision, including medical decisions for his pregnant and deeply grieving mother. He was never really allowed to get over his shock because he had to move on so quickly, so he is really afraid of loving anyone truly and having that pain if it didn’t work out, because it would unlock all his other pain.

I would love a Mended Light video about this, actually. The fact that part of Anthony’s trauma involved having to immediately step into his father’s shoes as family caretaker at such a young age and fall into a pattern of negating his wants and needs (which, in season 1, expresses as heated romantic encounters with women he can’t commit to but also wants to run away from his life with) .

I wish you had included the flashback clip of when Anthony was pushed into the role of head of the family immediately after the death of his father, the birthing scene, his mother's depression and his reaction to it all and then at the very end her apologising to him for everything that happened. He was allowed to be sad and vulnerable and grieve but she took the choice away and how that aversion to feelings stuck and trickled down to every choice of his life.

In the books Anthony's reaction when Kate is stung is even more intense. He tries to suck the venom out of her skin with his mouth and doesn't let her tell him no. His panic was so intense.

it was also the real reason they got married since the biggest gossips in the ton saw him sucking the venom. I would say that the scene where she gets stung is also the scene where she realises that he has feelings and fears and trauma like a human being, that he is a human being and not just this rake she has always thought him to be. And I think that is a very impkrtant moment in the series as she sees who he really is and not just what he shows to the society. She now saw all these in a way positive things about him.

Noooo.. Please watch more of the grief scenes. There is sooo much more to process. The way his mother shut down leaving Anthony to have to grow up overnight and swallow his own pain so that he can be there for his younger siblings. Having to be the man of the house and make big decisions while his mother (his primary caretaker) became emotionally unavailable to him despite it being a traumatic loss for him too. Anthony was meant to be 19 here. The layers of hurt run deeeeep.

While Bridgerton takes a lot of liberty with history and even the (amazing) costumes are quite fantastical, the acting, psychology, and depth of the characters is absolutely great. To me, it feels like a history inspired (not historically correct) fantasy with great drama, intrigue and conspiracy. We must not forget how incredibly racist, misogynist, and generally restricted (even for rich white men) the reality of those days were, while watching this empowering, beautiful fantasy drama. Very entertaining. I really loved watching you react to this, with your wise commentary.

Yeah totally - I saw a good video by The Take talking about how Bridgerton is really a story about today and that's kind of the point. "Fantasy drama" is a good term - it's using the distance of a period drama both for escapist entertainment and to make genuine commentary on the human character. One thing I love about the series is how the characters are restricted by social expectations but really, the choices they are making determine their fate. Anthony spends the whole series going "but Society expects this" while literally everyone in his life is going, "but wouldn't you rather marry someone you love, and whom you regard as an equal?"

I really like the fantasy drama, because as some poc have stated: 'It's nice to see poc and actors of colour take these roles.' Because yes, sometimes you want to play in a historical role and wear fun outfits. Same with Hamilton, which does show some as aspects of xenophobia while still ''ignoring'' the colour of skin.

I was hoping that you also talked about how violet grieved over her husband, from what I saw, she checked out for a long period time, leaving Anthony to handle matters, which is probably why, to the younger siblings he was a brother and a father figure. And it also influenced how Anthony viewed relationships and love. And it's also why Kate and Anthony bonded together because they were the ones that had to step up when their fathers died.

ALL the Bridgerton. EVERYTHING. This show is so packed with human experiences and relationships, and one really shockingly toxic happening in season one, that was kind of revolutionary for a love story when it was written back in the year 2000, but is super problematic just 20 years later. But almost every moment something is happening that would be comment worthy for a therapist.

That conversation between Anthony and his mom hits me every time I watch it. Last January my cat Hunter passed away very suddenly. I had him ever since he was 8 weeks old and I had him for 8 years, and for that entire time he was at my side as long as I was home. He was my best friend. When I lost him I was in the worst heartbreak I've ever experienced. I was still grieving when a few months later, Bridgerton aired that episode, and I broke down after I watched it. The way she described her grief for her husband summed up how I felt about losing my cat. I would choose the time I had with him every time, even if I had to go through that pain all over again, because love like that is worth it. I am grateful for every day that I had with him.

Great analysis. You make points that I had never considered despite binge-watching the season multiple times. I actually never thought that Kate's reason for hating Anthony (at least initially) was not being able to get Anthony for herself. I felt Kate really believed that Anthony was not a suitable match for her sister/in general as he considered marriage as a property transaction. I would love your analysis about the enemies to lover trope in general (Bridgerton S2) is a great example and also about long term psychological impact of when someone you genuinely care for(sibling/best friend) gets married/together with someone you want. Can people truly be happy for the couple or will there always be pent up anger? Does it hurt the self-esteem or sense of trust? Would Edwina have changed her mind so quickly if Kate wasn't in a near-death situation?

What an interesting video. I would like to see a reaction to the following (apologies if you have already done them): 1. The dynamic with the Sharma family, specifically for Kate and her relationship with her half sister and step mother after being parentified at 18. 2. The impact on Anthony at having taken on the title, and all of the families responsibilities at the age of 18 at the second his father died. 3. And something that spans a little in S1 and S2, Eloise's fear of childbirth and marriage (as discussed briefly in S1 with Daphne) as a result of the difficult birth of Hyacinth (as seen in S2). Noting that Eloise would have been about 8 or 9 at the time of Hyacinth's birth, the impact it had on her as she grew up.

For me, this was a moment of vulnerability. The veil of civility and mask that they both put up for the world was in an instant stripped away and they had a moment of true human connection. Literally hands on each heart, using the rhythm of the heartbeat to steady him and reassure him, for the first time they saw each other for who they truly were. And in that raw moment, they felt the strength of the attraction that had been brewing between them. They were close not just physically, the intimacy of the moment bonded them and lay bare a little what they had been denying to themselves all along.

If you watch the opening credits for Bridgerton, there is a constant “bee” motif of them flying among the “family tree,” and the reason for that being how the family was affected by one little insect. Can you analyze the scene of Anthony connecting with his younger brother? He’s the only dad that Gregory has ever known. It definitely relates to how Kate’s step-mom is the only mom she’s ever had. Both Anthony and Kate have experienced parental loss and having to become the “heads” of their family.

1:24 both I think. He probably didn’t know that he was allergic to bees, probably because this is early 1800s and medicine and medical knowledge was not great at the time. When you have an allergic reaction your throat/airways close up, and you suffocate to death. So his airways probably would’ve closed up regardless, but do to the fact that he got stung in the neck it happened almost immediately. If he got stung elsewhere, he may have at least had some time to say goodbye to his family.

IDK if you read comments two weeks after the fact, but I think it's important to note the overall context of the third clip: specifically that at the beginning of the season, Anthony specifically wanted to marry someone he *wasn't* in love with. He pursued Edwina particularly because she was the "perfect" debutante and someone he knew he would never love, because he did not want to go through what his mother went through when Edmund died, nor did he want his family to suffer if he died. ...and because Kate knew that (she overheard him saying something to that effect), she DIDN'T want Edwina to marry him because she knew it would be setting up her sister for an unhappy life. So...yeah, I'm glad you're going to watch it and hopefully comment on the depiction of grief more thoroughly? And/or the Sharma sisters' relationship? Particularly the depth of betrayal Edwina feels when she finds out how Kate and Anthony feel about each other.

8:12 reminded me of the film Dead Poets Society, in Mr Keating's philosophy of life but without the part of "I'm not saying if your life doesn't have that it isn't worth living, I'm saying that its what we seek" cause the whole point of the film was the misinterpretation from the boys, especially in Neil that his life wasn't worth living cause it lacked all great things like romance, passion and meaning. Just thought how your words tied into the film there, thought it was cool my brain was able to connect that.

He was convinced his dad was the best man that ever lived so Anthony would never surpass him, even in years which is why he didn't want to marry for love and let someone feel the grief his mother felt when her love died in her arms.

I loved that they expanded on Anthony's grief compared to the book, which already had a lot. What I really didn't like was that the removed the traumatic grief that Kate had and I think it took away quite a bit of that intimacy away in comparison to the book.

So... There are a couple of details that may help to better understand Anthony's story. First of all, if you go to the original source of the story, that is, the novels of Julia Quinn, you will notice that the first line with which the prologue opens is the following: "Anthony Bridgerton had always known he would die young." The character was convinced that it would not be possible for him to live longer than his father did. The second thing to know is that Julia Quinn's husband is a doctor, and she has always consulted him about any medical aspect that is presented in her novels. It is possible to develop an allergy to something that did not previously affect you, and if it is not treated immediately, a person can die as a result of the allergic reaction.

Goodness me. Yeah, back then people died frequently and like flies. From common colds to arsenic wallpaper and what not (I may not be getting the eras right.) Either way death was surely shocking but then again much more integrated into normal life. Now it's like processing deaths comes with even more trauma, as it's often hushed. That is, before the pandemic gave even the more safe places in the world a reminder. I find their reaction very on point. I'm totally the person who'd voice my displeasure with someone but if they have a panic attack, then I'll do my best to soothe them, too. I can go back to disliking them afterwards. No point at throwing dislike at a person who's out of it, anyway. 😝 The show looks quite intriguing. Just that none if that is really an option for me at the moment. So I'll just keep enjoying your reactions to it for the time being. :3 Also....... your team is a little bit daring to choose such a scene for you to react to, when it kind of hits this close to home. Are you OK?

You need to do a video addressing the relationship of Kate and Anthony and how it gets sticky with Kates sister Edwina being involved - specific scenes the race horse scene (episode 2), the hearts and flowers ball with a dance between Kate and Anthony (episode 4), and definitely the wedding scene (episode 6). Those 3 are a must in that order obviously, but any more to understand their relationship would be awesome!!!

Anaphylaxis is a terrifying thing. Bear in mind, Bridgerton is set well before allergies were fully understood. There are accounts of seasonal allergies, but anaphylaxis was not understood. You read 19th century medical accounts of someone eating something and then "dying of a fit", which probably meant the person had an unidentified food allergy and going into anaphylactic shock and dying.

This video is missing SO much of the story: Kate is the eldest child, who lost her father, is an outcast, and is devoted to protecting her younger sister (she feels responsible to make sure her sister does not become an outcast and marry well so she can be apart of society). Anthony gets thrust into the role of "man of the family" when his father dies and his mother goes through a long period of depression as the baby comes soon after (a source of Eloise's issues with marriage and family. In season one she talks with Daphne about her mother's screaming while giving birth after their father dies. How it haunts her. And knowing she went through depression after the baby and death of her husband. Eloise is definitely affected by it). It was a really traumatic time for the entire Bridgerton family. Anthony is forced to push his feelings aside and become the man of the family (that is why in season one he copes with drink and the company of someone he knows he can't have. He doesn't actually have to be vulnerable or face emotions. Another reason why in season 2 he wants to settle on "The Diamond" as a wife instead of a love match.) Kate and Anthony are kindred spirits thrust into this role (parental) which they never asked for and tend to do badly because they are doing it all alone and closed off (emotionally). Their love story is them finally breaking free from these roles and doing something a bit selfish (finally doing what they want). Kate helps Anthony heal from the trauma of his father's sudden passing (especially when she falls off the horse and he almost loses her). Anthony really loved and admired his father so it was a real blow that closed him off from ever feeling deeply again. There is a beautiful scene of Anthony finally talking about their father with his youngest sibling who was born after the passing. It is such a beautiful moment. Kate and Anthony both make mistakes but they learn from them, face the consequences, and finally heal some stuff that really needed healing (sibling relationships and grieving). It is a bit like Encanto with Luisa and the Pressure song. How the eldest siblings have this pressure to be perfect and take care of the younger siblings, sometimes to the detriment of their own happiness (selfish desires). Another BRILLIANT show about siblings and grief (get your tissues because it wrecked me!) is FROM SCRATCH on Netflix with Zoe Saldana. It was so beautiful and heart wrenching!!!

The paradigm shifts I enjoy seeing between them in the bee scene are pretty layered. They start out with the usual dynamic of Anthony in denial about why he avoided proposing to her sister and playing the cool-headed stoic, while Kate is in denial about her attraction and playing the reproachful guardian of both her sister's and her hearts. Kate rebukes Anthony for being reckless with others' feelings for what she assumes to be his interest in crossing boundaries, seizing control, getting a rise out of others - as she and Anthony have been locked in competition up to now. Anthony cannot clear his name because he's in denial about his real motivations. Enter THE BEE. Anthony is genuinely afraid, Kate seems to think it another game and looks at him like he's sunk to a new low. Kate then registers Anthony's fear, forcing her to see more humane motivations in him; he was afraid of the bee, he is concerned for her safety, and his worry turned to panic. Kate is skilled with horses, so even though Anthony isn't able to communicate the cause of his panic, Kate recognizes the situation and knows what to do. Even if Kate still thinks he's a Gaston-type, she seeks to soothe his panic, and he surprises her again by allowing her to lead his breathing. It is an act of courage, humility, and trust to show vulnerability and accept help. These are traits Kate hasn't seen in Anthony before and they run counter to the insults she was hurling moments earlier, and these traits align with her inscrutable attraction to him. So it seems believable to me that she would shift from disgust to appreciation and interest, at least temporarily. Likewise, Anthony has not seen these traits of selfless support and empathy from Kate, and they ground her fiery guardianship in a place of good intentions and integrity that align with his attraction for her. Anthony has also never allowed anyone to help him with anything, to see him in a vulnerable state, since his father's death - because he has been under such pressure to always take the lead, to do for others, to never let the children see him falter because he wanted them to feel safe. In this moment, he finds rest, support, unconditional acceptance, and relief with Kate. I mean, the guy was doomed to fall in love. xD Of course, they both need more evidence to know and understand each other, and more time to get out of denial before they can meet each other on the same page and allow their romance to begin. Good stuff.
