I've also been a shield my whole life, but completely lost myself a couple of years ago because, before therapy, nobody told me I could say no to things or put myself first. Even when I started trying it first, people would act disappointed or like they wouldn't be okay without my help. Setting boundaries is so challenging when so many people rely on you because it feels selfish, and because it can change relationships with people who were shielded by you to something that they aren't necessarily comfortable with. But I'm hoping with these adjustments I've been working on, I will find ways to fill my cup again, and build up my shield so I can be there for others like I used to.

@@emh3389 the guilt when you first start setting boundaries is so hard! What I learned that helped me, is that when people react badly to a boundary, it reinforces the need for that boundary. Relationships are supposed to be reciprocal. The ones that drop off are the ones who were only taking, never giving. It's good when they drop off. It makes room for people to come in who will match your energy

The other frustrating thing about how having a new baby was depicted is that Rosalie or Jacob were always on stand by to care for the baby, and Bella and Edward could run around whenever they saw fit. I think it frustrates me because sometimes young parents who need babysitters assume that another person, who happens to be free, is also readily available. Free time does not equal availability.

The only reason that Irina and her sisters were spared was because none of them had any idea about their mom’s immortal child. Simply knowing about one and not immediately reporting it was a death sentence with the Voltori. If she didn’t report the Cullens then her entire family would be threatened by it because they are “cousins.” The voltori wanted proof that Bella was turned so they were going to cross paths within the year and there was a strong likelihood that renessme would be discovered. She would not be able to hide knowing about the child from Aro who would be able to hear all of her thoughts or possibly be tortured for information by Jane. In her eyes the Cullens already sentenced themselves to death but it was a matter of saving her family in Alaska from their fate by being the ones to turn the Cullens in or almost certainly dying with them. It also takes her a few days of internal battle before she finally makes up her mind to turn them in. It’s also why she’s so quick to defend them at the end and accept death for her mistake so the rest of her family may survive. Also Benjamin’s maker being terrified of him being discovered partially has to do with survival because one of the cousins of the Cullens mentions how when Aro discovers someone with an ability he wants soon after the clan is guilty of a crime and the gifted individual is pardoned and “offered” a position while the rest of the clan is executed.

The more I discover the lore of twilight, the more I wish Stephanie Meyer would write different stories about the volturi and the other characters and just Edward and Bella to their happily ever after. Instead of twilight from Edward's eyes, let us see Twilight from the eyes of the Volturi or the other vamps, or better still, just more stories in the extended universe.

Physically I see that she became better looking, for example she rocked her new closet, she looked like a badass. Mentally, she also became a badass. So Amun created Benjamin especially to be a force against the Volturi. Something that is not in the books/movie, but that was explained in the guide, is that Amun also created Demetri (the one fighting Edward at the end), the tracker of the Volturi. Amun lost Demetri to the Volturi because of Chealsea, a vampire who can affect your relationships and loyalty. This is why Amun was so against Benjamin being out because he already lost his way of getting revenge on the Volturi for the decimation on his clan once.

One thing I love about the way the story ends is that in becoming a vampire, Bella becomes more confident and empowered which changes the dynamic of her relationship with Edward. It becomes more of a partnership although she starts hiding things to protect him. It's still less toxic. I think that happens in the real world as well. If a person is in therapy or just starting to realize their worth and what they deserve. It can end an existing relationship or make it stronger. I love that Christina Perry song! And thanks for reminding me of that ending when Bella shares her thoughts with Edward, it was perfect. Also have you read Midnight Sun? I enjoyed it.

I can understand why the Cullens gathered a bunch of people to meet with the Volturi. Long explanation below, if you care to read. Alice warned her family that the Volturi heads were coming personally, with a huge entourage, to “talk.” They all know they’re not actually coming to talk and give the Cullens a chance to explain. The Volturi (particularly Aro) are using this opportunity as an excuse to try to get Edward and Alice to join them, and kill most of the Cullens. Aro has always coveted Edward’s and Alice’s powers hoping to use them as an extension of his own; if he’s constantly in contact with their hands, he has access to thoughts of the present and events of the future rather than just the past. He hopes, once all the other Cullens are dead and Edward and Alice have “no reason” to stay in Forks, he can convince those two to join the Volturi as penance rather than be killed with the rest of them. Or he’s hopeful he can convince the two to join him if he only kills the maker of the immortal child and promises to spare the rest of their family in exchange. So…make no mistake, they were definitely coming to kill, and try to take Edward and Alice. NOT talk. HOWEVER, the Cullens knew assembling as many witnesses as they could would work as a fake-out. The Volturi said they are coming to talk and they hear the Cullens say the people around them are “witnesses” (which they are), but the Volturi interpret this as a lie just like theirs and see those witnesses as an army of decent size. This makes the Volturi wary of fighting outright because they may lose many of their forces even if they win; it’s even more true if you take the movie interpretation of Aro seeing Alice’s vision of what the Volturi lose if they continue to engage. In summary, it is only because the Cullens gathered so many witnesses to meet with the Volturi that the Volturi actually listen and give the Cullens a chance to explain. They wouldn’t have listened otherwise. The Cullens sending one of their family to the Volturi to explain would be a death trap or hostage situation. Even if they all went, their numbers were not significant enough to get the Volturi to listen. They would have all died except for Edward and Alice if Aro managed to convince them to join afterwards (unlikely).

  • @tealhiid

    @tealhiid

The Volturi would have probably left Jasper and Bella alive just to entice Edward and Alice to go with them. This would be because Aro would be trying to avoid the situation with Marcus, where he is always trying to die because his mate was killed (by Aro in secret).

So, Edward’s behavior and decisions could be looked at through the lens of a 17 year old’s development where he would not have developed his prefrontal cortex as that is the age that he became a vampire

I honestly believe that Irina told the Vultori for a very simple reason. Lingering resentment about the murder of her lover added to a reminder of one of the most traumatic events in her life. Her reaction was, "If I had to loose my mother for this crime. You must suffer, too. You don't get to walk away from all of these crimes unscathed and unbothered while I'm left to suffer in silence. Forced to play nice with you. Nope. I'm snitching. I'm not getting hurt again for you and your terrible decisions." It WAS a means to protect herself. But it was also spiteful. She did want them to suffer. At least when she made the decision to snitch. She very quickly questioned the morality of it. She quickly felt remorse and regret for her betrayal. Even before she knew the truth. Even before she knew she was wrong. Didn't change the fact that she DID betray the Cullens. She betrayed them out of petty spite. She has work to do to repair that relationship and her volatile response to her trauma.

I felt like Irena told on the Collins because she wanted to get back at the Collins because she felt like it was their fault that Laurent died. I feel like she was in her own way getting justice for her man's death.

That wasn't why, but it's understandable how people get there. The reason why is that knowing about an immortal child and not reporting it would result in the death of your whole clan. The only reason her and her sisters didn't die the first time was because their mother kept it a secret from them. Since the Volturi wanted proof that Bella was a vampire they would definitely come across the child. So to save her coven she ultimately decided to tell the Volturi after days of wrestling with the idea. That's why she was so quick to take the blame at the end, because she thought it would save her sister.

I always interpreted what Irena did as revenge because she was heartbroken over Laurent, but I think also the shock of seeing what she thought was an immortal child brought back that trauma in such a way that she probably just wanted to deal with it and get rid of the problem as swiftly and completely as she could

I have been waiting for this video for the longest time!! From what i can remember from the books, Irina brought up the Rennesmee/inmortal child conversation for pride and revenge: in her mind, the Cullens killed Laurent (her partner) and another conversation that was taking place on the vampire world was that the Cullen clan was growing exponentially, which could mean that they wanted to substitute the Volturi and take their power, which Carlisle explains that it was never the intention of approaching friends and family from other countries. Hope it helps! ❤

When you began naming the characteristics of a sensitive "shield" friend and urged people to check in, I began weeping. You should really consider doing a video on Hunger Games when you get the chance. There are so many things that can be discussed from the books like PTSD, addiction, alcoholism, and even the symbolism behind Katniss's relationship with Peeta and Gale. The books also talk a lot about issues that reflect those found in our own society. Anyway I just love Hunger Games and would love if you would do a video covering it.

The "Witnesses" were not only there to testify that the child isn't immortal (bcuz they've witnessed her growing, learning and her heartbeat); their purpose was to give the Volturi time to pause, otherwise they definitely would've just slaughtered the Cullens w/o talking it through... Plus, most of the vampires the Cullens gathered WANTED to fight anyway. But what REALLY made them pause was the wolves. Aro had prior knowledge of their existence through Irena's memories, but he probably didn't expect that many of them - as more vampires gathered, the more the wolf packs grew... and I think one of the Volturi brothers is afraid of wolves. Aro* couldn't just start executing the Cullens AND their witnesses w/o experiencing casualties on their own side. So he chose to talk instead. Edited for typos.

I started watching your videos because this series came across my recs page. Therapy and psychology in general fascinate me, especially since I started taking my writing more seriously as an adult. I've learned so much through you. I'm a HUGE Twilight fan and I feel the same for about 99% of your takes. It's been fun and engaging listening to you and talking back to my computer even though you can't hear me lol. I'd LOVE if you did A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J Maas! It's a series of five books and is another one of my favorites. You might enjoy it, you might not (it's usually a hit or miss for people because of one thing in particular (NO ONE SPOIL IT PLEASE)). There's a lot to talk about in the series and I'd love to hear it from you, plus it's super fun and adventurous with amazing world building.

Yes, I was in a relationship with someone who put me down all the time. He'd belittle me and be demeaning about anything I suggested, talk to me with exasperation and condescension. I stopped sharing my thoughts or only did so when speaking softly and as if I was confused or unsure. I felt unvalued, small, and dumb. He'd either gaslight me about what he was doing or not even acknowledge it, and when I finally confronted him about it before we broke up, he admitted it's because he always felt inferior and like he was wrong. He also had other characteristics like isolating me from my friends and was very possessive of my time. I don't know if he realized it but he was very emotionally manipulative. Frankly, it doesn't matter if he knew it or not - he did it. I remember myself shocked in the last week of our relationship that I'd let it go on for so long. There are a lot of reasons, but the main reasons are that I dismissed it the first few times as maybe him just being irritable for some reason, and over time I convinced myself it was all in my head. It was only when I had separation from him that I was able to realize what was going on. It's easy for it to get bad when you're being isolated (and then begin to isolate yourself) and don't talk to friends and family about what's going on. All I can do now is recognize and learn from it, and know I won't let it happen in the future.

Hi Steph, Thanks for another great video, I've really enjoyed these analyses you've done of the twilight series. I am a child development specialist/social worker now turned graduate student in conflict & religion studies, and I thought your inclusion of reaction formation was extremely interesting. I actually have a fellow student who is doing a lot of research into moral injury and it reminded me very much of this. Would you be able to do a video on moral injury from a psychologists perspective? Perhaps including the possible risks of reaction formation? (I don't know if these exist but that seems likely to me from what I do know) Keep going with the videos! Perhaps too serious for this channel, but my suggestion for a series analysis would be the series 'Dopesick'
