Therapist and Vocalist React to Killpop - Slipknot
Jake Luhrs, vocalist of August Burns Red, and Therapist Taylor Palmby analyze the lyrics of "Killpop" by Slipknot. They discuss how the song paints a picture of a painful cycle that many people get stuck in which is believing they constantly have to prove they are worthy of love. This performance-based cycle becomes a prison that feels difficult to break free from. The song provides the answer to this which is breaking free of the prison and practicing self-love.

This song is about Corey's love/hate relationship with the music industry

Yeah, he said it himself but I think it's mostly an agressive call to his inner demon I guess.

Interesting how, even in psychology, context is important... Without said context your interpretation is pointless/useless. An important lesson for any field... That said, I appreciate the approach even if it falls short. Progress is desired over perfection.

@@inarael7723 Agreed 😆
The song is my reflection on my relationship with music. That's who the 'she' is. And not just music, but the music industry in general. So there's a love-hate relationship there that really kind of comes into view." Corey Taylor
I absolutely love how during the entire song, he's dead silent and still, and she's having the best uncontrolled headbanging sesh ever. Clearly she's found something she never knew she needed
OMFG, this discussion really opened my mind to some things in my life. I still have to deal with validation issues daily but, I am slowly improving. Metal music is one of the few things that worked for me avoiding severe depression because it is so relatable to me helping me introspect. Thank you for the video!
thanks guys, i actually needed to hear this. much appreciated. great reaction
Ok, that "Die and f*cking love me" explanation got me goosebumps... Thanks for that!
They actually hit it spot on. Toxic relationships come in many forms, whether with a partner, a company, a customer, a fan, an entire industry... If he never said it was about the music industry no one would know. But as Corey said himself and as most artists will say, this song has a life of its own, and whatever it means to you is what it means to you.

25 year and this band has 6 full length studio albums. 25 years and just now they are getting out of their contract. That's a toxic relationship if ever there was one. I know people who have been in toxic relationships for longer than 25 years.
I stumbled upon this video today and glad I did. Thought that he was speaking to me. Definitely subscribed.
I love this song. I have now watched your video on it 4 times and I get something different from it every time. I told my 16 year old transgender daughter to watch it because of the relationship she has with her dad. Your channel has helped me so much. I love the music, lyrics are so important to me and I love the way you put a therapeutic spin on them. I think your channel is helping me more then my therapist is. I'm in recovery and it really helps to find an outlet for feelings besides just the meetings because not all my feelings have to do with drugs and alcohol. Thank you for heart support
I absolutely love the interpretations of these songs!!
I love this song. I've never seen anyone react to it. Thanks guys
@heartsupport you guys are great. I'm particularly looking forward to her reaction to pulse of the maggots. 😊
I am impressed you figured it out most Corey's songs go over people's head . He has great word play and it's always a deep meaning in every song .
i love Slipknot even more bcs of ur breakdowns.ty ;)
Awesome breakdowns on all the videos, thank you for all you do. Question, will you breakdown Pantera's "This Love"
I like this back and forth between you two. This was a great vid.
I've always heard, "just love yourself." I fully understand how beneficial that could be, but how do I just start loving myself, when hating myself is all that I know, and therefore, my most deep-seeded defense mechanism? If I hate myself, no one can hurt me more than I hurt me... How do I overcome that?

I totally relate. My self hatred had kept me from being harmed by outside opinions. People try to insult me and harsh me, but they fail miserably and it absolutely drives them nuts. Is that bad of me to feel OK with them having no power over my self perception? Can't hurt me at all, Only I hold that power.

You overcome it by rooting out the core negative beliefs in your subconscious. At least that’s a good place to start. Personal Development School can help you do this.
Absolutely, our will and therefore intent determines who we become not necessarily just the environmental circumstances that we live through. They will most definitely affect you but you don't have to let yourself become them. I find when we're hurt and want to be hurt for any kind of reason it's usually because we are validating for ourselves to take the blame and wallow in that realization rather than confronting and challenging it.

Also when Corey says "Die and fucking love me" you could say he's singing it about himself or more specifically that part of himself that hated himself. That what his journey is about and by this point he was well aware of that. The first two albums from Slipknot is the wallowing in the hurt pain and using it as a fire to let yourself burn in. After the passing of Paul Grey the group as a whole was kind of forced to see parts of themselves that they were ignoring or resenting and you can see them accepting that ugliness through the next 3 albums with less direct themes of death and more just relatable depressive thoughts and mindsets. To give people hope because they weren't given any and they know how much you have to struggle to find those answers on your own.
I love your input on this song/video. However this is actually a song about Corey Taylor's love and hate relationship with the music industry. I've actually seen the interview of him stating that. How they need each other and "she" in the song is the music Industry
Watching this I realise I have been on both sides of this. Being in a toxic relationship doesn't necessarily mean either person is toxic just the situation. There was one party so interested in me it was embarrassing and I finally realised I was being unfair (the attention was nice so it took a while to realise what I was actually doing) then there was another party I really liked being around but they clearly didn't feel the same way but kept me in contact just enough to make me think the was a potential something. I figured out both "relationships" were toxic to me in pillar opposite ways and to them respectfully. It's kind of a hard pill to swallow but I see it now.
Yall got Jake Luhrs on the fucking channel! Hell yeah! ABR has been my favorite band for like 20 years hahaha
“Maybe I should let her go, but not until she loves me” Resonates to me with the feeling of guilt from someone who harmed someone else. “I should let go. Not until she knows that I know and regret what I did.”
Slipknot brings new perspectives in thinking & mindset.
He's into Pilkingtonism one of the main tenants is "Just keep talking until your mouth comes up with something good."
I love that we have a new slipknot fan here!!!!!!!!
Ima say Disasterpiece with lyrics an metalbolic till its done haha love the videos very insightful an love someone becoming a new slipknot fan
Watching him watch Slipknot on the first verse was hilarious. Completely immersed in the lyrics of one of the best if not the best lyricists in metal.

Man i feel like yall were reading me as a book with this lol. i was like damn... why this sound so much like me... lol
Man... you gotta react to Iowa. (The song, not the whole album) One of, if not the darkest song Slipknot has ever produced.
Just like my 19 year marriage that ended now u guys explaining the song makes more sense and also makes sense why I love this song I had a feeling that's what it ment
Haven't seen any Meshuggah on this channel yet so would be interesting to see you react to their song Straws Pulled At Random.
Hey Taylor. I know you've been on a bit of a Slipknot kick, but I'd really like to see your take on To The Flowers by While She Sleeps. Love the work you do for all of us.
You guys got good synergy for this! :P
Such a good song.
I love Jake Luhrs
That shit is dope bro❤
you fuckers held up a mirror to my face for the first time. kinda broke me for today. thanks braj and brajette.
Can you do Not Long For This World as a next reaction? That song is very moving.
De verdad es wild
In Killpop, the "She" means the Music Industry
You would probably LOVE Disasterpiece. Heavy lyrics and an amazing song sonically.
Considering it's about Corey's relationship with the music world, the ups and downs, the abuse he and the rest of the band endured during the recording of some of their albums, I really wonder what the therapist would have to say knowing that if she rewatched this. This is one of their best songs IMO.

Technically what they're saying about the "she" still applies. Having to prove his feeling of worthiness to the industry before he can walk away. It's not all bad, there are good parts to the relationship... etc. Relationships are relationships whether they're romantic/ professional, with another person/ thing/ situation... it all still applies, it's just the context in which it's interpreted. But yeah, I bet their reactions would be the same but maybe stated a little more... customized(for lack of a better term).
Killpop is the only song that helped me understand myself, I have not related it to relationships or whatever, but my whole life I struggled to get better cause in order to do that, one must first be able to accept and understand oneself, right? So.. in short, this song helped me understand that I'm happy when I'm capable of helping others, saving them from themselves, while at the same time, I'm also most happy with myself while being in the middle of a phase where I'm most self-destructive. And I can take it, so much that it scares people. Which is incredibly counter-intuitive. So I just like to also mention that, this song, to me, is more about the relationship I have with myself, within myself vs towards others than in any other type of relationship.
@heartsupport honestly it's been a very long time since I could say I love myself at least since elementary school I'm 30 now and I can't seem to do anything right. Maybe I could if I started my ADHD meds again, but the last time I tried that it made me feel like a zombie. Like I could watch somebody get stabbed and just be like "meh..." but without it I'm too slow or too clumsy to actually be a mechanic, which honestly ain't even what I really want to be.
Awesomee
You should react and analyze eyeless by slipknot, it will be pretty interesting, good video btw
❤
I would love to see you react to Eyeless by them
There are actually two girls in the video and instead of having identical makeup they have opposing makeup so that when they stand side by side they look like separate people but when they face each other they are reflections of each other, which illustrates for everything the band loves and hates about the music industry (which the song is about) they are self-aware that they are the reason why the relationship continues. They hate it for what it is, but they love it for what it gives them. Which can be applied to romantic relationships as well for obvious reasons. It reminds me of the concept of twin flames; which is a Vedic belief that soul mates who are meant to be together by divine providence are separate people and even when they do not seem to be on the same page they are actually a reflection of each other and the only reason why they don't realize it is because they both have their own preconceptions about the other person. Allowing their own egos to constantly get in the way of their connection, and no, I am not talking about the stupid "Twin Flames" MLM cult either.
Hey have you reacted to August Burns Red songs yet? If not, please do!
Please, do reaction to Slipknot - Nameless ❤
Missing out on the band Imminence with new single Continuum
Can you do Disasterpiece live in London?!
The song is a metaphor about his and the band’s relationship with the music industry. For example you create a song that you work hard on and you truly love. Then the industry changes parts of the song until it is unrecognizable from what it was. Now they can’t put out a song whining about the music industry or tearing it apart, so they used a metaphor so they can express their rage about it. It is a very common thing for them and other bands to do.
But I got the message I went through a toxic relationship with a narcissist ex. 😮😢it took me my soul to get out.
I think Life Expectancy From Ventana would be a good one to react to
You should check out vexed- trauma euphoria. Music video or one take which ever

Iowa, goodbye and eyeless next
Bruh!!! Every event is neutral because its a matter of personal perspective!! That has blown my mind!! Because I'm sure if every person watching this thinks about something they have said either nice or nasty to someone! Once you've said it you feel a different way..... but how has what you said effected the person your saying it to???? Its completely neutral!! MIND = BLOWN!!! 🤯🤯
I never really dove into the meaning of this song, and I didn't know about Corey saying it's about the music industry, but the song almost sounds like self-harm. "She knows not to leave a mark that I can see," "No-one hurts this pretty girl, but her"... and then he talks about how beautiful 'she' is, but it seems to be a beauty that 'she' can't see in herself. I dunno, I got strange ideas, anyhow 🤷
Sid dancing is the best.
Cry for Me Sky (Eulogy of the Scorned) · DevilDriver🖤🖤🖤🤟
Please you need to watch From can to can't by Corey Taylor you will enjoy it I promise you ❤️
You should try skeptic from slipknot it's another tribute to Paul
You really need to see Slipknot live plus you also need to check out Coreys other band Stone Sour and his solo stuff. Stone Sour is not as heavy as Slipknot but their songs also have a lot of different meanings and messages and they don't wear the mask. I would recommend Bother by Stone Sour as your first song to analyze. It's pretty deep.
React to a liars funeral by slipknot. You can hear the pain in his voice when he screams liars
Its really like this. As in a rap genre. Eminem and 50 Cent are almost calling all the shots. But they are truly most violent psychotic+creative ppl in that industry RN. Their IQ are on the roof. They have destroyed about 5 careers and some more are coming. Trust me on this topic. They are humble ppl but when someone even tries to poke them, they will create tsunami that washes opposition away. Dr.Dre is also an perfectionist. He cannot and do not wanna see what rap game has become. (Dre, being almost boss, afte Jimmy)
For shits and giggles, I would love her to react to cory taylor singing the sponge Bob theme
Please do iowa the song, by slipknot...it is over 15 minutes long but, it's one of the darkest songs I've heard

Next do the Heretic Anthem, live on Conan.... Blew me away first time seeing it

Donde está el amor en esta canción
Definitely give a listen to Gojira' s The Art Of Dying. How I see the message of the song is that you should do something meaningful with your life instead of watching TV or KZread etc. all day. You are going to die eventually and you have to come in terms with how you have lived your life before you can die peacefully.
