How very true. My dad bought me a brand new bike one christmas. My very first 2-wheeler! Also - as an extra , a bell. Very pretty one that cost his 2/6d. i.e. 12 & 1/2p. After going up and down the pavement a few times, he let go of the saddle and I wobbled and fell against a wall grazing my right knee pretty badly. What did he do? Shouted at me for damaging the bell. So I know where Micky is coming from...

You must have mis remembered, the cheapest childs two wheeler (with stabilisers) in the Halfords 1965 brochure was £8,4s, 6d. Even if you went back another 15 years which was peak cycling in the uk and Raleigh plus a host of other manufacturers were knocking out bikes by the millions yearly. youd never have been able to buy a new bike under a pound, not even close.

My dad had gout. He was big man, built like a brick sh*thouse and as hard as they come. He could swing a 14 lb sledgehammer like it was a feather duster. When he was in his 60s and right through to his 80s, though, his gout would flare up, sometimes in his foot, but usually in his thumbs. He couldn't describe how painful it was. Didn't have the words. It affects different people to different degrees, but any movement he made with the affected joints, even if it was just from his pulse, even just from breathing hard, was agony. His hands would swell up and he'd lie in bed, not daring to move, wishing that he could have the damn things amputated. Yes, he'd gladly have had them AMPUTATED. I felt so bloody helpless and useless. A doctor once told me that gout could feel like the joints were being burned and crushed and twisted and pierced with red-hot needles all at the same time. For my dad, an attack could last over a week. Cartoons and comics show gout as a bit of a laugh - some old Victorian army Colonel with his foot all bandaged up - but I hope nobody reading this ever has to deal with it. Having said that, Micky's a top geezer, and I love the guy down in the Comments ['The Lime Tree L&M'] who joked, "Is it gout, or is it gout gout?" :-)
