Theme of the Week #8 - Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker Main Theme

Музыка

Track Title: Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker Main Theme
Movie: Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker
Composer(s): Kristopher Carter
Theme of the Week: November 24, 2008
Kristopher Carter was also the composer of the "Batman Beyond" television series-- Due to budget restraints he was rarely able to incorporate orchestral pieces into his techno-rock sound created for the new Batman.
For "Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker" Carter was finally able to add orchestral pieces and experiment more with his main theme originally heard in the opening credits of the show. Here, the theme is lengthened, slowed and varied into a more epic piece of music to create the sense that this new, and younger, Batman is maturing.
Kenny Wayne Shepherd lent a hand on the extravagant, blues-inspired guitar pieces of Batman's theme. Much of Kristopher Carter's theme was based on his work with the series' theme-- In the series he received help from Shirley Walker; the composer of "Batman: The Animated Series" and protege of Danny Elfman.

"You know, kids, a lot has changed since your old Uncle Joker's been away. New Gotham, new rules, even a new Batman. But now I'm tanned, I'm rested and I'm ready to give this old town a wedgie again!" The writers really knew how to give The Joker a resurrection with that line alone. Especially considering for a direct-to-dvd release this got darker than even Mask of the Phantasm and that's one of if not the best Batman movies ever made.

There actually is something very important conveyed in the animated saga: Bruce let tragedy define him, but Terry never did. Terry had people who loved him and had a reason to fight and live, whereas Bruce never truly did. He created Batman more to appease himself than to actually make a difference. Even Freeze himself stated that his attempts to create a surrogate family reflected his selfishness; Nightwing later said that he sabotaged others because he knew he could never have anything himself. He created the Bat family to make something in his image, but because he taught them to be like him, they turned out cold and purposeless; that’s why he didn’t bring them back together, because he realized his mistake of making others like him, bitter and regretful. When he pulled a gun on a criminal, he realized he wasn’t Batman, or worthy to be him; in fact, on both accounts, he never was. How can you be worthy of something that never was supposed to be in the first place? Over the years he cut himself off emotionally, to where he was completely bitter, spiteful and apathetic, in order to keep the pain, guilt and shame away. He was forcefully torn from this state when Neo-Joker hit him with a lethal dosage of Joker Venom, causing him to remember the agony and suffering that he foolishly believed he was exempt from, which was the villains intention the whole time. He forced Bruce to laugh at how pathetic and worthless his life was. Joker at his core believed that life itself was pain, which is why he loved making people suffer, so he could give them the truth by spreading the pain around. Bruce could never stop him because pain defined him, and Joker fully knew this. He wanted to prove that anyone could lose themselves with enough suffering; Joker despised anything that lived and could love and be happy. The Venom was symbolic in that it forced others to laugh at the meaningless thing that was their life and life itself; he escalated his plans and influence as he was no longer content with Gotham receiving his message-he wanted the whole world to suffer, to plant and present to the new generation his reality. His genius was unparalleled, as he designed a nanite parasite piloted by an A.I. encoded with not only his DNA, memories and personality, he also designed and trained the A.I. with his very thought patterns, causing it to activate and alter Tim’s physiology into an exact replica of the Joker’s when he died in a time when Bruce was at his weakest and Gotham its least suspecting. He wanted to destroy the people Terry cared about, because he knew he wasn’t truly beaten as Bruce was. Joker wanted Terry to be just like Bruce so they could continue this dance forever; heck, he could have probably replicate the chip to continue the struggle with generations of Bats, making the conflict truly eternal and immortal. Terry was fundamentally different in every way. He moved on from his tragedy, and never let anything slow him down or defeat him. He took care of those he loved and valued them like any other person would, never fighting just for himself like Bruce did. Bruce never trusted anyone else more than Terry because of this. At first he refused Terry out of concern that he would be just like him, but soon realized that he surpassed him in every way; he even himself admitted this, saying that he failed everyone because he believed that Batman made him who he was, but knew that Terry made Batman a true hero because of his stoic heart and selfless, unwavering spirit. Terry knew who he was and that Batman was only what he chose to sustain, not become it himself. Joker was defeated because he never once counted on facing anyone like Terry, believing that anyone under Bruce’s tutelage would be an indistinguishable clone of him. Terry, while matured by Bruce’s wisdom, always retained his spirit and cleverness, fighting with his selfless craftiness and will rather than selfish rage and hatred. Like Bruce, the Joker believed the cowl made the man, not the other way around. Terry actually mocked Joker with his own ideals, causing him to enter an unstable, vengeful rage, which proved his downfall, as, like Megatron from Transformers Prime, he had never been on the receiving end of his own ruthlessness. Joker pinned, strangled and sadistically taunted him to make him prove his words, to laugh at the face of an evil that was seemingly below him; he tried to kill Terry to assert that his hate was inescapable and would always live beyond him. Terry fake laughed as a final insult to him before destroying the chip, symbolizing that he didn’t fear suffering, but braced it to do what needed to be done. Terry proved that pain didn’t define someone, but the acceptance and endurance of it made someone who they are, which was something The Joker could never accept or understand. Overall, Terry proved himself worthy of the cowl not just by stopping evil, but by staying true to himself and giving it a reason for being. His final scene of flying out over Neo-Gotham is the best as Terry accepts the life he’s led; with the greatest scourge of Gotham finally forced to face oblivion, Terry flies out to protect his city with his newfound understanding and acceptance.

Because he makes sense because unlike character like Miles Morales and Jane Foster Thor he has a very different supporting cast, it makes sense he’d carry on the legacy as Bruce is old af, He’s a drastically different character as Bruce was in his eyes a noble crusader since the moment his parents died whereas terry steals the Batsuit and becomes Batman through selfishness but learns to be better as the series progressed, also new setting/aesthetic, Terry is young to contrast the normal 25-35 yo Batman were used to.

In Justice League Epilogue, elderly Amanda Waller claimed that Terry Mcguinness didn't have Bruce's brilliant deductive reasoning, yet in Return Of The Joker, it was Terry who figured out Tim Drake was the Joker, as well as the purpose of the stolen parts, as well as the Joker's hideout at the Jolly Jack candy factory. It was also Terry who ultimately defeats the Joker using the Joker's own joy buzzer. Seems to me Terry is every bit Bruce's mental and psychological successor as well as his physical one.

I think it comes down to a difference in approach, knowledge, personality and style. Terry doesnt have Bruce's sheer scientific knowledge and specialist training but his deductive skills are definitely on par. Hell there are plenty of things he even does much better such as his more frequent use of disguises and deception to gain information outside of the cowl throughout the series. I think it especially helps that whilst Bruce was always very removed from Gotham- watching it from high above in both his lives. By contrast Terry has always been a part of it, he spends his time outside of being Batman as a normal teenager. And Above all else because of that he has a degree of empathy, compassion and understanding of people Bruce never did. Not to say that Bruce had none at all (I mean in the DCAU we have at least 2 Robins as proof of that), but simply that Terry's is far greater. I mean think about it, for all his skill, brilliance and genius and the many years he fought the Joker Bruce could never find a way to truly beat him. Yet in his first (and Last) outing against a version of him with pretty much All Bruce's combat skill Terry very quickly manages to deconstruct the Joker on a personal level (which contributes largely to his defeat) simply because he was able to understand who the Joker was. Not as A Villain or a Threat or an Obstacle but as an actual Person.

This is just beyond awesomeness. I don't care whether other viewers like it or not, but Batman (both Bruce Wayne & Terry McGinnis) proved their part with great performance and succeeded to conquer their fans' mind with their attitude, performance & theatrical game changing surprises. At the end of the day they proved it Batman character is beyond someone's deduction and assumption. That's why Batman is the only superhero in the Justice League with no supernatural power. Maybe it is the only Superhero character with a possibility of real life inauguration. I'll simply say that "ALL HAIL TO BATMAN- THE DARK KNIGHT".

Gotham Knight was an anthology film of six shorts made by four different Japanese animation studios in association with DC Comics & Warner Bros. Animation. Its producers have acknowledged the film to be capable of fitting within almost any Batman continuity, but it was not intended for the DC cartoon canon that began in 1992. Although originally planned to take place in Nolan's universe between Batman Begins & The Dark Knight, it has since been confirmed as non-canonical to the TDK trilogy.
