THEIR FINEST HOUR speech by Winston Churchill [BEST SOUND]

"This was their finest hour" or "Their finest hour" is a famous historic speech delivered by Winston Churchill to the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom on June 18, 1940.
Churchill reflected on the dire situation in France and talked about the looming Nazi invasion of the British Isles. But most of all, with his unshaken determination he rallied the British People and prepared the Nation for resistance: If we fail, then the whole world, including the United States, including all that we have known and cared for, will sink into the abyss of a new dark age made more sinister, and perhaps more protracted, by the lights of perverted science. Let us therefore brace ourselves to our duties, and so bear ourselves, that if the British Empire and its Commonwealth last for a thousand years, men will still say, This was their finest hour.
"This was their finest hour" was the last of three major speeches given around the period of the Battle of France (the others two being "Blood, toil, tears, and sweat" speech of 13 May, and ""We shall fight on the beaches" speech of 4 June). Events developed dramatically over the five-week period, and although broadly similar in themes, each speech addressed a different military and diplomatic context.

"Hitler knows, that he would have to break us in this island or lose the war", I don't understand how Churchill was able to walk carrying those big balls. It hasn't been a thousand years yet, I'm just in 2020, but I can definitely say: that was their finest hour indeed

@James Henderson That isn't true. He hadn't expected to invade the UK because he thought that the conquest of France would end the war in Europe, but Operation Sea Lion was organized when that assumption proved false. Executing Sea Lion while planning Barbarossa wouldn't have been that unusual. There were numerous times during the war that the Allies fought one battle while planning the next.

I for one, am still proud that I lived through it all, and now in my 85th year, I still hold my head high. WE KEPT CALM AND CARRIED ON. We no longer have the power to influence the modern World, however it was worthwhile at the time.

Well actually like one born every ten years for his age because there was a man called Mustafa Kemal Atatürk which born in 1881, churchill born in 1874 so there is only 7 years of a gap between these two great men's for the history. İ know that currently with the current situation of turkey you wouldn't agree with me but in 1930s turkey was a modern European nation unlike now and the only reason that turkey was a modern European nation was Atatürk. Without him there wouldn't be a turkey. There would be a tsarist regime in Russia without Atatürk defeating allies in Çanakkale strait which would mean İstanbul and warshaw would be occupied by Russia. So he was one of the greatest men in the history. And if you look at those thousand years between 874 and 1874 you will see a lot more great man for history

Some say he is a bad man but I'll leave it to machiavelli " if a man is determined to only do good then he will be destroyed amongst so many who are evil." People cant begin to understand what it would have taken to keep Britain in the war and for Churchill to set aside his personal hatred for communism and forge a partnership with Stalin, had we listen to Winston he said all along that Hitler was trouble and needed to be put in check before it takes a world war to do so.

"Hitler knows that he will have to break us on this island or lose the war" was brilliant phrasing. It's true he was a pretty poor student at school and one of his teachers said to him u will never amount to anything and he replied u are wrong one day when the country is in a series fix it will fall on me to lead us out of trouble. In 1940 when they called on him to be leader he said I've always known this day would cum I feel like I'm walking with destiny.

at various times small groups of men or sometimes one man curves the arc of history . Winston Churchill was one of these men. What a debt the free world owes him and the British Empire. I am humbled by his speeches . Modern leaders could learn a great deal by understanding his approach

1:25 the young and/or illinformed may find these words insulting. Nay. These are words of respect and solidarity of the true meanings of freedom. Sir Winston Churchill, the greatest individual in European history. He, alone, made a stand, when others plead "neutrality" or worse. Never forget that fact.

As an American and not always a fan of England, even I was emotionally moved by this speech and the apparent strong will of the British people. Protecting an island country isn’t easy - especially when a world war rages at the island’s back door! When France fell in 1940, Britain stood singlehandedly alone to fight Hitler for 2 years! That is true national grit, determination and strong patriotic pride in its finest hour! - “Never yield to force. Never yield to the apparently overwhelming might of the enemy. We will never give up! We will never, never surrender!”

I’ve had my own personal moments with Brits and not all of them were good. The bad moments were with those Brits who call Americans stuffy and putting themselves as the country who had a massive empire, developing the world and having once had the most powerful navy in the world. I don’t believe in empires. The Brits were harsh taskmasters. And images of their brutal takeover of South Africa still reverberate in my mind after seeing the movie of Britain finally conquering Chaka Zulu - determined to conquer and break him….

This speech of Churchill should go down in history as one of the 10 greatest speeches of all time, All Europe lay at the feet of the Fuhrer and only Britain stood in his path, he just had to knock them out and he would and perhaps have ended the war and might not even have thought of invading Russia, but Churchill's stubbornness made Hitler take the gamble of invading the Soviet Union and the tide turned against Germany. How one man stood against the mightiest empire ever known and still came out victorious will be a point thst will be debated for the next thousand years
