Malinda Dee's smile is immovable as she walks down the catwalk, in a luxuriant green dress, her neck covered in diamonds. Yet behind this polished look lies the story of a major banking scandal. A former employee at Citibank, Malinda is now in jail awaiting trial for allegedly stealing from her clients - something even her lawyer has not denied: "Malinda would use the clients' money, then she would return it". She was allowed to carry on unchecked by Citibank because of the number of high-profile clients she brought in. Yet while the bank was losing millions and not even noticing at the top end, at the other end its heavy-handed tactics cast a dark cloud over the country. Irzen Octa had accrued a credit card debt of $5,000 and was subject to intimidation by Citibank's debt collectors. When he visited his local bank branch he ended up dead. "Lots of people have the same experience of being terrorised", says Octa's wife. Yet despite the corruption, big credit rating agencies are about to pump billions of investment into the system. "Whether it's a dark alley of debt collectors or the Ferraris of Malinda, it just shows how acceptable it is in this country to make money by any means."

Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia - the list goes on and on. We're naive if we think we dont have corrupt officials in the West, but its the blatant abuse of power that is so stunning in southeast Asia - when the Police are literally afraid to arrest a hit-and-run driver because of his connections, you know you're living in a dysfunctional society.

Ms Pretty Kawaii, corruption in the Philippines is systemic from the bottom underlings of the Government ranks & all the way to the Top which we refer to as President. Now, the country has elected the son of a former dictator Pres. Marcos to the highest office of the land. Apparently, Filipinos have never learned their past. It is bound to repeat itself. During the pandemic, Phil-Health a Universal Health System of the Philippines lost $1.3Billion due corruption. The Govt. could not account for where these huge amount of money for purpose of procuring Corona Virus vaccines could not be accounted for. Imagine, $1.3billion is a lot of money. Imagine how many poor populace could have been saved if vaccines were available. The government has no accountability whatsoever as if nothing happens. This country profess to be the only Catholic country is Southeast Asia but yet those who are in power does not practice their being a Christian. Their love of money & power consumed them.

Citibank has used the same practices throughout Southeast Asia. I am familiar with a Citibank credit card holder that earned about 15000 baht per month and was allowed to amass a 2.5 million baht debt. Then the debt collectors came. Of course the card holder could not pay the debt and lost everything including a job.

Citibank came to UK in early seventies as Citibank Trust Ltd and they operated so much fraud and bought so many judges and lawyers and there had so many cases against them so they sold up and recycled themselves into what it has now become. A thief. All their employees are fraudsters, lawyers are part of their fraud on customers. I know many of their victims. Come to UK and USA and speak to all their victims.

Thank you for posting this, quite shocking and contradictory, a unique perspective of Indonesia's day-to-day reality. The rich is getting richer by any means (exploit and extort if necessary), while the poor is getting more miserable by the hour. A total show of insecurity, losing meaning when left without (unnecessary) belongings. I'd say this is a big slap to The national education system. it certainly needs to be revised so that it can open awareness & conscience while at the same time shielding from consumerism mindset. Thank you for the reminder 🙏

Indonesia or any other country must have a good judgment when enbracing traditional banking of the west. The sole purpose of any wealthy person is to stay well- heeled. So why is it a surprise these charcter acted in that most protective fashion? It only show how ill- informed the domestic populations are and how easy it is to defraud them. A better paradigm would be to abolish the state, as it has only become a means of the wealthy stay rich. That could take a millennium of abuse before such delict be rectified to include wealth creation as a service of government....

Indonesia is currently in the stage of minimizing the opportunities for corruption. But still not enough to reduce the gap between rich and poor. You know, we have just left the shadows of corruption way of life during the New Order era. The average Indonesian people really understand corruption, as what they think as a common thing to do, as long as not to far. What we cannot endure is the poverty gap. That's why most corruptors in Indonesia are very generous towards the poor.

This is sad. Indonesians didn't have this culture of debt before the foreign banks. In elementary school we were taught it was virtuous to be "rajin menabung" (diligent about saving). Rentenirs (loan sharks) were considered villains who preyed on the vulnerable. I know it's common in Western countries to be in consumer debt, but at least don't bring that culture here. It's infuriating. I get so annoyed by those calls offering me line of debt. 😿☹️

  • @Kyle-sg4rm

Who is bringing that culture there? Who brought it to the "western countries"? I never asked for it - neither did millions/billions of other people. I suspect Indonesia and other countries of the "east" might be setup to replace the "west", while the "western countries" become more impoverished, with slave labour driving them forward. Yin yang, duality, etc...... They (the evil ones) use this to control the world. And around and around it goes........ People will tear down the system, when they're instructed to tear down the system. And only because it's in the interest of the manipulators, who never get torn down and operate behind the scenes, walking among us, etc. They are everywhere and occupy all positions. Many aren't what you might call financially rich - but they get payed in energy, through helping enable evil deeds. And presumably have their seat at the table guaranteed once all the peasants are completely in line. Most people can't see them. But when you can see them, you realise they are everywhere - sucking the life out of people, arrogantly. Body language - watch it closely. They don't believe they lie, etc, or have any karmic debt if they disclose their evil intentions to you, however subtle that disclosure may be. This is also how they subtly communicate to each other. A nose scratch, a clearing of the throat, a knock on the table, a sniff, sealed lips...... This evil operates in networks. Families. And is international.

Indonesia and other third world countries are just more on the nose than most places, but it happens literally everywhere. I know some people in my country who does corrupt stuff, but none of them was jailed or even though of them being corrupt, and there is couple of reasons for that, firstly they never stand out from the crowd of regular people, they live in middle class house, have a middle class car, don't wear expensive clothing, they never show off, second thing is they never take bribes in huge amounts of money, because the more you are greedy the more you will bring attention from authorities, also these bribes are not serious offence, like someone wants to get a visa for visit but cant due to some problems, so he provides approval to come without a a issues from immigration, so in the end everywhere there is and will be corruption, the only ones who get caught is the dumbest ones who try to show off how good thy're life is, low key people will invest instead in business and other things but never show they're wealthy life.

Hey Journeyman, the world would be very interested to know about corruption in the US, pertinently DC & the Military Industrial Complex. Recently, US$53 billion of military aid to Ukraine was approved by the senate. But people are saying that almost every cent of the aid in cash would go to the pockets of the MIC & the politicians in DC while Ukraine would receive the aid only in weapons. Just $20 billions of this money would have been enough to provide housing for all the hundreds of thousands of homeless Americans living in the streets of the main cities of America.
