    the C64 is the one iconic 8-bit, early 80s home computer that best represents that era. so many were made that it is highly recognizable - even all these many decades later. and it really was a gaming console disguised as a general computer

    You know, I'm in Ohio, and I've had the European version for about a year now. This update just about makes it perfect for me - to the point where it completely scratches the itch I had to get a 64 up and working again. Not having to worry about a CRT, or SD2IEDC or anything like that. It's not as perfect feeling as that Bare Metal project, but this has the real keyboard... I don't know. I think I'm at the conclusion that this is the best retro device I've ever seen.

    I used to reset my 64 many years ago with the tape drive. There was a ground strap that hung off it and you could ground the 3rd or 4th pin from the right on the user port (the port to the left of the machine) using that little ground strap. I read it in one of the magazines.

Perhaps even just by renaming the d64 file names with the various switches without having to remove the USB stick, take it to another computer, rename the files, etc. Still - you're abolsutely right about making sure the makers are aware of the uptake of the firmware and it's brilliant they're still developing it.

    The "good music" during the interludes of Frantic Freddy is actually "Don't Bring Me Down" by Electric Light Orchestra (or ELO). Oh man, Super Snapshot. I had one of those. Loved that cartridge. They were made in my home province. I knew the guy who made those and many of the contributors... some of who went to my school. The creator used to come to our C64 user groups. He once showed me a cartridge with a bunch of games on it. It's nothing incredible by today's standard, but back then before SS, my friends and I used to play darts waiting for games to load and this was with a disk drive. With a cartridge, the games would load instantly. I thought it was incredible. The creator (you can google his name) was a really cool guy. Being young and stupid, I once had an argument with him about notching floppy disks. I forget all the details, but I think his argument was that the reverse side isn't actually made for writing, but most disks do work just because of the way they're made, but that it's not a guarantee. We used to notch disks all the time and they worked fine so I thought he was full of it. If you want to know the details, it's that manufacturers ended up making only one version of floppy disks because it's cheaper to only make one product, but charged more for the double sided ones. The single sided ones were missing a notch on the side of the disk. So the Snapshot guy was technically right that it's not guaranteed, but I was stupid and called him a bunch of names. At the next C64 user group, who shows up but the Snapshot guy himself. Now, insulting someone over a BBS (yeah, remember those?) is easy. But in person, I felt like an idiot and apologized. This is when he showed me the cartridge with all the games and we got to talking a bit. Ended up being a really cool guy. At a later time, I wrote a character editor like the one on the cartridge with split screen so you could see the changes on half the screen, but not affect the editing part. They went with another friend of mine's implementation because his was under 1K IIRC and mine was over 1500 bytes or something like that and I was missing a few features (these numbers could be way off but you get the idea... funny it being literally handful of bytes). But I basically just wanted to see if I could do it. And yes, it was 100% assembly.

    1:25 The hires/non-multicolor graphics makes it look like a Spectrum port. 4:24 Lots of type-in games from magazines for the VIC-20 and tape drive were multi-part as well, since the unexpanded VIC had so little RAM and the BASIC code to set up the programmable characters would take up too much space in the main program, as there would only be 3K left at that point. 3:48 Is a full and faithful replication of the extreme slowness of the hardware tape drive really a desirable feature? Since everything's emulated, can you warp-speed the whole system including the tape drive until the tape program is loaded? 13:31 That's how I did it on the VIC-20. I put tape over the "handle" of the paper clip to prevent the contact points from "creeping". 16:03 Interesting that the game is using Decimal mode at $59A1. 17:02 I suppose it doesn't matter in this case, but you'd think a BIT instruction would be less disruptive to the registers (though chases some flags), or three NOPs. In this particular case, an «STA $042E,X» wouldn't alter anything but takes one extra clock cycle. 19:21 Blindly swapping $DC00 and $DC01 seems kind of dangerous. Does it at least check for a Load opcode before the addresses?

  • @8_Bit

    @8_Bit

    3 жыл бұрын

    Yes, Barnsley Badger does have that Spectrum vibe, but of course C64 does it better with no colour clash :) I now remember hearing about those VIC-20 multi-loads. I went from the Timex/Sinclair 1000, which I couldn't get to load or save at all, to the Commodore 64, so I didn't encounter that. All the C64 games I had on tape (including those typed in from magazines) just loaded in one part, since 64K or even 38911 bytes was huge at first. As far as I know, TheC64 doesn't have a warp mode at all. That would be a nice addition in a future firmware update. re: Joystick swap feature, yeah, it must have more intelligence than just swapping $DC00 and $DC01 blindly. I haven't dug into exactly how it does the detection; in the near future I may be helping to modify/improve the Super Snapshot ROM so that would be an opportunity to look.

    "slowness of the hardware tape drive really a desirable feature?" Yes, actually. This is more obvious on the ZX Spectrum, where some UK users might have a huge library of tape cassette games, sometimes rather rare titles, and no way to copy them onto other medium except through the machine itself. It also gives users the ability to play straight from the original tape machines. Basically you are right about emulation, but the slowness actually gives more options. Like the "Turbo Button" on old PCs.

    I don't mind having to use the flags on the file name - but havina a system to set these within the TheC64 to either rewrite the file names or use some sort of config/overlay file to manage these internally would be fine too - and porbaby easier to implement.

    Thank you for the update Robin - I've been and downloaded / installed the update and it works fine. One think I am having issues with is using TMP and SS at the same time. I write a simple assembly program and even though i have SS loaded in the cart slot i can never get in to the monitor - or it's vice-versa. I can SS up and running but my previously loaded TMP no longer starts at SYS32768 - help me Obi Wan, you're my only hope :-)

    I purchased THEVIC20 which is a special edition of THEC64 on Amazon-UK, although I reside in the U.S. It is basically THEC64 with the default mode being VIC-20 mode. You can go into settings and select C64 mode. The case is identical (except for THEVIC20 key substituting for the C= key) and the multi- color THEVIC20 branding sticker. A newer Joystick without the sticking fire buttons is included. Curiously there are more C64 games than Vic-20 Games. This is not a review merely a "Heads Up" post. It is THEC64 variant. Have fun!

    "The Goonies" was one of my favorite games in the 80s next to "Mounty on the run" (if only because of the great music) on the C-64 as a floppy disk version. And after almost 40 years I can even admit that at the time I only borrowed the game and then removed the copy protection. I just didn't have the money to buy every game I like. And that's how I learned the 6510 assembler code, it was free "The Goonies" war in den 80er Jahren eines meiner Lieblingsspiele neben " Mounty on the run" (schon allein wegen der geilen Musik) auf dem C-64 als Floppydisk Version. Und nach fast 40 Jahren kann ich sogar zugeben, das ich damals das Spiel nur geliehen habe und dann den Kopierschutz entfernte. Ich hatte einfach nicht das Geld, mir jedes Spiel kaufen zu können, das mir gefällt. Und so habe ich den 6510 Assembler Code gelernt, das war kostenlos

    Hi Robin. I'm currently trying to find a C64/C128 for regular use. I do have a restored C128D and unrestored C128 and C64C's. But very little money unfortunately. I don't really have many working 5,25" disks any more, so I load everything from a 1541 Ultimate II cartridge (which is great!). But.. The C128D has a 1571 disk drive built in that wants to be device 8. Single file games will still load if the cartridge is on device 9 (besides the annoying lack of shortcuts for device 9 loading), but multifile games won't. Also, the fan inside the C128D is pretty loud.. So, the options are to sell (some of the) hardware and restore the real C64 or C128, somehow manage to use the C128D or try the TheC64 Maxi. I'm sure the fan in the C128D could be replaced with a Noctua fan which would solve that problem. But are you aware of a hardware mod that would allow me to switch (hardware) the 1571 between device 8 and 9? I know the normal 1571 is able to do that (I still have one), but that option doesn't seem to be available in the C128D.. You've been playing games on the TheC64 Maxi using the USB joystick. Are the timings any better than those in the Speedlink II USB joystick years ago? Because for me, delay on joystick input completely destroys the fun... By the way, I almost finished Frantic Freddy on original hardware with original lives. I couldn't get past the last level (same with H.E.R.O.). I love(d) that game!. Oh, I am in Europe, so getting hold of a TheC64 Maxi is fairly easy. It's fantastic that hardware like that is still being manufactured! And Zzap 64.. Recently got them scanned in digital format (importing is a real faff), and I love it! Thanks for this great channel! I really enjoy it! Oh, and a new game to try: Chiller. Never heard of that one before!

    I didn't even know about the Maxi until today! I know, I've been living under a rock. But, now that I am aware, I know I have to get it. It's possible the original C64 contributed to the end of my marriage back in 1983. My Ex was so jealous of the time I spent that she tried to destroy it while I was at work by cutting the ribbon cable to the keyboard. I surprised myself by splicing/soldering the cable and getting the computer working again. That infuriated her so much that she literally smashed it to beyond repair condition. I was into programming in BASIC with a few machine code subroutines. I wrote hundreds of useless programs of interest only to myself. There were actually only two games I spent much time with: Jumpman, and Fort Apocalypse. I notice the later is not included in the firmware loaded programs. But, I'll assume it is available somewhere.
