Since you are into theatre , You really need to do An Opus called 2112 the comic book version, this is in parts over 21 minutes , It’s about a guy who finds a guitar and brings it to the tyrant leadership, They have banned music in their world The guy tries to convince them that music is fantastic, , They did this song in response to the record company wanting more commercialized radio friendly music , 2112 was the bands response and without Radio Airplay this song launched them in the music scene, via word of mouth ,

The lyrics to 'Limelight' was written by (the late) Neil Peart (drums/ percussion) of Rush about his struggles w/ fame in 1981... Peart was a very shy, sensitive personality who was tall, awkward and not popular in school growing up... He was a nerdy bookworm and got into playing drums as a teen as a hobby for self-esteem... He claimed it was the first time he was admired for anything, and that made him passionate about playing the drums. He went to England to try join a band there, but nothing happened... He returned to Canada and played locally until he got an offer to tour w/ a band called Rush ... He was hesitant about auditioning, but he went and liked the other 2 guys (Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson) and he was picked as the band's drummer... While touring into 1975, Lee and Lifeson felt that Peart could write better lyrics for the band because he was such a heavy reader and so opinionated... Peart accepted the task and would be Rush's full-time lyricist by 1978. The problem was that when Rush started becoming popular by 1977, the band members were suddenly surrounded by fans and admirers on tour... Peart complained that he didn't sign up for having folks knocking on his hotel room door at all hours of the night ... or fans claiming he was the 'greatest' (Peart would later admit that he was embarrassed when strangers approached him and heaped adulation on him). 'Limelight' was his way of telling folks that he was just not the kind of celebrity who revels in attention and can't act like someone's friend when approached by strangers... Lee and Lifeson clarified that Peart was shy, introverted... he didn't mean to upset or disappoint anyone, but his personality was not suited to be one for soaking up public adoration ... even from his fans. In Rush's documentary, bassist Tim Commerford of Rage Against the Machine/ Audioslave recalled being introduced to Neil Peart and talked about how much he admired his work... and Peart seemed uncomfortable and gave him the 'cold shoulder' before a security guard asked Commerford to leave.

This is written about Neil's personal discomfort with his fame and has amazing lyrics relating to this very personal aspect of his life as the "world's greatest drummer" He loved music and performing but was uncomfortable with their success as a band.

It's also indirectly about the relationship between actors/musicians/performers and the audience, and how the reality of achieving a level or celebrity and fame differs from what the audience might perceive it to be. At least when this song was written, celebrity was reserved for those who did something to deserve it. You weren't famous for being famous.

I grew up with Rush and 2112 and hemispheres when I was in 9th grade which my guitar playing Mentor buddy turn me on to one night listening to his 8-track player, it's so inspirational and it just really got to me. Bedazzled musician of many years, I really appreciate it a lot of your comments at the end and your analysis of his voice is quite interesting. I know that there are a lot of comments about 2112, and one thing about doing that is it packages up all these different chapters and so you get to hear the real range of his voice. It's really fascinating. And he is basically singing the part of different characters in this dramatic story. I'm certainly not like a master vocal coach or singer, but I've been around it a long time, and the things that stand out to me with his voice which people either like or don't like but which I personally am fascinated with and love, is a combination of a couple things. Of course he uses a lot of nasality. But I think he uses it in a good way and you have to understand a little context. Go back and listen to their first album before they acquired Neil Peart and it is a very blue collar Rock album but you can tell already that they are on fire. Check out Working Man. Suddenly, you can understand what it would have been like being in a band at that time and the equipment they are playing on and especially the PA system was just so primitive compared to even what the crappiest bar band uses today. So Geddy had to sing over that, and that's when he learned to really project high and with lots of nasality to pierce through the mix. And yet he has a beautiful lower register as well. But once you look at it that way, pay attention to his consonants. The way he works and sings through his consonants and then the way he manipulates his diphthongs, sometimes emphasizing one vowel or the other, it is so effective. Loved your reaction, I don't know what content you normally do but I will probably subscribe just because of this. Maybe also check out some live Elvis Presley. If I Can Dream, which was largely a tribute to Dr Martin Luther King after he was assassinated not far from where Elvis lives and it decimated elvis, this was a risky move to do on television in 1968 but he insisted on it, and it's one of the greatest singing performances ever in my view, although he has very many. Luciano Pavarotti once said that if Elvis had any classical training he might have ended up being the best opera singer of the 20th century.

Watch the comic book version! - The Spirit of Radio - one of their big hits - Working Man live in Cleveland 2011 - three old dudes shredding one of their oldest songs - Subdivisions - add some ‘80’s synth to some great songwriting. - Xanadu live from the 1981 Exit Stage Left tour - you will see them multi-task on multiple instruments and sound like an orchestra - And a bonus: Headlong Flight - from their 19th and final album, you will see they went out with a bang

Another Rush song you may consider Charis is Subdivisions with the video, that song got me thru MANY rough patches, this one does as well. I have heard this song hundreds and hundreds of times and it never seems to get old. Think of it as 3 guys doing solos and time sig changes at the same time and they somehow make it cohesive. Enjoy Charis, they do not have music like this anymore. Subdivisions means compartmentalized similar groups. Rush lived in the subdivisions (housing) of Canada as many of us did during our youth. The song refers to subdivisions of kids, people, and things that are different and subsequently cast out of the popular subdivisions and into the misunderstood category.

Rush has such a vast catalog of music that took 40 years to make... Their early records were progressive rock... This was from 1981 as Rush transitioned into the 80's w/ a modern sound. They ventured into pop music in the 80's w/ synthesizers and electronic music and beats... Rush decided to return to guitar-based music in 1989 and then got back to a heavier sound by 1993. Some of the more popular Rush songs - 'Closer to the heart' ... 'Subdivisions' ... 'The spirit of radio' ... 'Freewill' ... 'Red Barchetta' ... 'Distant early warning' ... 'YYZ' (instrumental) ... 'Fly by night'... 'Time stand still'... 🤘🤘🔥🔥 Other Rush songs that have been overlooked - 'Dreamline' ... 'The Pass' ... 'Mystic rhythms'... 'Circumstances' ... 'Animate' ... 'Far cry'... 'A Passage to Bangkok' ... 'Headlong flight'... 🔥🔥🤘🤘 Rush's 20+ minute epic track '2112' is another worth checking out. - Peter 😂

You speak of time capsules and musical evolution. Here's the cool thing about Rush - from 1974 to 2012 - these three musicians seriously embraced change. To quote a famous lyric (and well known French expression) from their 1979 song, Circumstances, "Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose."

Yes, the setting is the same as the video for "Tom Sawyer." They filmed three videos at Le Studio, the aforementioned Tom Sawyer and, finally, "Vital Signs". All from the 1981 album Moving Pictures.

Wonderful, vibrant reaction. Fantastic energy You presented a dangerous request. You asked Rush fans to limit their choices to only five songs. DO YOU KNOW HOW DIFFICULT THAT IS?!? Ok. Ok. Ok! I'll try. Many will recommend the most popular. I'm going to try and explore the span of their discography. 2112 - If there was one "song" that encapsulate Rush's approach to music and their desire to be themselves, this is it. Plus, as a "Theatre Kid", you may love the way this plays out as a grand example of the Rock Opera. La Villa Strangiato - No Rush list is complete without one of their instrumentals. This is my favorite in highlighting Alex Lifeson's skill and range. The Pass - Rush fans love how Neil always had some message in his lyrics. Many will recommend Subdivisions, but The Pass has a tempo and rhythm that accompany lyrics for anyone that has dealt with dark period in their life Animate - This song always surprised me in how it's a love song but with unconventional lyrics and strong rock tempo. The Garden - There is a bitter irony for Rush fans in the lyrics and how this is the last song off their last album. Every Rush fan I know wells up in tears.

The Spirit of Radio, Subdivisions, Marathon, Red Barchetta, La Villa Strangiato, A Farewell to Kings, Distant Early Warning, New World Man, Xanadu, Working Man, YYZ, The Big Money, Freewill....granted their most popular songs were from the 70s and early 80s but their later output shouldn't be ignored either like Stick It Out from 1993 or Caravan from their last studio album in 2012.

The lyrics & the technicality with which it was accomplished is brilliant. Take the chorus lyric: A: Living in the limelight, the universal dream A: For those who wish to seem A: Those who wish to be --- m- B: -ust put aside the alienation B: Get on with the fascination A: The real relation, the underlying theme The third line: "Those who wish to be-----must", continuing the A rhyme.

You want just *five* favourite Rush songs?! Gods above, woman! Okay ... First off I shall cheat and say "2112" ... yes .. all of it! Okay, just Side 1, if you insist :) Second, "Xanadu" Third, "Hemispheres" ... yes .. all of it! Okay, okay, just Side 1 then Fourth, "Red Barchetta" Fifth, "Countdown" Sixth ... ... ... okay, okay, okay ... I know you said five but I am already leaving out dozens of songs! "Madrigal". This song has a special, if heart breaking, meaning for me as I would have this on repeat in the car as I drove around unable to see through the tears after the death of my wife. Even now (I, of course, have it playing now), ten years on, it still gets those tear ducts working.
