OHMYGOD HEY!
Today, a brand new trailer was released for the upcoming film adaptation of WICKED, the 2003 Broadway and West End musical based on the novel by Gregory Maguire which originally starred Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth as Elphaba and Glinda.
The film, which is being directed by Jon M Chu and will star Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba, Ariana Grande as Glinda, Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero, Ethan Slater as Boq, Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible, Jeff Goldblum as The Wizard of Oz, Peter Dinklage as Doctor Dillamond and more, has just released a new extended look at the first of its two parts.
In this hot off the press new video, my stagey fiancé Aeron James and I are reacting to the trailer for the first time, sharing our initial thoughts and then analysing every single frame of the trailer to find out exactly what this tells us!

I love that they released this film for L. Frank Baum’s birthday! As an Oz nerd, I really love that they decided to celebrate the author who made the Wicked movie possible in this way.

Part of the reason why the musical is being adapted into two separate films is because Jon was unwilling to cut any songs because he knew that the fan base would come after him.

In the novel Wicked fire IS involved. She lights her broom while threatening Dorothy's life and a piece of the straw flutters off and sets her on fire. There's also going to be a baby Nessarose in that flashback scene -- I remember a casting notice going around through disability groups a while ago, looking for a four-year-old girl who uses a wheelchair to play that role. (I'm not sure if they ended up casting a disabled kid -- finding someone in the right age range, with acting ability, who looks enough like Marissa Bode, is a lot of very specific things to ask for -- but I know they at least tried, which I appreciate.)

There are so many ‘nods’ to Frank L Baum’s original Oz books or the fabulous 1939 Wizard of Oz film with Judy Garland. The silhouette of the hand is a nod to Margaret Hamilton’s interpretation of the Wicked Witch of the West - there is a very famous PR photo where she has both hands out in front of her in this position and her shadow is cast behind her on the wall. The book the hand is displayed on in the trailer is a sorcery book on weather! The invitation to the Emerald City has been signed using the full title ‘The Wonderful Wizard of Oz’ - the title of the very first book and not just ‘The Wizard of Oz’ which is the name used when speaking about him. The wizard head is giving a nod to the 1939 film and the original drawing from the Baum novel. The Grimmerie comes to life as she casts the levitation spell - its feathers emerging from the pages! In the attic, you’ll see boxes/wooden crates in the background - look closely, on these crates it has the wizard’s real name, Oscar Diggs, and also where he is from in the real world ‘Omaha, Nebraska’ (Wizard’s full full name… Oscar Zoroaster Phadrig Isaac Norman Henkle Emmannuel Ambroise Diggs) A few of the long shots you can see faint rainbows in the sky - surely a nod to the classic Over the Rainbow. And as you pointed out - she puts her class mates to sleep using poppies - reference to the 1939 film. And of course what greater acknowledgement could you give to the man who made anything and everything Oz related possible - the creator of Oz Frank L Baum but by releasing the new trailer on his birthday!

The biggest thing I'm nervous about is the confusion the trailers are giving to this being one movie for those who don't know they're two. Not only are they showing scenes that are normally in Act 2 in both the teaser and the trailer, but they haven't put "Part 1" in the title of any of the advertising. I feel like a lot of people who are casual viewers are going to be annoyed by that and maybe turned off from seeing part 2. Otherwise, cinematically its stunning and looks like the big movie spectacle I wanted it to be 20 years ago when I was a teen seeing the show for the first time

The musical is definitely a much cleaner, tighter story than the book! It's still worth reading for research... I'm loving that the stage dialogue is there and expanded rather than rewritten. I can not wait for the screenshots to get a better look at the costumes! Ozdust feels quite 1920s/1930s - not just costumey flappers, but real fashion from the time. I wonder if they're leaning into the 1930s as a reference to the original film? I love the aesthetic! Gotta agree, the bunting is excessive over the architecture. While I adore the blue bubble dress onstage (although trying to replicate it defeated me!) I think they were right to go with pink for the film, referencing such an iconic moment from the original film. The Grimmerie is a pop-up book?! :D I'm so optimistic about this! They're certainly putting in the effort to do the musical justice!

If you pause the original teaser, not this trailer, at 0:44 you see Elphaba leap across the gap towards the other window, presumably to break it and fly out. That’s my take on it anyway. I’m very pleased with what I have seen so far for the Wicked films. Cynthia and Ariana seem to have fantastic chemistry. Cinematography wise, it looks gorgeous and the snippets of the songs are giving me chills. I’m pumped and I am totally buying tickets for myself and my mom for opening night. I agree that Madam Morrible is THE villain of the story, but in my humble opinion, I don’t feel that comes across as strongly in the musical as it does in the novel. In fact, I feel that she is a much more compelling villain in the book. I am excited to see what the fabulous Michelle Yeoh does with this character and hope they gave her a lot of great material to sink her teeth into. I am hoping that the fans of the musical will leave room for this film to be an adaptation and not simply a play by play of the musical on screen. As for the novel, I do think there is material there that could be pulled to flesh out the characters and the relationships between them. One of my favorite moments of the admittedly bleak and bizarre novel is a group scene with Elpheba, Glinda, Boq, Fieryo, Nessa, and a few other friends bonding at a pub after a funeral and they hear Elpheba sing for the first time. I feel that giving Elpheba a real friend group in the early part of the story makes what happens later all the more heartbreaking.

What I've noticed is that a lot of the marketing leaves out the fact that this is a 2 part movie. The end of the trailer just says "Wicked". I wonder if they're deliberately hiding the fact that its a two parter to get more butts in seats, and what the reaction of the general public will be after "to be continued" pops up on the screen when they were maybe expecting a full movie. Fans of the show will know this, but the casual moviegoer who've just seen a trailer before another movie or a poster in a cinema will have no clue.

@@andylucas5770 I mean, maybe? I've been at movies where people in the theater got angry at the "to be continued" card on screen because they didn't know that was coming (Across the Spider-Verse) while they really enjoyed the movie up until that point. They were expecting a complete story, and I feel its a valid point to be annoyed after finding out you're not getting that and will have to pay again next year. It seems like a "trick", to get more people to see it. Then again, I get the studios as well for not making it clear, because a lot of people would probably also not see it, or wait for streaming if they knew it was "just" a part one. I'll be there opening day though :)

I don't know. I keep thinking that serials and cliffhangers have been a part of movies from the beginning. And it is a tried and true "trick". (What are "franchises" like Star Wars and Indiana Jones and Lord of the Rings, but serials that might just as well have part 1 and part 2 ad infinitum attached to them? [LOTR does this] In a way, the promotion for Wicked is more straightforward and honest and treats its audiences like grown ups with money.) Audiences were not usually told that what they were paying for and watching would be in multiple parts. The musical theater audience, the Wicked Fans, generic theater fans, John M. Cho movie director fans, Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande fans, fans of the book and fans of the stage adaptation - this is enough to sustain the box office. And how will the release be handled? Will part 1 go to streaming before part 2 goes to the big screen? There are pros and cons here. Having part 1 on streaming services could act as a very long ad for part 2 and bring in more people who are not theater fans, musical theater fans or book fans but who, after seeing the stream of part 1, will want to see the glamor of the thing on the big screen.

You mentioned pop princess popular.... I really hope they don't change the soundtrack. Like I get that Glinda is more of the "commercial" look and she does have a poppy style to her, but I don't want a watered down musical theater track that attempts to be poppy which inevitably fails to meet expectations. I want Popular! I don't know how everyone else feels, but I'll be disappointed if that's the case. This is the reason I listen to musical theater to get away from all the pop music. I do like still, but just not in this case....

I’m definitely excited to see the story developed further between the songs (I think the book of the stage show is its only weaker element tbh) - but part of me also feels that there’s a happy medium to be found here. Conciseness is a skill when it comes to screenwriting. I’m predicting the fans and film critics will be divided over it…

Just playing devils advocate here how is it toxic to say that you think two actresses may be too old for a role? Isn’t that just a critique of the production. I personally don’t have an issue with them playing the characters, but I’m just a bit surprised that a professional theatre critic would consider an opinion as toxic.

I think because I see it extended towards women far more often than men (as well as commentary on their size and appearance) - they both play these characters over a number of years on screen, a certain amount of suspension of disbelief may be necessary. Performances are far more than the perceived age of the actors, and I long for viewers to care as much about the depth of their acting.

So originally I was super excited about the casting, but then with the first trailer I realised Bailey and Erivo look too old for the 1st part. Not sure if they look young enough to play uni students... Also odd thing I noticed is that Erivo's face isn't as contoured as it normally would be in a stage production? I think it's to make her look younger and then in the second part they'll make her make up more glam to show passage of time

I absolutely loathsome refuse to see these so-called movies at all. First, the unmitigated greed of Stephen Schwartz to split this into two lousy movies offends me (and I have a story about him that turned off the entire Broadway community in 1973-but I'll get to that soon). I was forced to see the original Wicked 1.5 times, and I hated it. (I did love the original Wicked book though). I can't imagine seeing it as a movie. Ugh. But I find Schwartz know or remember this horrible human being when he was young. The night Pippin opened at the Imperial Theatre, Schwartz handed out notes to the entire cast: "You've ruined my show. I hope you fail." Fosse was told about this and immediately banned him from the Imperial for life (or the run of the show). My stage management professor (who was a Broadway PSM) told us this, and the community was aghast, to say the least. Years later, Schwartz himself confirmed its veracity, as did a member of that original cast. So no, I'm not the least bit excited to see this POS and his two-part movie. I'm actively NOT ever going to any part of Wicked. I refuse to give him a dime. To misquote Schwartz, I hope it fails (and I never say that about any other show).
