The young carers coping in lockdown

For hundreds of thousands of young carers in the UK, the pandemic has been especially hard. Many have been dealing with increased caring responsibilities during lockdown, juggling that with home-schooling and the absence of the usual support networks. We spoke to some young carers about their life during the pandemic.

Very mature. Mature than most others of the population. Mature than our politicians. Praise should really be given where needed.

Not just praise, but financial, moral and physical support. But just like clap for carers/nurses, they won't be given that.

@@TomNook. This only very general, but it does not not do any harm for children to learn hard self-sacrifice for others, the younger the better.

These children are incredible. Katie says she feels like she has to be 23 instead of a child, but I am 23 and doubt I could deal with the amount of responsibility she does. I hope things can get better for everyone in these kinds of situations as soon as possible

That was a difficult watch, but thanks Channel 4. Shed a tear or two, and I'm nearly double 23. Katie, Adam and Abbey - you're amazing. Wise beyond their years and it shouldn't have to be that way. It's been hard enough being just a kid the last year, let alone having to step up and care for family on top. Here's hoping you get the help you need and can go back to being just a kid again.

I really don't understand how a child is left to look after a mother who can't look after her daughter, it makes no sense. There really should be a tax payers funded programme that hire people to come in daily and take the load of this child. I really don't see the point in voting and the Gov't if Children are left to be carers and Marcus Rashford has to call the PM to get children fed. What seriously is Boris's point? I know we should have voted Corbyn, I know it.

I was a young carer for 13 years (I am 13 years old) but I am not anymore because I cannot live with my brother who I looked after and my mum. I missed over half of year eight which means I am failing now and to be honest things would be alit diff if we had Corbyn as PM. I wish I was old enough to vote then I could finally have a say on what goes on in my life😞😣

As someone that was in a remarkably similar position to this girl at the same age I can sadly say that life is likely to get harder for her as time goes by… I hope she has support structures in her life, people she can talk to about how she’s coping, how she’s doing… For me, I was a carer for my sister and she passed and now I’m going to have to become a career for my mum. Sometimes things are just really sad and difficult and there’s nothing you can do but keep struggling on, hoping that you’ll keep afloat

To even consider such a ‘question’ you have to wonder if she is simply attention seeking). Consider Veroandi Soldusty’s very considered and intelligent response to your comment as an example.
