Great work here, Brandon! Appreciate you raising awareness of options out of the normal consumer consideration set. Your "Which One Should You Get" section is spot on. The Focals seem like a great option for those whose main use case is listening. For my use case (snobby travel and business; i.e., ANC and voice calls for travel and business, sound quality for snobby), you've given me more confidence to go with the XM5s.

Exceptional review as always! The song samples, mic samples, ANC samples and transparency samples are extremely helpful. Thank you for objectively providing us sample as well as your opinion! This is the only video that provides actual samples of Focal Bathys. Keep up the excellent reviews!

I've never seen such a detailed review before. You deserve more reach. Go ahead, man!

I got the Bose NC700s after recommendations from friends who operate heavy equipment like me. The Bose are very impressive making an open cab piece of equipment with a very loud, sorta muffled, exhaust sound almost like a brand new, pressurized, sealed cab. I have noticed sometimes I get a sharp "pop" whenever the mic is facing the exhaust of said machine, maybe the anc mics are overwhelmed a little bit. Surprisingly, they do very well when using an impact wrench inside a small enclosed space. Not sure why they are not overwhelmed when the noise is much, much harsher. And for that, I think the sound quality is good enough; too much going on to really be able to focus on the sound anyway. Only downside I found so far is that they slide off my head whenever I look down for more than a minute, especially moving around on my hands and knees or stomach. They need more grip or clamping force for me. Eventually I would like to get something like the Focals for personal time, in quieter environments of course

Thank you so much for doing all of these in-depth reviews, especially the song example portions. It's interesting to see how my headphone preference changes depending on the song type. I noticed that for the more electronic heavy and rock songs I preferred the Sony xm5s, while for the more soulful/funky songs I preferred how balanced the Focals are. Excellent video as always! EDIT: The different song samples also made me feel more confident in choosing Sony for my Christmas present since I tend to listen to a lot of bass-heavy rock genres (metal, goth, darkwave, etc.)

Not sure why but, if only based on the comparison between the original audio and the headphones, the Focal sounds off, like its treble is hollow. And I’m not even comparing it to the other headphones, just with the original track. It can’t be because of the headphones that I’m using, because otherwise, the original track would sound weird as well.

Well done! I have been binge-watching wireless ANC headphone video's and this is far and away the best I have found! The rotation thru the different models while the same song or ANC is playing really gave me the info I needed. Love the Focal Bathys, but at the price point will likely get the Sony MX5's. I already have the Sony MX3 earbuds and they continue to perform flawlessly. I love comprehensive testing and you obviously are an excellent audio engineer, thank you for your expertise!

Found you recently and already a big fan of your data driven approach and a lot of insightful deep-dives. Your reviews clearly showed my why I will take XM5 over XM4 (better build quality imo) and Bose QC45 (often praised for better audio which is completely not true!). I think at the moment only Focal Bathys are significantly better at reproducing audio, however they are also 3 times more expensive (Sony's are often on sale) and are inferior at work and travel situations. Maybe Momentum 4 could be better at audio at the same price point and it would be cool if you could test them. But yeah, thank you for convincing me to go for Sony's. BTW, nice phone over there =) Sony Xperia Pro-i

I've missed the ANC test when somebody is talking to you directly as you did in the AirPods pro comparison (in the future). I bought a sony xm5 and was a bit disappointed. I needed that specifically to fix my problem with continued speaking on the kitchen, and without music there are almost no changes (speak to chat disabled) in noise canceling. But your reviews are awesome, now I compare original track with Sony xm5 and they are the same (you a bit bassy). So people, representations are accurate. Waiting for comparison sony earbuds with airpods pro so badly.

Obviously if you are streaming with Qobuz or TIdal or you have FLAC files on your phone nothing beats the Focal having a built-in DAC with 24Bit/192khz in DAC mode. Finally that are two headphones in one: excellent USB wired mode with DAC or Bluetooth. But at the end it depends on the recording quality itself. I would rather to consider a comparison between Focal Bathys, B&O H95 and B&W PX8. The way this review has been worked through is one of the best I have seen.

Hey, big fan here! Would be really interested to hear your thoughts about the Bose QC Ultra and the B&W PX8. And a video about comparing bluetooth codecs (LDAC, aptx lossless, aac..) would be really interesting. Noone really seems to know if it's voodoo or actually makes a difference.

I am not an audiophile but appreciate music. The more reviews I listen to the more confused I get. There are difference in all and they are reviewed using different weight by different people. I will say I am definitely leaning toward the Focal.

Hi, this is the 3rd comparison of your I watched and first of all thanks you for the awesome work! I listened this using my airpods pro, and imho when it comes to sound the focal are really in a league of their own, and the airpods max are completely outplayed. My issue would be that the focal are really more than the double of the price of the sony which honestly makes them hard to be a go for. I wonder how better can you equalise the sony because that low end focus, whilst still rich at the mid end can be overwhelming. I listen to a lot of metal, prog rock, fusion jazz, and some more alternative pop stuff as well as hip hop and classical.. well i basically listen to all kind of music so I’m very inclined to go for the sony. I loved the senheiser sound of another comparison you made, but the anc perfomance was just horrible. Thanks again

I had the original 710N with the flip paddle control thing and finally wore them out. Went with the newer USB-C model and the sound quality was so much better on the older set. I really hope the xm5 doesn't sound anything like the newer gen 710N's

First, i thank you for your great reviews. Most complete out there, great communication skills, and they helped me decide which ones to buy a month ago, the Sony Xm5. Got a promotion for 299€ and went for it, right before a 15h plane holliday trip to Thailand where the stellar ANC helped a lot ahahah. Even though i already have them now, i couldnt help to check this video popping in my youtube list, since im very impressed with the Focal, from other reviews, and wanted to see them compared to the Sony. My 2 winners here, sound wise, are the Focal and the Sony close behind. Im surprised how close the Sony are to the generally acclaimed Focal Bathys. But listening to your personal thoughts maybe in real life testing the Focal are more firmly ahead? Considering ANC, mic and call quality, eq app, lightweight, confort and price ....the Sony are still the overall winner for me. One thing i really love in the Sony XM5 versus the previous generations and the other contestants today (except the Focal) is the tight and concise sound. All the others have too much distortion in the mids and highs, creating the idea of a more bright and spatial audio... and i find that quite fatiguing honestly after a while. If you still want a more bright signature, the Sony app even has a prebult bright signature that gives you high and mids, without the distortion. Im lucky enough to test headphones in some shops around me since they expose them for real life tests and the generational bump in sound quality (and tightness) in the XM5 vs the XM4/Bose and others was enough to make a decision after few seconds of listening! They are really that good. Unfortunately not easy to find the Focal Bathys for real life testing but im definitely curious about them and if they get into a promotion maybe ill go for it. Keep up the great work.

Fantastic job on this review. WoW the amount of work to get US to review those headphones with you. My choice would definitely be the Focal Bathys. Their overall soundstage was way above the competition. Sony is my 2nd favourite. As for the rest, they sound too shallow and lack mid-range.

Came back here to watch this comparison again and wanting to hear it on my Timeless AE IEM through BTR7 and man I can hear artifact noise clearly on the XM5 in the ANC and Transparency mode but never on others, in the song tests, still that same muddy bass that has some tweak to it since XM1 but only some bits cleaner.

Hey This is Tech Today just a quick question, what sound setting are the xm5's on? Is it the normal settings? If it is then I find that the normal settings of the xm5s actually sound bad but putting them on other modes such as "exciting" makes them sound so much better

Awesome. Any chance you add the Stax S3 cans in the comparison video with the Momentum 4? I know the S3 lacks ANC, but many seem to love the sound of their planar drivers.

@@tytownsend8219 I’ve had 1 hiccup so far. That’s saying a lot because I use mine for up to 9 hrs at work every day for the last month. I don’t remember the last time I had to manually pair or turn them on or off. It’s almost like they’re maintenance free wired cans. The battery lives up to the hype. The sound is even better. Just buy them if you can. I don’t regret buying them one bit. Best headphones I’ve bought to date, and I have around a dozen pairs for various uses.

Thank you for your excellent, objective review. I’m weighing between the B&W PX8 and the Bathys. Recently started looking at the Beoplay H95. Your presentation of the various sound scenarios have helped. Q: if I EQ the Bathys are those settings uploaded to the headphones or do the settings only work while running music through the app?

Great overview! I recently purchased the Focal Bathys. I am a Sony fan, and especially like their 1000XM line. I have the 1, 2 and 4s. I didn’t like the 5s in store. The Bathys is significantly better, in line with their increased cost - although the ANC is inferior. They’re the first Bluetooth ANC headphones that really provide a hifi listening experience, with all the modern conveniences of recent years. PS: I also tried the B&W PX8 in store, which are the Bathys’ natural competitor. Beautifully made, comfortable. But I preferred the more mid-focused and detailed nature of the Bathys. Very happy! Ps2: replace the stock 3.5 cable of the Bathys. I got a Furutech ADL iHP-35 and they make a HUGE difference!

Great review thank you! I am listening with the Bose QC45 I want a new pair with better NC and I'm stuck between the Bose 700 and the Sony WH-1000xm5 after this video I am now leaning towards the Sony

I bought Sony MX5 by the end of September, and I'm truly happy with them. Very satisfied. As a normal user, who listens alot of music while walking around the streets, video gaming here 'n there and movies especially, I do love them. Haven't tried the rest, I do believe there can be far better than MX5's but this is my honest opinion. Cheers! 🍻🍻

Lovely review, but I feel like with the exception of Hannah's beautiful composition and the acoustic guitar, all the other song samples are very electronic oriented. Would love to hear some comparisons with actual rock music.

Best transparancy and comfort - bose ( voice sounds most natural), for acoustic songs- bose 700 , for rest xm5, unless used in wired mode where focal sounds better. Considering bose 700s can be bought for 140 to 170 barely used i think it brings arguably best bang for the buck , but if cash isn't an issue then sony xm5 i feel like would be most suitable for me, but that could change with trying to use them for a while, will have to try to buy them at some point, currently have 2 bose 700s , i love them, for next pairs im considering sony due to loud microphones.

Apple has eq modes in their native system that you can choose different genres or even a loud setting.

I have to say, that I also own every four headphones and I go with you, with your decision that the "Focal Bathys" are my personal favourit. On the second place I also but the XM5. I do use them for electronic music, when I wish that my ears feel the punch of the drum and the power of the basslines. But the stage isn't as big and good sounding, like the Bathys gave to me. On the third place I will set the Apple Airpods Max, but they aren't as good as the other two. In my opion they sound, as you are sitting on the stage in the middle of the orchestra ... The Bose NC700 I gave to my Father, who won't hear any difference between all four headpones. The sound of them was the worst of all four and the only good thing was the ANC-Mode. But I use now for the moments I wish to use ANC the XM5s, because the ANC an them is outstanding.

PLEASE compare high end wireless ANC headphones vs mainstream audiophile wired headphones. Has the quality/performance gap (if any) narrowed by now? Would like to know if owning just one Bose or Sony is enough for most listeners, rather than owing one ANC pair for travelling and another "audiophile" pair for room listening.

I first bought the sonyXM5’s. Which would automatically cut off (like from a cough) the sound requiring a double tap to restart the music. This was a relentless problem so I returned them only to experience the same problem again with the second set…. I finally upgraded to the AirPod’s MAX and never had the issue again….

I think I'm jumping from Bose QC 35 II to Focals. The interesting thing is, the Focal sound was the best for me, and the second best was the original sound

Great review, Brandon. I have subscribed based on this one video - very complete. I'm currently demoing the Focals Bathys from my local dealer. Not a fan of the Focal wired sound, more of a fan of Planar drivers. However the Bathys do dig out the detail and bass is very well control and articulate, I do find the treble can be a little too forward and harsh on some tracks - so interesting that you say that the treble could be increased via the Naim/Focal app to make it more airy (would that be even harsher to my ears). Sony are way too bass heavy, when I tried them on at a retail store here in the UK they were an instant turn off for me, despite the hype at the time. I had been impressed by Bose, but maybe the model you have here is not the best Bose model, it seemed very tinny. Mind you, listening through headphones fo each of the tests, isn't necessarily accurate. I lisened to your tests through Oppo PM-3s but these are warm sounding and probably colour the tests anyway. Only issue I have with the Focals is the price and the fact that as I have an iPhone, so have to fiddle around with OTG cables on my iPhone if I want to use the DAC mode. Incidenatally I understand that the iPhone 15 doesn't need OTG as it has an integrated USB-C jack which charges and sends and receives signals. Cheers.
