In the 1950s, The Landseaire was the ultimate go-anywhere adventure machine. Based on a sturdy WWII-era PBY Catalina flying boat and fitted with beds, bathrooms, kitchens and even deployable boats, they were a long-range home in the sky like no other. But what happened? Where did they go and for one family, how did it all end so tragically?

My grandfather was that hero. The plane only landed in that area due to an engine issue. My uncle was working on the engine when the shooting started. The whole group was held hostage presumed to be spies. There is quite a bit more to the story, for instance, my grandfather was not the only one shot during that attack. Also, one night while being held, they were awaken in the middle of the night, driven out in a truck to an isolated area, and unloaded by a group of men with rifles. Thankfully, another vehicle showed up in the nick of time with someone appearing important, as my mother described (she is the teenaged girl in some of the photos), and they were loaded up again and taken back to the camp.

Great one, Calum. Last PBY I saw was the one that killed my mayor, 24 years ago. I heard about a failed water landing on the radio and went down to watch it on the way home, not knowing at the time that the mayor of Southampton had been killed. The Millennium Falcon was a cargo vessel first. Not only did it have an internal storage room but its forward facing prongs would latch on to cargo barges for heavier loads. Lando converted the Falcon into his personal yacht, sacrificing some storage compartments for an expanded captain’s quarters and a walk-in closet and having a luxury escape pod fitted into the cargo prongs. Also, Corellian starships, no matter what size and class, are known for their rugged reliability and modular design for personal customization.

Just to point one little thing out... the step in the hull is specifically designed to make takeoff easier. This is why it is a staple of hull design in flying boats.

Excellent video on a Catalina development I had no idea existed. We still have a flying PBY-5 here in New Zealand, based at Ardmore, south of Auckland. Lovely old girl, I have been up in her a couple of times. The hull of a PBY which was 'parts donor' for her ended up down at Classic Flyers in Tauranga, and over a decade ago I was one of the volunteers who dissembled the rear-most part of the fuselage to create an indoor exhibit ... it was quite surreal drilling out all those 1/8" rivets (with the perished remains of rubberised canvas sealing the joints between plates) and thinking this was a Real Catalina I was working on, not the Airfix kit of one which as a kid I had thought was the nearest I would ever get to the real thing.

I think one of these was at a local airport when I was very young. Mid 70s to early 80s. It was covered and in disrepair. I remember being amazed at it's size and shape but being too young to really appreciate it importance. It sold at some point and disappeared. No idea where it went. I remember people that knew about it saying a local guy owned it and travelled the world in it. They said it had a washer and dryer and said it was basically a flying RV. I'll ask around and see what I can find.

Dude, the Wasp radial engines are NOT 4 cylinder, they have 14 cylinders. Cessna's and tiny planes are 4 cylinder. It didn't have an "AM/FM transmitter" It was a simple radio RECEIVER. The Lucite dome was 1000 pounds about $2600 dollars at the time !

Hey, great video! First heard about the Catalina from War Thunder, and being a bit outdoorsy myself I had the thoughts of turning it into an air camper, then a few years later I find out that absolutely happened (thanks to this video) Being in Arizona, the Pima air and space museum is a wonderful trip, as well as Kartchner Caverns, Tombstone (very much a tourist trap but still fun), colossal cave and a few others are very much worth the visit if you come back! (By the way, Tucson is pronounced too-saan)

If you want to look into more amazing live aboard flying boat houses Calum, you might want to look into Martin and osa Johnson’s ‘spirit of africa’, a story in a time when africa was still vastly unexplored. Their book is amazing. I’m pretty sure the Disney movie ‘up’ took a lot of inspiration from what they did with their sikorsky.

Never got to see a PBY like this, but as a kid me and my dad passed by a grumman goose moored on a small lake behind a beach house. My dad pulled over and me and him walked over and met the family who owned it. They gave me the full tour. Later on id play uncharted and it was an instant realization that it was the exact flying boat i had been in as a kid. Thanks for another great video
