@@JoaoVitor-ys6ps "They did not make public presentations to the world..." The Aero Club de France were well informed about the Wrights beginning in 1900 when Wilbur Wright began corresponding with founding member Octave Chanute. Impressed with the Wrights' progress, Chanute traveled to the United States to visit them at Kitty Hawk in 1901, 1902, and at Dayton, Ohio in 1903. After his 1903 visit, Octave Chanute delivered a lecture to the Aero Club de France in which he described the Wrights' experiments with gliders and their plans to fly a powered aircraft. Present at Octave Chanute's 1903 lecture was a French artillery captain named Ferdinand Ferber who likewise traveled to the United States and visited the Wrights at Huffman Prairie in Dayton, Ohio. After meeting the Wrights, Ferdinand Ferber declared himself a "disciple of Wright" and in 1904 built a copy of a Wright-style glider, describing it as a "type du Wright." Relying on information gained during these and other visits to the Wrights, the December 1905 and January 1906 editions of L'Aerophile (the official journal of the Aero Club de France) confirmed the Wrights' successful flight of a powered heavier-than-air airplane.

A very 'Disney' version of history. Lets talk about other credible claims to first flight. Lets also consider that the definition of 'sustained, controlled flight' was created after they flew and tailored for what they did. How about their unrelenting pursuit of patent claims against every aviator in the US and Europe, essentially putting a freeze on American aviation development to the extent that come WWI there was not a single American designed airplane suitable for combat, thus their reliance on British DH designs. How about the fact that the family blamed Glenn Curtis for Wilbur's death and that Orville died blaming his sister Katherine for abandoning him. And then there is the agreement with the Smithsonian that the institution never support, nor even investigate other claims to first flight as a condition of displaying the Wright Flyer.

The Smithsonian is perfectly free to investigate whatever it wants. The condition is simply that they relinquish ownership of the Kitty Hawk airplane. And considering what the Smithsonian had done to the Wrights with their persistent denials and fabrications, it was absolutely GENEROUS of Orv to sell them his plane for a single dollar. You also fault the brothers for enforcing their patent. I’m going to guess you’ve never heavily invested any of your own time or money into any important invention.

As for other credible claims, there is overwhelming evidence that it was Wilbur & Orville who were the ones who invented the first successful airplane. Everyone who has studied the matter is well aware of their copious documentation of their accomplishments. The only people who argue that the Wright Brothers were not first are in one of two categories: - Utter denial of clear facts, or - Grossly distorted belief on what constitutes successful flight. So those who have looked into this thoroughly are quite clear that Dec 17th, 1903 was a singular day in the history of human accomplishment. But somehow you have gotten convinced that the Wright Brothers have gotten more credit than they deserve. I’d be glad to look into any references you’d like to present.

@@cardinalRG I could start with an article about the wright brothers from the Scientific American Vol 95 april 1906 that states the scientific community did not recognized their flights, only small tabloids an no pictures whatsoever. There was a statue in paris called saint-cloud made of bronze as of memory dedicated to the first person who took of on an airplane. In 1908, when the Wright brothers went public, they used an engine bought in France that had 50hp. there was never a public flight with their old 12hp engine that they claimmed as being able to fly 38km. Very odd how multiplying power did nothing to their need of a launcher. And it goes on.

@@gabrieldegois8687 -- _”Very odd how multiplying power did nothing to their need of a launcher.”_ By “launcher” I assume that you refer to the catapult that the Wrights sometimes used after 1903. The Wrights never needed to use a catapult, but it was their preferred method of takeoff. It allowed takeoff from rough surfaces and confined areas, such as Huffman Prairie where the 14bis itself likely couldn’t have operated. If you consider that a catapult allowed Wright aircraft take off in less than one-tenth the distance that Santos-Dumont required (60 feet versus 200 meters), then the Wrights’ preference for that method will make sense to you. Lastly, when exhibition rules and potential customers required it, Wright aircraft took off without a catapult with no problems.

So an F/A 18 doesn't fly because it uses a catapult? The catapult was used for 2 reasons. 1) the Wrights didn't have money to build an airstrip. A catapult and rail was a cheap way to get the plane airborne quickly and cheaply. 2) as stated, because even today it is best to take off into a wind, the reason airports have multiple runways, it was a quick way to reorient the direction of take off. Besides, in 1908 in France this question came up. The Wrights simply took off without the catapult on skids to show the plane was very capable of taking off without the catapult. This question was literally answered to everyone's satisfaction in 1908. On another note. Look at Santos Dumont's propellor in 1906. Look at the Wrights propellor from 1903 onward. Which one do you think was most efficient? The Wrights had developed the ability to control the airplane and fly in any direction. The 14bis had very little attitude control. It could go up and it could come down. There was a remarkable difference in technologies.
