The Wrecks of Setting 10 Foot Tires | Engels Coach Shop

The exasperating problems setting these Holt logging wheel tires. Dealing with 460 pound tires is much more difficult when things go wrong. With this second tire, things went wrong. Thanks for sharing in the adventure.

When the video switched to slow motion, I had two thoughts. Something broke or someone got hurt. 🤔 I didn't expect both, and I am so happy that your Minister Friend is ok. I am a retired Firefighter and have seen metal trusses cut loose when subjected to fire, so I am so glad no one else was hurt. It could have been so much worse. Things can happen so fast. Yeap, usually you don't see that. Since they have to go in hot, that's both an outcome and a function. You can paint the sides once the tire is set, but you can't paint that part, and rot could set... but because it goes in hot, it will char and char is a natural barrier. Bugs, rot... even fire, can be prevented with that method.

Well the bottom line is no one got seriously hurt and that is a good thing. that heavy and thick a metal under that much tension could very easily have broken a leg in a heart beat. and done some serious bone damage etc. I'm so glad that did not happen. Anyone who's done welding in their lives has had similia things happen. I had a trailer hitch I made once, out of scrap parts I scrounged up and it broke and like your case it was not my weld that broke but one on the part I rummaged up from a previous welder. Good part was the boat and trailer were on level ground when it broke so did not lose the boat and trailer. thanks for sharing. ECF

Well, yes it was a train wreck, after a fashion. Glad to hear the injury to the parson was relatively 'light' Speedy recovery sir. Thanks for showing the old weld up close, that was instructive. Great job with your daughter fixing the welds. It also shows what a great community you have and live with. cheers!

So glad no one was badly banged up. I cringed hard when the steel hit his foot.

In Eschede , 1998, a heat set steel tire on a high speed train broke. The train derailed, 101 people died. Until then all train wheels were steel tire heat set on steel wheel. Basically the same method that is used on wooden wheels.

I have been building stuff for as long as you have, and things ALWAYS go wrong eventually. Seems like you have had almost a golden time of it with so little bad juju. Keep up the good work!!

Kudos to you and the crew for overcoming adversity to get the job done, thankfully without injury to Micah’s toes, or any body damage to anyone else!

What a great eye opener, that tyre went off with a bang, but you got it done which was the goal along with all the assistance and support. A big job completed.

I'll bet there are not many videos of a contracting steel wagon wheel tyre weld failing like that! This video is a neat way of turning a negative into a positive. Good going!

Hi Dave, What an absolutely great testament to how you are regarded in your community of friends! Speaking as a retired metallurgical engineer, welds almost always fail from either; a severe undercut or lack-of-fusion. Looks like you had the latter in spades! All the best.

Another example of a group of people helping each other out. Great video of what can go wrong & how to rectify it. Stay safe & well.

Thank you for posting this video, I have been looking forward to every video since subscribing 4 years ago.. ironically it was the setting of borax tanker tyres that drew me to your channel. For many years I have wondered what would happen if a tyre could not be seated fully, but I had never considered a set tyre could contract so much to blow a weld. A truly enlightening video, and great kudos for letting us see the good and bad of the process. ps, the world needs more women like your daughter!
