The worst thing I've ever driven? The Aixam Mega Van thing

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

A throbbing twin-cylinder diesel producing roughly no power, a wasteful CVT drivetrain, flimsy plastic panels and SO MUCH NOISE! Surprisingly likeable, but this is HubNut. #aixam #microcar #awful

We use it to cart the newly born lambs and ewes to the lambing shed from the field. The only rubbish bit is the turning circle. It could have been so much better if it had a tighter turning circle!! I wonder how many here do know it is a VSP (Voiture Sans Permis) in France, shortened to just sans permis and you can drive one without a driving licence - sans permis ! There's two classes IIRC, 8.5hp absolutely no licence needed and a designed max speed of 30mph and the more usual 14.5hp needing a theory test only and IIRC 38/40mph max.

I’m sure we would enjoy a test of an Aixam city car, if you haven’t done one already. Congrats again on hitting 100000 subscribers.

That was absolutely hillarious! 🤣😂🤣😂😅 I love the styling of these (Has the same cute but attentive look as a jumping spider!) and never miss the opportunity to sit in one, when I see them at car or motorcycle fairs - almost impossiblre to fit inside, hahaha. It appears this have seen some extensive useage, despite being so awful, judging by the state of the interor - or maybe it was never cleaned - ever? Also - if I had to guess what era of car it was, just listening to the engine noise it makes, I would more likely guess 1904 than 2004... Proof that awful cars make for awfully good entertainment! More awfull cars, please!

I drove my Aixam Mega Van - professionally converted to a coffee van - for 6 years on and off...Fully loaded with a heavy coffee machine, 10kg coffee grinder, 2 x 23kg gas bottles, a fridge, 100 litres of water, 20 litres of milk, 5kg of coffee plus cups ,spoons, lids, biscuits and me and my daughter (trainee barista!). We drove 100s of miles around the South of England and the Mega acted like a real star. She never let me down but on hilly A Roads we would see the speedo go down to 11mph! We prayed it would keep on going to the top and it always did!...When i sold I gave a prospective buyer - a woman- a test drive and after five minutes she got out in shock! ....she was expecting it to be refined as a Vauxhall Astra van! Also I accidently drove it up to the axles in a flood - but after waiting 5 minutes she started and we went on to serve coffee...46mph was maximum downhill but it swayed around so much the prayer beads came out again!...I never tried it again. .... Don't want to ever repeat the marvel but the engine (Kybuto) was as strong as an ox and the van was a tiny marvel really! 😎

I had bought a french Ligier microcar; I returned it after a few days, it was so terrible it was unbelievable! The pedal positioning was totally to one side, the plastic roof caved in with water when in rained forming a puddle, the exhaust was under the driver seat so if you opened the windows the fumes would get in, and it would shake SO MUCH especially when idle that it felt like the engine was bolted straight to the chassis. I replaced it with an Italian Grecav from about the same year, and it was like stepping from a lawnmower to an actual car; no weird rattles, aluminium frame and panels, all the features worked and were reachable instead of being bolted wherever they happened to be when they chucked the parts inside a Ligier. Mind you, these things cost pretty much the same, which is an absurd amount, but at least the Grecav had some quality behind it and someone test-drove it before approving the production plans! I miss that little bean! They even made a pickup version...

I owned 2 Aixam cars with 500cc Kubota single cylinder industrial diesel engines. 80mpg under all conditions and top whack 70mph, the steering was a little hairy at that speed. Drove them from South West Scotland to Dublin and back several times. I actually have fond memories of them.

Safety first, you will hear it (or the driver) long before it reaches you. Personally I think it has a lot of err... character. It's sort of reminds me of my old (now long deceased) cat, he would hide and attack at every opportunity but I loved the poor old sod as nobody else would put up with him so he had many years more fun than he might not have had. It might be a terrible car but it is still on the road, it would be sad however bad this not to be able to see it. Just a thought, have you thought about trying another oddball such as a Renault Twizy? Thanks for sharing.

Used to have the facelifted electric version at work, a lot of things broke on that repeatedly to the point where we kept stock of 3 or 4 of each including electric motor mount and tow bar bracket. Went through a few chargers or charging system components and batteries too. At least that didn't vibrate like the 2 cylinder diesel which we had as a loan vehicle during one breakdown and the speed didn't matter to us as it was used on a site to move bins around with a little trailer.

The rear part reminds me of a fold-up trailer I once bought - which gradually fell apart through its own resonance. The seats remind me of my Isetta bubble car whose wire framed bench seat was atop the battery terminals. I am surprised that there isn't a drive wheel impinging directly on a tyre (just like a French moped I had).

I own one of these and am quite happy with it. It's a newer model though, from 2007. I have a compartment below the drivers seat. It doesn't sound as much, none of that banging and screeching, and no shaking. Instrument panel is more modern and better placed. Car doors are still ridiculous. I have it because I only have moped license (was quick and cheap) and because I don't have to pay road tolls, as expensive insurance and no need for annual inspection. It's perfect for summer during garden season.

This was a genuinely hilarious road test; I almost snorted my coffee when you did the "horn" test (it sorta grumbled apologetically, I noted)! It sounds something like TWC meets a 2-cylinder John Deere "Johnny Popper" when running, but TWC seems infinitely refined compared w/ this thing (and about twice as fast)...I also got a kick out of "General Engineering!" w/ the exclamation point, like, "Yes, believe it or not, we ARE engineers, even though we drive this!" The annoying buzzer reminds me of the one on my '78 Honda Civic; it had gotten to the point of sounding a staccato rhythm at freeway speeds, owing to the passenger door switch being misaligned--it also flashed the dome light in rhythm to the sound (Honda's attempt at a "Disco vehicle", I guess...) Yes, I'd need a good lie-down, after any amount of time in the "Mega-thing"!

A friend of mine only has a motorcycle license so for the past 45 years he has had mainly reliants but did delve into quadricycles. The ligier ambra made a smart car look huge and he also has had numerous aixams. The diesel one he had was the same engine as the truck and could manage around 50mph with a lot of determination and stupidity. The last one he had was an aixam crossline gtr Evo ( I'm being serious about that name!) With the petrol engine and fuel injection. Capable of around 70 flat out. That came fitted from the factory with remote locking, electric windows and rear parking sensors!

This came up on my playlist. The reason why the Kubota engine sounds so dreadful is because it has an uneven firing interval with a crankpin offset at 180c . That type of engine is in many Japanese motorbikes and is known as a Parallell twin. The more conventional 360c engine like flat twins has piston's that go up and down at the same time but with only one firing at a time making it much smoother and more pleasant to the ears like Elly and TWC

Back in the '90s there was a bit of a motor show in my town one year and amazingly Aixam was represented. I remember being intrigued at the idea of a car with a 400cc diesel engine (I think they may have even had a 300cc version as well). The only two brands I really remember from the event were Aixam and Volvo (there was an S60 which had the best seats of any car I'd ever sat in, from back in the days before Volvos became rebadged Fords). I think Aixam cars were being sold via an agricultural machinery business in Shropshire at the time.

Now, this is the Hubnut content I really love! Something hilariously bad tested with lots of humour. I lost it at "when you press the horn, the fuel gauge works" :D Fine French electronics... This is the spiritual successor to those old Piaggio Apes, or the IFA Multicar. Very small, very sparse, barebone runabouts for tight spaces. But I bet even the Italians or the East Germans put more effort in their versions than the baguette people... the same people who made the motorized tin can 2CV (no offense, I love them) in parallel with the space age high tech DS for decades. There must be something in their wine...
