I remember a few months ago when I crashed that I was wearing this thick metallica t-shirt. I shit you not, I slided for about 4 to 7 meters face down on asphalt road. I got 2nd degree burns in my hands and knees but my chest and abdomen were pristine, and the t-shirt held on perfectly, it ripped near my neck but that was all. I was really impressed with the quality of that t-shirt. All in all, it taught me that speeding's a really bad idea, and an even worse idea with no protective gear on.

You know bikers who don't wear any protective gear don't care right? I wore my gear all the time and would poke fun at the idiots who wore their sandals, shorts and a t-shirt. Gear is king. When a close friend of mine crashed his Gixxer 1000 at high speed 20 years ago, even though he wore a full suit, boots, gloves etc, he managed to walk away with a plate and screws in his ankle, a minor TBI, and the 6th vertebrae in his neck cracked. The bike didn't have anything on it that was salvageable. If he wasn't wearing his gear he, well, would be hear today. He told me about how someone who wasn't wearing gear was in the hospital the weekend he crashed and had road rash head to toe and how he would hear this person screaming everyday when the nurses were in changing the bandages.

Not going to read the comments to see if anyone has said this and even if, it’s worth repeating. It is critical that the riders helmet goes with him to the hospital on the ambulance. Most medics remember this, but things happen. If you’re on scene and the helmet gets taken off, keep up with it and make SURE it gets on that ambulance with the rider. Something else to consider is a quick clot kit available everywhere. I live in Southwest Louisiana and when I’m not at work , I’m fishing, hunting or riding my motorcycle. Never know when it may be needed.

They're Chipsealed. Tar, sharp gravel, tar. Nothing to smooth it out, just a cheap resurfacing procedure that takes about a week. I have actually been the first responder to a horrific car crash with 5 involved, 3 ejected from the vehicle at 80+ mph. This kind of info is spot on. The patient I was working on ended up dying. They had serious internal injuries. The EMS crew that showed up some half an hour after the wreck was extremely impressed with how I handled and delegated tasks. It made me feel better that they said there was nothing else I could do to save the man’s life. I had given him the best chance at survival through all my training.
