The WORST MOMENT of Buddy Ryan's CAREER | Rams @ Eagles (1989)

Спорт

Prior the 1989 NFC wild card round between the Los Angeles Rams and the Philadelphia Eagles, Eagles head coach Buddy Ryan had the genius idea to trash talk the Rams beforehand, talking about how they were looking forward to playing the San Francisco 49ers in the divisional round, and saying how they didn't fear Rams running back Greg Bell, even though he led the NFL in rushing touchdowns in each of the past two seasons. Safe to say, this move backfired in spectacular fashion

    My high school football head coach was one of Buddy Ryan’s most beloved players of all time … Eagles Middle Linebacker number 55 Mike Reichenbach! He was a phenomenal head coach to me and a better mentor. He took my senior year team to a 10-0 regular season , first sun regional playoff win in my high school’s history , and between my junior and senior seasons we finished with a 19-3 record with two of those Ls being in the state playoffs. Calvary Christian Academy in Philly. He had us achieve that record of with a roster of 32 kids & 9 of us my senior year (5 of the captains including me ) played both ways plus special teams ! Thanks for this video ! Mike got a lot of football knowledge from Buddy , but none of that arrogance lol. He was extremely humble. And would bench his best players if they ever celebrated a Td or attempted to show off or show up an opponent.

    The Mike Shanahan era Broncos had really good O-Lines. To the point that seemingly any RB with a pulse would rack up at least decent yardage. If memory serves, Terrel Davis was hurt one year and a guy named Mike Anderson became the lead RB and ended up making the Pro-bowl. But Anderson pretty much sunk into obscurity once Davis got healthy again.

    If you watch the game, it is a microcosm of the Buddy Ryan era. The defense, as great as it could be was susceptible to big plays and fundamental mistakes on occasion. And the offense was severely flawed against good teams that could contain Cunningham due to a mediocre run game and offensive line. Watching their offense in this game is sheer and utter frustration.

  • @bbigjohnson069

    @bbigjohnson069

    The Eagles offense was the type that the Rams could contain. The Rams were decent at stopping the run. The Eagles weren't a great running team. The Rams didn't have much of a pass rush other than Kevin Greene. But you didn't really want to pressure Cunningham so that he scrambles around, buys time until the coverage breaks down and he finds an open receiver for a big play or he just takes off running for big yardage. The Rams played a lot of nickel and dime coverage, sometimes only having only 2 d lineman on the field and kept Cunningham in the pocket. Back then he wasn't going to beat you as a drop back passer.

    Just to note, saying that Buddy Ryan hadn't won a playoff game in his entire tenure as Eagles coach to this point is a bit unfair as 1989 was only the 2nd time the Eagles had made the playoffs under Ryan and his 4th year as head coach to this point. The previous year's playoff game was the infamous Fog Bowl. And in case anyone is interested, the black tape over the wing on the helmet and the black armbands worn by staff was the QB coach Doug Scovil who had passed away from a heart attack earlier in the season. Also a side note, this would be Chris Carter's last game as an Eagle. Also, my dad was at this game as this was the time when he had season tickets.

    Ah ... I thought those black stripes were for Jerome Brown, but that must have been a few years later. The late-80s and early-90 were a stretch where the Eagles were good enough to make the playoffs but not good enough to advance far ... and being in the same division as the Giants, (now-)Commanders, and (90s) Cowboys built up one heck of an inferiority complex! Andy Reid changed everything, even if he never did actually win the SB with Philly ... and then a disciple of his finished the job. Speaking of which ... I call the Buddy Ryan era 'Donuts for Dinner' When I went to college and moved out of the house, I had one night where I decided that, since nobody was there to tell me no, I'd just eat a half-dozen donuts for dinner. It was fun, but it didn't give me what I needed, and it got old fast. All sizzle and no steak.

    They thought they were gonna beat the Rams then they would flyout to the Bay Area and practice up in the North Bay up in Marin College across the Golden Gate Bridge before facing my 49ers in the NFC Divsional Playoffs. But they overlooked the Rams and fell to them 21-7 at home. The following year in 1990 the Eagles would fall to their divisional rival in the first round to the Redskins as the Eagles outgain the Redskins 318-299 total yards on offense as the Eagles averaged 5.3 yards per carry to the Redskins 2.7 and would fall to the Redskins at home 20-6 as the Eagles would lose in their round of the playoffs for the third straight year and that Buddy Ryan was fired.

    I think you're embellishing Greg Bell's importance a bit here. I remember Jim Everett and the Rams PASSING game being the big deal in '88 and '89 after they traded Dickerson in '87.(Henry Ellard averaged almost 20 yards a catch in '89 and Flipper Anderson an eye-popping 26 yards per catch) Bell was a nice running back and all, but I don't recall anyone FEARING him.

    The Rams were definitely more of a passing team then. The reason no one remembers how that happened was because it started happening towards the end of '87 which was a strike year and the Rams going nowhere. Dickerson was gone mid season and the Rams were using the late Charles White who resurrected his career under Coach Robinsonhis former coach at USC and would win a rushing title benefited by playing games during the strike. Toward the end of the '87 season QB Jim Everett was starting to get a hold of Off. Coor. Ernie Zampese's "Air Coryell" passing attack and after a bad start, the players strike, the Dickerson trade all which left them in a 1-7 hole they'd won 5 in a row to get to 6-7. The offense was moving the ball on the ground and in the air. Everett would break his ankle in a loss to the Cowboys and the Rams finished 6-9. By the time '88 rolled around the Rams had drafted WRs Aaron Cox and "Flipper" Anderson, RB Robert Delpino, added sticky fingered TE Pete Holihan from San Diego who along with former Charger Buford McGee had familiarity with Zampese's offense. With Ellard and Brown, Bell and with a full training camp the transition more of a passing oriented team was there. In '87 the Rams were next to last in passing yards in '88 they ranked 3rd.

    Unlike a lot of Eagles fans I have fond memories of the Buddy era. Yes, they underachieved based on their talent, yes, their offense sucked considering they had a Pro Bowl playmaker at QB in prime Randall, and yes, they were infuriating as they were exciting. But I still enjoyed the 1986-90 teams. People have to remember, the Eagles were basically a joke franchise then. From 1961 to 1987 they only made the playoffs 4 times, all during the Vermeil era. Ryan brought an identity and an expectation of winning that we hadn't had much of.

    I would pay decent Patreon rates for a page with a different post every day, detailing what an overrated, loud-mouth moron Buddy Ryan was. "We are probably the only team in the league that can kick San Francisco's butt. We sacked their quarterback eight times and did everything we had to do." Everything, of course, but that minor detail of scoring more points. You did all of that, at home, and still lost by 10 points, allowing 38 and 28 in the fourth quarter. And what's really funny about that is that if there was one team that could have made that claim, it was actually the Rams. They actually beat the 49ers at Candlestick and really should have swept them.

    The Rams were outplayed most of the game at Candlestick but stayed close to win it at the end. At home in the MNF they were in control for 3+ quarters but melted in the 4th with 2 TOs and a big play sandwiched in between. I was at that game. It was painful. Many of the 49ers fans left early.

And while Buddy of course didn't know this at the time, they also won at Candlestick the following year. Outside of the Giants, they probably played the 49ers tougher than any other NFC team in that era. In general, Buddy was a complete one-hit wonder. The 46 defense had some success after 85. But the top offenses pretty much routinely found its holes.

    @@mfdixon1985 That was a strange series between those teams starting in the 70s up to about the time the Rams moved to St. Louis (shed a tear). The Rams were dominant most of the 70s and the 49ers were mediocre and often worse. A few times the 49ers managed to trip up the Rams it was always in LA. There were a few games that the Rams had no business winning (Jerry Rhome at QB?) and another where the 49ers offense moved all over the field and the Rams couldn't move anywhere. The Rams defense and special teams scored all the points. Home field disadvantage continued into the 80s. Rams knocked the 49ers from a playoff spot blocking a last 2nd FG @SF. The next year they blew a 35-17 4thQ lead at home. Most of the games were close. The few blowouts were done by the 49ers. The only game the 49ers lost in Anaheim in the 80s was the one or two? @@bbigjohnson069 Yeah. And from 1991-98, the 49ers swept the Rams every year, frequently winning big. I know that in 99, the Rams beating the 49ers was considered a really big moment for them.
