A note about young people and the lift hobby: In recent years more and more young people have become interested in the hobby of lifts. In the present day there is a large number of young lift enthusiasts participating in the hobby (which involves lift shafts and heavy machinery), and that is only the people I am aware of. Presumably there are many more young people who I am not aware of and/or have no online presence. The lift hobby is not a bad hobby however there are certain things about it where people need the knowledge to do it safely. The issue is that many of these young people are not reaching out to get advice on the hobby and many are doing it in secret. This is because of certain individuals preaching about how the hobby dangerous etc. It is easy for people like Mrmattandmrchay to shout about how the hobby is bad as a vein attempt to make himself sound like the voice of reason (when actually it just show that he has an unhealthy obsession with me and the hang-ups he has). However his preaching should not be seen as the safety minded person sees himself as, because his thoughtless actions are putting young people in danger as it makes them feel that they can not reach out to get help with the hobby. I find it very concerning that there are so many young people going in lift shafts who are doing it in secret. When doing the hobby in isolation it means that nobody can give you advice and information that is essential to them acquiring the knowledge to do the hobby safely. The reason why young lift enthusiasts are staying quiet is because they think that certain people will look badly on them for having the hobby. This is the wrong way to go about the hobby. Firstly just because the hobby has certain dangers does not make it a bad hobby as long as you are educating yourself on how to do it safely. Secondly, there will always be people that may take a disliking to you, and that is just a fact of life, you don't need to please everyone, however it is essential that you are safe, and to be safe means you need to be in a position where experienced people can reach out to you, especially if you are doing something unsafe without realizing it. Some of the dangers in lift shafts may not be obvious to you. People like Mrmattandmrchay saying that the hobby is bad does NOTHING to make the hobby safer for the people doing it, as he is only interested in wanting people to not do it, which ends up with young people telling him what he wants to hear, while doing the hobby in secret, which is the worst way to go about the hobby. As for myself, I want to work with the new young generation of lift enthusiasts to make sure they are doing the hobby safely and educate them on it, and working with young people can be very rewarding. I want to be there for young people to help out, educate them to reduce their risk of an accident, as well making great memories with this hobby, because just because there are certain risks does not make the hobby bad. It is no different to a mainstream hobby such as rock climbing and sailing.

I thoroughly agree with you on this, i have viewed his video aswell, he starts off with "Mr chay" who is 12 who had an accident with a lawn mower flicking a stone into his eye and starts trying to create a link to surfing an elevator, but here is the thing that is concerning, Mr Chay should have got the idea of what happens if 1000 RPM lawnmower blades nick a rock, like i was aware of this issue since 8 as my dad told me about it, and had wired up a switched socket and leftover flex just so I can turn it off to speak to him. I see no sense on his potentially dangerous message as a result of 2 things completely unrelated. I am 17 now, no learning difficulties and spreading the knowledge of lifts that you have shared over the years either through the hilarious lift reprogramming series I keep rewatching due to how informative/hilarious they are to your informative in depth videos, I even saved numerous people from dangerous information such as "the doors will open whilst it's moving" and the most infamous one "the lift car will plummet to the bottom" explaining every detail of the governor protection mechanisms and track brakes. These informative videos are the reason why as someone who intricately views mechanisms of everyday items, can back up what I say! I thank you for your service and knowledge of lifts and hope you are here for time to come. You have my permission to use this comment in your videos to further build on this.

is there some sort of area where there can be a closely knit community again? I appreciate this is something that used to be in place but it could be re-established with a different concept, like an advice hub? People ask questions, moderator can respond and can be decided whether question can be public. fully anonymised too would be nice. And some hard to get documents and software would be a bonus too :D

One of the first surfing videos I ever watched and was fascinated with was MrMatt “doing a bit of shaft bathing” where he’s on top of a lift as people are using it and it had this cool modified door-bell as a the ding. He deleted it when he decided to come out against all lift surfing as horrible and wrong. People will do what they want, you don’t have to turn into a tyrant and erase your past because of it.

It would be interesting to see how bad the inside of those motors look. I bet the bearings are near becoming seized LOL.

8:30 You can actually hear the bearings grinding on the surrounding metal which is really bad…

They look a lot like Torin and Imperial motors. Thankfully North America seems to have avoided these products so far since we have several high-quality generic parts suppliers here.

Imperial Electric is known as Kinetek De Sheng in Asia. So they have the similar design for the traction machine.

The IMEM lifts at Radisson have been installed in 2008 (The info plate below the displays says that) so the main lifts lasted maximum 15 years. What's the year when the main lifts have been replaced ? BTW the Confluence center in Lyon opened in 2011-2012 and the CNIM lifts there are just another rebranded IMEM lifts which are maximum 13-12 years old. And yes its very weird to see IMEM lifts with Xinda motors in a 17 floor building... Even the highest quality variant of the Gen2 which goes 1.6 m/s is a very underspec lift for 17 floors let alone an IMEM with Xinda motor... The bare minimum for this kind of building would be a 1.6 m/s Schindler Eurolift IMO

In America the closest you get to this probably having a hydraulic elevator where a traction would be more appropriate and then sometimes Schindler 3300s where they should be using 5500s

If Xinda’s “Otis Pm” gearless elevator machine was installed on an elevator in the USA, it would most likely be given a 🚩 by inspection, and be required that the elevator be taken out of service immediately, due to the motor not being up to code.

8:06 and 9:08 Honestly, despite the bearings being shot, it makes the 2 motors sound awesome, almost like some kind of old industrial motor or something. Yeah those motors are really cheap haha. If only these companies didn't cheap out so bad because they wanted quick money and actually put some pride into their products [IE: coming up with some new design not copying a copycat for the sake of getting some quick money]

No lift can be illegal to use, if it was illegal then it would be decommissioned.

I believe that crap drum looking motor is supposed to be some sort of combination of an Otis Gen2 footprint but using a permeant magnet internal motor like an EcoDisc. That's the only way I could see the design even working to be honest since a Gen2 machine has the discrete motor sticking out the side attaching to the drum. Chinese bearings are notoriously terrible though and that design looks ATROCIOUS to service. Not surprising that most of them were replaced in the Radisson since they probably wanted to replace the machines entirely once the bearings failed.

I think that most lifts are going to be replaced by these noisy knock-off lift motors built in China. Rather than having proper motors made in other countries.

Europe. Europe is the only place that makes proper stuff other than Japan and more so.

The lifts in the Radisson hotel are a far cry from what they would have installed in the 1980s and early 1990s in their East Asian resorts as many resorts in those countries such as in Bali-Indonesia that were built during that time had top of the range Mitsubishi lifts installed that are so good and well built to the point that they still have them running really well in a really good condition in the present day with no mods! I also stayed in the Neko resort in Bali in December of 2022 where they had original Mitsubishi lifts from 1988-1991 that were very fast and efficient for the four floors the resort had and apparently those lifts are also cheaper to maintain than if they replaced them with newer cheaper lifts so they have just decided to keep the original lifts for as long as possible which is really good as those lifts are a lot better and more reliable than what most lift companies make today! :)

I've used one of them lifts in a museum they are so shit, I did not trust it one bit

Its always funny to see crappy motors in scenic elevators.

I once went into a cheap Asian generic lift in Melbourne, it was so sketchy it wasn't funny
