The WORST dirt bike engine we have EVER seen... we had to use a SAW to open this WASTED YZ125!
Guys, we are stoked to announce our new company - MX Skill Shack! We are even more excited to teach you everything we know about building dirt bikes!
This wasted YZ125 engine was SO NASY inside & will make a killer comeback story! Not only for the sake of teaching- but we also can't wait for one of our of our lucky MX Skill Shack members to take this transformed Yamaha two stroke home when it's complete!
We certainly have never used a hacksaw to open an engine before 😂
As it sits. it is easily the worst dirt bike engine we have ever seen. No contest.... but not for long! We're ready to save this neglected turd, and show off how we do it with all of you.
Sign up to MX Skill Shack below, and be sure to connect with us on IG for sneak peeks of these builds as well as in-depth MX tech tips.
Welcome to The Shack!

Any machine shop with just a brideport mill and a lathe can bore the crankcase "crank bearing bore" and put in a sleeve made to fit. The sleeve will be thin, so don't make it a press fit into the cases, just a nice, slight interference fit. But make the bore of the sleeve about .0015" smaller than the new bearing diameter, which will make it all a .0015" press fit. The job can be done in 2-3 hours, (about $200.00), including making the sleeve and a new bearing pressed in, by a good machinist. Make sure you tell them that the bore has to be within .0001" of the location it is in now.

Brief comment on bearing torque plate JIS fasteners. Ive found that using allen drive is beneficial when reassembly of lower end is done. If its a 45 degreed fastener I aways go with the allen drive. Same for straight shoulder also if there is no space constraints. JIS style heads are prone to stripping and allen style gives way more support and positive engagement when its time to send it home. Good content fellas. Keep it coming.

@@mxrevival You're welcome. Best of luck with the Yamaha. It's definitely a roach in need of work. Being a vet builder/rider from the mid 80's it saddening to see these vintage two strokes neglected and left to rot. Basic maintenance and regular oil changes goes a long way in longevity. Riding them hard and putting it away wet is a sure fire recipe for its demise.

The engine internals actually looked pretty good, I was really surprised at the cylinder condition and the fact that the engine turned over and wasn't locked up especially judging by the overall condition of the exterior of the bike I have to say the build is looking much better, I guess there's a lot to say for that front rotating wheel from the first episode, you guys seem to have a lot of fun together which is priceless in my opinion, I've been working on bikes and cars and fixing and building stuff my whole life so I pretty much know how to do all this stuff but I'm gonna join because I think you guys deserve my support and want to see you do well in this new venture.

Great watching! You two crack me up! I'm about to start going thru the Skillshack videos of the teardown, but I'd love to see a walkthru of the shop itself--especially a discussion of the various tools. I'm not a brand snob, I want stuff that works, and I think most home mechanics aren't going to get tied up in form--just function. Especially for the specialty stuff. Here's my favorite gear holder but if I can't use this, here's another way. These are the torque-lock vise-grip pliers or the upgrade eye-bolt (seriously I might need to upgrade my Craftsmans), this is my favorite seal-puller, flywheel puller/case splitter/crank puller (other than Tony and his socks), and so on. I'm watching the video and pausing trying to spy on the stuff in the background! BTW, keep an eye on the magnet on that Motion Pro jammer. I had a clutch basket that wouldn't spin by hand on reassembly...until I found that magnet stuck to the gears instead of the jammer. I still use the tool (or Honest Abe), but I keep an eye out for that. Also, someone clearly cared for that thing before it got parked because the bearings must have had some grease in them for everything to come out relatively easy. I've had to treat RM250 swingarm bolts with a torch, 50/50 ATF/Acetone, and air chisel! I truly was surprised at the condition of the cylinder, and I would have expected rusty water to come out of the water pump!

21:25 You should have used the impact driver before you stripped the Phillips. Now take that hardened straight blade screwdriver bit from the impact set, put a socket and extension on the end, and hammer in the head of the screw a straight slot that will fit that blade perfectly, and the shock may loosen the screw for you. Now, impact it out. Oh, don't forget to get a new screw.

I recently bought a kdx200… it had a skid plate on it and an owner who hadn’t cleaned it since 06 lol. That combines with the missing exhaust gaskets left a thick hard lair of crud very similar to this engine.. an yes thank god for plastic scrapers. I grabbed some of those plastic chisels from harbor freight and I honestly surprise myself, also they promised myself I’d never buy anything that bad again… unless is a 500 or something lol
