Just as we have seen with instant replay, the umpires get it wrong a fair percentage of the time. Some plays are so close that you know that they're just guessing, which means that replays show that they simply guessed correctly on really close plays. This is why balls and strikes will be called electronically within five years. Before that, managers will be able to challenge these calls separately from other challenges.

Some of these you could argue maybe, *just maybe* might have caught the very edge of the plate but it doesn't look it because of the camera angle. But the ones that never leave that batter's box? No excuse there. The MLB umpires must have the strongest union in the country to somehow protect the ones that are so pathetic that there is no excuse for them. Bad calls like this can alter a franchise's fortunes and future. (see the 1997 Game 5 NLCS game with Livan Hernandez's country-mile-wide strike zone as an example) MLB needs to figure out a method for accountability for the umps.

You know what I think would be fun to do if I was one of these hitters getting such bullshit calls? As soon as the ump called it a strike, I would stick my bat WAY over to where the ball actually was, and yell at my entire team on the bench, "Hey guys, the strike zone is WAY over here today. Make sure you leap while swinging." Basically just make the ump look like a complete dumbass without ever saying a word to him or arguing with him. And if I got ejected for it anyway, I'd tell him while leaving the field, "Good, who wants to play anyway with a blind dumbass calling such bullshit calls all game. I'll come back when you get some glasses and can actually SEE what you're doing." That would be such a fun way to handle it.

Do players even want an ump behind the plate? Too many times they make calls that affect the outcome of the game, and honestly it's unreasonable to expect them to make accurate calls for the length of a whole game. Especially when they are trying to track these projectiles moving 100+mph. It's not that people think they are biased or doing anything on purpose, it's just literally impossible to call a game perfectly accurate. They should just take a big bite of humble pie for the sake of the games integrity. I mean, if tennis refs can rely on the cameras tracking a ball moving that fast and making accurate calls withing millimeters of tolerance, baseball should be able to do the same.

Many of the commentators forget that the ball needs to pass ABOVE the plate to be a strike (in addition to being the right height). It is 3-dimensional. It doesn't matter where the catcher catches the ball relative to the rectangle that the program is drawing. That could be way off the plate and it could still be a strike if the ball passed above the place and then moved a lot outward, which happens in many of these pitches when, e.g., the pitchers throws from the right side and the pitch ends up on the left side of the plate.

Well they are taught to set up in the position called the “slot”. They don’t stand middle middle behind the catcher because believe it or not it’s actually a worse angle. Also another reason is if they stand in the middle they are much more likely to get rocked by a foul ball. It’s a safety thing.

I get that there are some bad calls and we all have to expect that from time to time. But some of these strikes look worse than what they actually are. The strike zone box they show is not consistent from game to game. I will always blame a batter with two strikes taking a pitch two inches outside and getting a third strike called. Don't leave it to the umpire to decide your fate. A big part of what makes a catcher good is framing the ball and making close pitches look good. Make framing pitches illegal and and I bet the umpires get more consistent.
