I too disliked If We Were Villains, as did my son who is more or less one of those Shakespeare-obsessed people you mention. He absolutely HATED it. I loved your discussion of the book, though!

I think I love Miss Marple Agatha Christie too much, which is what the first one is based on!

The Secret History was the first book I ever DNF'ed and I did it 86% through. Life's too short to read books you don't enjoy. Goodreads stats do not reflect enjoyment and that's what I've decided to prioritize

I was also very underwhelmed by The Thursday Murder Club. I wound up dnf’ing it. Jessie Burton. OOF. When I first started reading The Miniaturist, I was intrigued. By the end of the novel I was just angry. It’s a bad book. Not good. I do not understand how it was so hyped. It’s one I should have dnf’d, but I kept hoping for a satisfying ending. Nope. 👎

It was soo boring!! I really didn’t like it😂

Everything you mentioned about IWWV is exactly why I never tried to read it despite the hype, I'm not going to dive deep into Shakespear just to understand this book. And I really wanted to read A Song of Wraith and Ruins but something there didn't click with me and I put it down very early on.

You made the right call, the hype got to me with that one! And I think I should have DNFed A Song of Wraith and Ruin too, it wasn’t necessarily a terrible book but just really not for me!

I love Dark Academia, but yeah I hated If We Were Villains too. The quoting was unbearable indeed. I don't like when people recommend it as THE dark academia book. I understand your feelings about Bone Shard as well. I didn't like it enough to continue the series, but I've heard the series goes downhill. Even fans weren't too fond of the conclusion

I think I need to keep an open mind about dark academia but the books are so hit and miss for me! What’s one you would recommend? And I’m glad I didn’t bother carrying on with the Bone Shard Daughter series then!!💚

@@LydLoves only read it if you like it! I love Ninth House and I also really enjoyed The Secret History and Babel. So maybe those if you haven't read them? Yeah, me too!

The night house also made my worst list. (though I didn't see the unreliable narrator bit because I read this on kindle) I just thought the "twist" was the biggest cop out, and it pissed me off

Exactly!! The twist was so cheap I hated it!!

I found Thursday murder club quite different, it’s a great story. It’s hilarious,emotionally moving, it has twists and depth. The author mentions in an interview how he used people he knew to base some of the characters because of their personality.

I’m so glad you enjoyed it! I think I would have had a different experience with it if I hadn’t been so familiar with the book it’s based on, but I’m glad you had a good time with it!
