    Yeah, that's why I avoid re-writes. Done well, they have the potential to be amazing, I suppose, but so few writers are actually capable of doing it well, particularly the ones inclined to re-write classics. Also, I think the publishers' standards get lowered because they see a handy way to market it to all the "Austen" fans out there.

    Same, I believe people forget that Jane Austen isn't just romance. Hell, most of her books are just women dealing with how the patriarchy makes their lives harder and the love interest is just thrown there, although well written. Pride and Prejudice's WHOLE PLOT was because the Bennets would be kicked off Longbourn once their father passed away, and HALF of the drama of that book was that the only two men that could make good husbands for them, Darcy and Bingley, would never traditionally marry them - because they are poor, scandalous, unorthodox, etc. If you can't see the story past the romance, then what's the point even retelling it?

    I love how Unwound presents a "compromise" where you have to raise and finance a child to the age of 13, and then are given the choice whether or not to terminate them. Seems almost like a strawman of Pro-choice ideology if you ask me.

  • @engf223

    @engf223

    The world building is greatly expanded in the later books in the series, and by the end it’s pretty clear that the “compromise” was something thought up by powerful government business lobbyists to allow them to have access to a lot of organs that were pretty much indefinitely viable due to advancements in organ transplant technology developed during the war. It didn’t actually have much to do with the war, and was very manipulatively advertised so that people would think it was this amazing compromise which solved all their problems and more.

Sometimes I feel bad for not rating a book higher because I get that representation is important, but I also like being objective in my reviews. If the book isn't well written or have good characters, then it's not objectively a good book to me regardless of the message of the book or the representation in the book.

    I'm halfway through Shadow and Bone right now, and this book is so anime it hurts lol. I do like it, I just wish we had gotten the story from literally any other perspective besides Alina. Like, I get being insecure about yourself, but this is just painful to read.

    I have so many questions about Hot Pterodactyl Boyfriend, it sounds horrifying. Like there was a pterodactyl casually walking around? Would unprotected sex result in baby pterodactyls like the donkey-dragons from Shrek??

    THANK YOU for speaking about shadow and bone and not only was it so blunt it also had so much cliché tropes of your usual YA fantasy and it was too empty. I was so excited when I finally fully read that book because the relief at the end I felt was unimaginably huge. And not gonna lie, Leigh Bardugo made one of my favourite books of all time (six of crows duology) but she definetly could've done more in this book as well.

    Main takeaways from the video: 1) Cindy automatically hates any and all romance novels don’t @ me bc this is canonical fact 2) Receiving a 1 star means reading your book is literally a fate worse than death

    I cannot convey to you Cindy how much respect I have for you for being able to review these books so in depth. This is most definitely due to the miserable fact that I am absolutely awful at focusing on reading and yet also zone out too much with audiobooks, so I skim read and miss over half the details and have to go back to clarify what happened. This is definitely the reason that I was so confused when you mentioned the Grisha trilogy. I am 1000% certain that I barely absorbed anything that happened except what interested me (e.g. pretty people and gorey fight scenes), so my brain automatically loved almost every single character I came across and saw almost no fault. I am starting to realize that maybe oversharing to strangers could be a toxic trait but who has time for studying and working on concerning behavior and working on self loathing? Great video as always Cindy

    I always appreciate the fact that these great booktubers read all these bad books so I don’t have to. I also always appreciate Cindy’s jokes and sense of humor. Which means, basically, that this video is great :D

    I'm binging Cindy's videos because depression and ADHD has rendered me incapable of inhaling books with the same intensity as before and I was genuinely looking forward to reading the first two books because I love dogs and Pride and Prejudice remixes but I guess Cindy just saved me a lot of trouble. Also, I noticed you heart every comment!! Knowing you see every comment despite probably getting hundreds every day is very wholesome. We love our romantically repressed queen hate-reading and spitting facts
