    I knew a guy who in the early 60's bought a surplus WW2 nylon (I think) parachute. He talked a friend into taking a door off his Tripacer and up they went to 3,000' above the airport. He bailed out, chute opened, and he did a stand up landing. One of those "been there, done that" things.

    What is the purpose of the turn before the landing? Does that bring him in at a faster speed than a straight in approach?

  • @slartybarfastb3648

    @slartybarfastb3648

    6 жыл бұрын

    SanFranciscoBay It builds airspeed. Airpeed = lift. He uses that lift to flatten out the landing. A straight in would have such a high sink rate the chances of survival would be about the same as running a motorcycle into a wall at 75mph. Or, an elevator falling into the basement.

  • @sanfranciscobay

    @sanfranciscobay

    6 жыл бұрын

    Slartybarfast B 1. Are you saying that he has to make the turn prior to landing to gain more air speed which is then used for lift to prevent his descent rate too fast? 2. What is the purpose of flying/using such a small canopy? Is it to see how small a canopy can be made and still make safe landings? 3. Could he run the landing in or is he traveling too fast and has to slide his feet to decrease the speed until he can run the landing? I assume there is no stand up landing on a canopy this small?

  • @slartybarfastb3648

    @slartybarfastb3648

    6 жыл бұрын

    SanFranciscoBay Yes, these canopies produce lift which increases with speed. The best way to increase speed is through a steep dive. Unlike an airplane, we can't simply push the nose over because the skydiver suspended beneath acts as a pendulum which naturally will gravitate under the canopy, thus raising the nose. In a steep turn the skydiver is held out horizontal by centrifugal force which allows the nose to point straight down. This changes the lift vector from vertical to horizontal as well. In this way, lift no longer counteracts gravity and airspeeds may increase greatly to speeds resembling freefall. When the skydiver stops the turning dive, the pendulum effect resumes. The skydiver will settle under the canopy and the airspeed will decrease as well as the dive. That's the principle. Speed = lift. Lift opposes gravity. The landing is extremely dangerous though due to the speed. The smaller the canopy, the higher speed necessary to produce enough lift.

  • @slartybarfastb3648

    @slartybarfastb3648

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@theginganinjaofficial I was incorrect about the definition. Any canopy under 150 square feet is defined as 'high-performance' regardless of wing loading. In the case of a 37 square feet canopy this still results in 4 times smaller than the basic definition. A 150 square feet canopy is recommended only for D-license holders. That's a bit overboard in my opinion and the skydiver's weight could have a big impact on the canopy's performance. To me, 1:1 is a much better definition than the arbitrary 150 square feet definition which ignores the impact of wing loading.

  • @Swooper.x96

    @Swooper.x96

    Жыл бұрын

    @@slartybarfastb3648 The reason why the 150 square feet is the definition is because anything under a 150, REGARDLESS of wing loading, is going to have more responsive inputs and less forgiving flight characteristics because of the shorter lines and shorter wingspan of the canopy. 150 is not arbitrary and wing loading has nothing to do with it. A B license skydiver that weighs 118 lbs out the door and only has 60 jumps should not be flying a 120, even though that is only a 0.9 Wing Loading.
