THE WORLD'S RUDEST CHINESE RESTAURANT! They Throw Plates at You!!!

The World’s Rudest Chinese Restaurant. Wong Kei in London’s Chinatown. It’s renowned for the staff being abusive, obnoxious, rude, arrogant and angry, they shout Swear and scream at their customers. They said that they have changed their ways, but if you read the reviews one customer was told to shut up. I asked for my prawn crackers three times and was just totally ignored. When the plates came the lady literally threw them on the table at me! Oh, and make sure you have cash ready, they will not be happy when you misread the sign that demands cash only.

Wong Kei restaurant changed owners a few years back and they hired all new staff. I've been going there since I was 16 years old,(I'm 57 now) the food is just ok but it used to be much better and much more social because a lot of Local Chinese people used to go there.

I lived in China for three depressing years. Believe me that was not rude service, I have had far, far worse, not only in restaurants but shops, markets, hotel receptions, bars, ferries - any contact with westerners. The worse thing I found was if I went into a shop to buy, say some drinking glasses, they would disappear into the back of the shop and return with a beautifully wrapped parcel. On opening at home it was inevitable that they had substituted some broken glasses, I quickly got wise to this as you can imagine. However, to be fair, I also met some really pleasant people so although it doesn’t even itself out I can confirm there are some very friendly and polite Chinese people out there.

Let me take you back several decades. I lived in London in the 80s and this was the "go-to" Chinese restaurant. I don't remember downstairs being like that at all. Back then it was the usual traditional Chinese decor...but I'm sure we always ate upstairs. On the menu board outside (in same place) there were set meals....but the set meal for two wasn't much compared to set meal for four. So, couples would hang about outside by the menu board (us included) to team up with a random couple to enjoy the experience. It was well known practice amongst those who weren't just popping in the once. I remember there was a couple of big round tables upstairs as well 2 or 4 person tables. If it was really busy (it always was) chances are we'd (+ random couple) would sit on the big table (probably sit 10). It was fun to meet new people and share a huge fabulous meal. All the food was placed in the middle and it was a free for all more or less. Sometimes diners would just stick with their own food but just occasionally once everyone had got chatting it got to be shared from the serving plates between all so there was very little wastage. Couldn't imagine anything like that today. Yes, back then the staff were "rude" (alikened to Fawlty Towers) and the service incredibly quick - they wanted you to eat and go...not a place for a romantic date night. But....the food was amazing and knowing they're still in business 35 years on is testimony to that.

Watching this (and reading the comments) was a lot of fun. I've actually been to Wong Kei on Wardour St. in London... I think it was 20 or 25 years ago. The reason I went was that I had been many times to the similarly-named Wong Kee in Chinatown in New York (long since gone). I don't know if there was a connection, but I thought the food at the London place was quite good... not nearly as pricey back then as on the menu you showed. It looks a lot different now in the video, inside and out, but definitely the same location. I don't remember any particular reaction to the service... they do a lot of business all day long and they're trying to get people in and out quickly. However, sometimes to get the waiter's attention you might have to stick a leg out and trip him as he goes past. Noodle soups are usually good at this kind of Cantonese restaurant. I think I had roast pork noodle soup.😋

The food looked really good! As for the service, you should visit the restaurants in NYC Chinatown, very typical of Wong Kei. As you say, because they are busy and want a quick turnaround may explain it. As for going cash only, here in the US credit card companies can have high fees, so I don't blame them but contactless is much better during the pandemic.

I visited Wong Kei in the early Nineties. In those days the restaurant was spread over three floors - not sure if it was in the same building as now. The waiting style was astonishingly rude, but highly amusing. I asked the waiter for a barbecue chicken dish, to be told in a cross voice: (please excuse the apparent stereotyping, but this is word for word) "No. You not like that. It cold and it got blood in it." Glad I didn't have the bird's nest soup..

So you haven’t experienced the waiter started clearing up the table and mopping the floor before you finish your food. Once the waiter even told us off for talking and said we should finish our food instead of talking. That happened years ago when I was a young girl. It happened not just once but a few times. We were once being told off for speaking English instead of Chinese Cantonese but unfortunately English was our common language. I never return since then.

We went regularly to this place 30+ years ago, always fantastic food. If you want 5 star dining experience, this isn’t the place to go but you couldn’t fault the food at all. When we were going there, they had large tables which seated 8 and if there were 2 or more people, they’d tell you to sit on the table that had a space. As we sat there one day, we saw a young lad and his girlfriend come in, must have been 18/19 years old, they were asked how many people, they said two and were directed to the table we were sitting in, the boy looked at the waiter and said “it’s my girlfriend and my first year anniversary together, can we have just a table for two”? The waiter didn’t even pause with his reply “you want good food, you sit there, you want kissy kissy, you go somewhere else”… the boy looked at him, stunned and they slowly sat down at the table and saw everyone grinning at the comment :)

When I lived in London in the 1980's I loved Wong Kei's. I was shown by a friend from Hong Kong how to get the best from the restaurant and once you understand you get a great meal at a great price, served efficiently. This restaurant is set-up to serve food quickly. Know what you want before you enter the restaurant. There is a menu in the window. Choose just one or two dishes. Expect to have your meal with jasmine tea. Go in, ignoring any queue at the door, find a seat and sit down. You will immediately be attended to. Don't ask for the menu or the wine list. Don't ask any questions about the food, just order. It will come with a large covered bowl of plain boiled rice, a teapot of jasmine tea and a cup. There will be chop sticks and a spoon on the table. Avoid asking for a knife and fork. When you are finished take the bill (the check) to the till and pay with cash. You don't need to leave a tip. Follow these guidelines and you will have very efficient service and a lovely meal. If you want to be pampered and if you want spend time luxuriating over your meal, and have it with wine, or stuff on the side then you should choose another restaurant. When you get your head around the fact that the staff are not your servants, they are your equals and they are they are their to provide you with good quality, authentic Chinese food at a great price. It is expected that once you have finished eating you should pay and leave so that that place can accommodate another hungry soul.

Though I have had some friends who won't go there anymore because they were badly treated. I always found the food very good and was never disappointed. I haven't been there since covid but am longing to go back when I can.

This restaurant was around in the mid/late 80's when I lived in London, and had the same reputation then.. the waiters would say 'what you want?.. hurry up make up your mind"

I went there years ago. It was a very busy evening, and we were put on a table with a family, who weren’t asked if they minded that they had 2 strangers joining them. When the plates came, it was like being dealt cards at a casino😁the meal was good too.

that shrimp toast (prawn toast in the UK) looked pretty delish. here in the states shrimp toast is usually included in the pu pu platter appetizer option. i haven't had them in years.

They are rude in a funny way. I went once with a mate and as soon as I walked in a lady looked at me and shouted “You, upstairs. Go upstairs you!”. I said thank you and went to be seated upstairs. Twenty minutes later my friend asked about the “Chicken skin” item on the menu because it seemed unusual and a waiter hilariously replied “It’s a chickens skin”. The food was good, but it’s more of a canteen than a restaurant for me. There’s too much going on around you for a two hour, three course sit down. Great review.

This place had a legendary reputation in the 80s. Seriously rude to customers. I heard the management had decided they needed to change 😂. Anyhow the food looked fantastic, Wok to table in 30 seconds fresh as a daisy. 9.5 for me 😋 and I'm glad they have moved into the 21st century!😊

Was a regular at Wong Kei for many years. Can't fault the quality of food and the service is just pure theatre! Well worth a visit.

Cash only because they do not want to pay bank fees, or pay for card machines. I only pay by cash for food and coffee so perfect for me.
