The world's most powerful raptor

Ойын-сауық

International wildlife photographer Neil Rettig and his wife, Laura, live on a farm near Prairie du Chien, WI. Neil shows Glen Loyd his Harpy Eagle, and Laura tells about the patience needed to film these rare raptors in the rain forests of Central and South America. See what Neil and Laura describe in a 4 minute excerpt from National Geographic's "The Secret Life of Predators."

Waqar Ghulam I honestly think a California condor is the strongest since they prey on stuff like wolves and young moose’s and even deer though they mostly scavenge....

Mr. Rettig, I'm interested in the behavior of the bird when it's on your arm. Is the bird nervous, showing dominance, angry with you, playing with you ? It would be interesting to know what those pecks he's trying to give you are and what that open mouth means. I notice you don't seem especially anxious, although obviously he could seriously injure you if he wanted to. I've read elsewhere that certain birds used in falconry, like golden eagles and gyrfalcons, can be quite a handful on the fist because of aggressive behavior and are not for inexperienced falconers. I'm guessing this bird is not for amateurs either.

The bird is distressed you can see it by his constantly opened mouth and flopped wings. Maybe it's because of the camera because it doesn't seem to attack the guy holding him. But it is not good to stress the bird.

OH MY!! I am so grateful to you for sharing this amazing video!! - clearly your work is all about healthy conservation of some kind of these masterful birds? - The NG society relies heavily upon such close encounters with such predatory animals, especially those whose natural habitats and behaviours remain steadily on the incline. 😄😄😄😄😄😄

Noah Miller I understand ypur point but without specimens for education conservation becomes difficult. Humans are selfish and often need to see creatures to give a shit about them. If they see epic eagles they might care to protect the Amazon.

Americans, for the most part, love all the animals in the world and know that no country has them all. There is no jealousy or envy in the heart of an American and the only thing that could be said is that instead of envy there is only love and concern for the preservation of the species, no matter what region of the world they belong to.
