As someone who lives in latin america, I'm painfully aware of how popular this "game" is, kids get really annoying with it, but at the same time I understand why it's that popular, almost any cheap phone or tablet can run this game, here not everyone has the chance to get a decent phone, a PC, or a console to play something like fortnite or PUBG on, so they just play what they can.

I dont know in latam, but in sea (especially Indonesia) mobile games kinda start the engine and popularize esport scene here. So, im gotta give credit to them.

@@RedReborn well cus like the luxar said, they don't have a PC or console to play other games that are way bigger in esport. Counter Strike 1.6 and SZ as well as Dota and Dota 2 were the epitome of esport in Indonesia but can't really compete in the global scale. Teams that tried to, were all crushed. Therefore, the esport scene died down. Then mobalog, PUBG Mobile (Not PC for the same reason stated above) and FreeFire came along and rekindle the scene. Eventhough only up to the SEA scale cus as we all know, outside that, people don't really look at mobile games that way.

I live in Indonesia, and yes this is true. But, pc and playstation rental used to be a trend 10 years ago, before the mobile games exist. I actually dont know why most of us are switching to mobile devices. And I know a really really rich person in my school that still play mobile games, even though he has an idle ps5. I asked him, why dont he play the ps5, and he answered that most of his friends play mobile games, so he just need to follow the trend. Me personally, I used to be a mobile gamer, and i just bought my own computer 3 years ago, because of the pandemic. And I think, the biggest difference between mobile games and computer or playstation games is the difficulties. Most of online mobile games are aimed for competitive market, meanwhile there are a lots of type of computer or playerstation games, such as sim, competitive, casual, arcade, etc. And the number of mobile games are also limited, so you wont expect to heard about a game title that you dont really know.

Fun fact for Valorant Players: Remember the brazilian team who won the 2022 Champions? Yes. LOUD started as a Free Fire team and became wealthy af. That way they expanded to others games. There are others teams that did the same and are around because of Free Fire: Fluxo (who has a former LOUD player as CEO) and Los Grandes for example.

As vietnamese this game was original dev by a small dev team from my country so it's kinda have some wild ideas at first but then later they got buy back by Garena (basically EA of vietnam lol) and this is how they are turn out. It's such a shame because i remember how passion the dev team was before the take over. And no surprise, most of free fire players (at least in Vietnam) is under 12 (i even have a nephew play this game and he's just barely 10, he play free fire and AOV which is another game of garena of course).

For anyone who want to know what the combat is like: Aimbot is legitimately a part of the game. It’s basically who can aimbot you the fastest wins. That’s why when you play it on mouse and keyboard it can be mad annoying because it actually messes up your aim. The meta is the movement, meaning tap tac sprint so they can’t lock on, then spray them with an smug.

basically the meta of this game is movement, hit and move, or hit and place gloo. Its actually really competitive once you get to a higher skill level. pay to win is a small part cuz paid skins provide little but noticeable buffs, but still beating pay to win skins players is easy once you master this game. i remember starting in lockdown and reaching grandmaster, the highest rank. after that it became repititive so I left it

For anyone who want to know: This game was originally developed by 111Dots Studio, a small Dev team in Vietnam(yeah, for real) and called: Free Fire: Battle Royale. At first it's just GTA San Andreas with Battle Royale mode. The game quickly became popular after just an alpha version being released. Then Garena, again, "see this game has potential to become the biggest in mobile gaming as well as esports industry". They bought the whole studio, changed the name into Free Fire: Battlegrounds, then Garena Free Fire and here we are.

I am from south asia Pakistan, I know why it became popular, It's popular because 1. South asian audience doesn't pay for games, being free was one of the reasons. 2. There was no gaming online gaming culture here as internet wasn't available to most of the people. 3. This game blew in lockdown as it's competitor Pubg Mobile got banned, which was already popular and had a bad image of being addictive and being reasons for crimes and suicides, so parent won't allow their children's to play the game. 4. cheap phones allowed everyone to play this game. 5. youtube content made the popular 6.Most of the player base are kids, so no surprise it has huge downloads, even on youtube most viewed videos after music are kid content(Cocomelon and stuff) so kids were free in lockdown and made the game popular. 7. as lockdown is over now I rarely see anybody play this game, and the content creators of the game have seen massive decline in their reach. lastly, south asian is the daily active farm of the world shortly DAU farm where there is a huge population, huge audiences for mobile apps but the moment you ask them for money you realize 3 million active users on a game PUBG Pc is better than a 100 million users of a game like freefire.

Brazil had a MASSIVE player count for that game, and as one i saw EVERY FRIEND of mine playing that during high school, and i gave a shot too was funny yo play with friends but they were super tryhard with the ARENA mode that i think is the most popular mode i played for fun but didn't got into the community, big reason was that the game could run in a potato and the region i live in is kinda low income

Legit just found out about this a few months ago. As part of my job, I was doing some research on the most downloaded apps in google play store and this came out as one of the top google results. When I saw the downloads I couldnt believe my eyes 😂. I also used to play pubgm and other mobile battle royale but I have never heard of this game. After watcing this video, it has become clear to me why. Low skill ceiling + relatively lightweight game means popular with kids. Needs to be lightweight because most kids, especially in developing countries, get hand-me-down phones from their parents or siblings so they tend to have older slower phones. Developing contries in general use more mid-range phones including adults. Freefire knows their target demographic and capitalized on it.

So , let me explain , I have played free fire for 2 years and basically at one point the game just becomes a flex show , people don't play it tactically like PUBG , it becomes more about cool you can be like some kind of gacha game , having 10,000likes on your profile reacting top 500, region , having banner and things like that , it's just a 15 min match where you don't have to think much and playing in custom lobbies with unlimited walls is very fun. Idk about the KZread community though , it's unhinged.

Let's be honest What made free fire popular is being compatible with potato phones and all these paid skins and p2w elements which attract kids And it was a big hit despite having bad graphics, physics, animation and especially taking an arcady style with the aiming and extremely powerful aim assist and it's toxic fan base.... I really regret playing it and spending money on it

I love this game's artstyle and gameplay style! The reason why it is so big is because most of the players are from India and Garena Free Fire's popularity rose up in 2020 when we had nothing to do because of the Lockdown, I'm not gonna lie, it kinda ruined my life since I was only 12 back then but it was still a memorable year, waiting for AoT and JJK, staying up after my bedtime, and doing other things I couldn't because of School, the fall of Free Fire began when they bought back rare items and didn't do anything the players said, Garena didn't want to listen to their fans and did their own things, even now, they are adding many things that the players don't want, yet they've still not done a single thing the players have demanded for years
