What a beast! I`m 60 years old, born about 10km in distance to this „secret place“. My Grandpa worked his whole life „beim Daimler“, his first boss was Rudolf Uhlenhaut. He told us all the stories about this great engineer and their dominance in racing. Thanks for this nice video reminding me to my hometown and childhood.

One reason for the end of the program was the accident at Le Mans. Pierre Levegh's 300 SLR hit another car from behind on the pit straight (the other car was avoiding Mike Hawthorne's Jaguar) and was launched into the crowd at about 150 mph. No safety barriers in those days. Levegh and over 80 spectators were killed.

It’d be interesting to know how the magnesium body was assembled. You can’t weld magnesium for well known reasons. That’s why the Bugatti Atlantic used hundreds of rivets on pinched seams he cleverly incorporated as a design element. The Mercedes has no visible seams and looks like typical bodywork of the period. Be fun to know how they did that?

Yeah, relatively easily on almost any modern superbike. And they'll also get there much more quickly. The top speed of Japanese road bikes is restricted to 300kph by the use of limiters and/or gearing. That doesn't mean they can't be derestricted, which is something that is necessary for racing. But yea, 300kph is relatively easy to hit on a superbike. I've certainly seen it on the clock on a couple of bikes, though I know that they'd probably have been shy of that real speed by close to 20kph or so. Never really felt the need to go faster, 'cos you're approaching other vehicles at some very significant speeds.

Rudolf Uhlenhaut was the engineer that designed the racing version of that car (convertible) and then the 300SL roadcars. @@bsimpson6204 I know. I get how much of a bummer it would be to bring this up in this video. But the way she glosses over it and talks about "Yay it won so many races and is wroth more because Mercedes stopped racing that year" makes it sound like its all some happy situation of events. I mean Mercedes made a monster of a car so dangerous it did something that to this day has not been as tragic in motor racing.

@@bsimpson6204 There was a very sound reason the race continued. If it had been stopped, 250,000 spectators would have clogged the roads around Le Mans, making it much more difficult for emergency medical vehicles to get to the hundreds of injured, as well as hindering their drive to the hospital. Even more people (injured) would have died.

@@gutz1981 it's funny and sad how every time there's a woman reviewing a car video everyone in the comments feels the need to fact-check her. She knows more about the car then probably. I've watch five people review this car and out of all those five people she had the most information and most facts about this car. One dude literally hopped in the car review in the car he didn't even know what the buttons were and what they meant. He had to use the owners manual. Yet nobody came in the comments fact-checking him and making him seem like he wasn't qualified.

@Derek Heeps - I only know what I have read about Uhlenhaut, but that is enough to make me realize that he was an exceptional engineer and Team Manager. It had to be a very hard decision for him to make, but he listened to one of his drivers at the '55 Le Mans who encouraged him to withdraw the factory cars out of respect for the dead spectators. That driver was American, John Fitch, whose co driver was the one killed in that terrible crash.

Place them where you feel they’re needed and not when you don’t feel as if they are if you are an American though, put a comma after words like because and and. I’m from the uk so, it’s not in our language to do so. I completely understand and agree you though. But you may want to tell that guy you were saying the 300 SLR was what you were talking about.

Mercedes -under Rudi's direction-took the chassis of the W196 Grand Prix car & put a gullwing body on it. This beast is still good for 200+ MPH. And it's ROAR-I got to hear a W196 at Long Beach in 1976 with Fangio driving it. Good thing Ewe told bonehead to get away from the exhaust-otherwise someone might have got a bit hot. And deaf.
