The World's Most Benevolent Authoritarian: Lee Kuan Yew?

I explain how Singapore's founding father was a benevolent authoritarian. Yes, he did many things that infringed on what would be normal civil liberties in the West. For example, he forced men to keep their hair short. And he intervened to stop strikes in private companies like Singapore Airlines. But he did so to improve the lives of ordinary Singaporeans.

it is thinking like this that prevent us from having another LKY. had people use the same argument to suggest the colonial system is better, we would never had reach where we are today. people who follow LKY back then took a LEAP OF FAITH. no one knew if Singapore was going to work nor did LKY had any merit when he started. so this hero worshipping is missing the point. people are not born great, and to argue no one can be better than LKY would mean this country will never see anyone better. because you have already dismiss that as a possibility.

It’s a legacy. The future belongs to Singaporeans and all those within. @@lagrangeweiUghh.. narratives like that is one of the sole reasons why no LKY would be existing for a while. Look, don't be like the Western world which falling apart because they disrespected their past and their traditional values,. it's like ashes to ashes. Those who doesn't respect tradition/history or give credit to what is due are deemed to fail. Those who really value what is important to people really matters the most. That's how Singaporean gave their trust and faith on LKY. He has that certain "thing" on him or prospect that why he has been chosen..Now,. there is the fact that there will never be someone like him,.it's the undeniable truth,.but to say there will be anyone better, is a complete lie. One person's purpose is different from the other and comparison will always rob the value of one's existence. What I'm saying is the next great leader will always have his struggle regardless if he compares himself to LKY or not. But if he has the "prospect" of what LKY used to have like cunningness and bravery., then there should be no problem. People will always put their faith on someone they truly believe,. it doesn't have to do always with the notions of "leap" of faith. If he knows what he do and prove it with his own sheer of willpower, then he knows what he do. Great men on history never cared on what other thinks of them,. but what made them special is they truly believe what they say,. like literally.

I wouldn’t brand him as a dictator, but, a harsh disciplinary father. True, some of his policies were harsh, but as the gentleman in the video described, he meant well for the general well-being for Singapore in the long term. I would say he used his powers well overall. And the people (with that vote counts), willingly gave him the power. If you look across the world, this day this age, one would agree that his measures and policies brought us to where we are, from one without proper military, water sources other than 4 reservoirs to feed 2 million people to 100% water self sufficiency, a quay that relied on bum boats to fetch goods from open sea as a port to a maritime stronghold. But the father was harsh, he expected everyone to suck it up and ride the waves, and move on and upwards despite the hardships. While leaving the more pressing issues of slums, gangs, firearms, water issues, economic planning, to him and his team. Like, all you need is to study hard, leave the running of the house to the father and mother.

What a misunderstanding of great Mr Lee. Do you even seen Lee Kuan Yew treat Suharto harshly? Or treat Deng Xiao Ping with disrespect?? What did he do? He used softness and strategy to balance Singapore interest. Malaysia is deathly afraid of US , Lee kuan yew knows that. So he pull resources to persuade US to protect Singapore indirectly. But He never back down from US because he knows what Hypocrisy weakness US has. He used them , Giving rule of law as mirror to US. Now... Why China upset with Singapore nowadays? Bully? Well if you pro US blatantly like nowadays you bound to irk somebody in China. Look at yourself... Do you look down on Indonesian? If you are you are making gravest mistake as SIngapore. Because Indonesia will not be US lackey and China lackey. When Indonesia very upset at Singapore, then Singapore will perish. No matter what kind of military you have. Lee Kuan Yew Knew this and treat Suharto as royalty even after he stepped down. DO you know it? If you dont understand all of this then Lee Kuan Yew was right. I told them how could Singapore claimed it did not know about the exercise when it was announced to the public weeks before the actual exercise. On the night of 09 Aug 1965 when he announced the independence of SG, he also acutely aware of SG vulnerability as a tiny island without natural resources, without hinderland, without any military protection and a multi racial society that is not harmonious. Yet he was bold to promise “Singapore will survive!” He gave his all and life dedicated for the survival of SG. His promises were achieved within his lifetime and Sg went from strength to strength, much stronger than the country that kicks it out. Sg is a shiny little red dot that all countries turn their eyes to on its remarkable achievements and nation building within 50yrs. LKY is indeed our great founding PM and global statesman. People fixating on governing ideologies like democracy or authoritarianism etc are missing the point. It doesn't matter what your governing ideologies are, its the results that matters. What's the point of having a "democratic" voting system like in America for example when politicians are responsive to their funders not voters. There is a reason why Singapore banned political donations and ads, because if money is involved, its no longer democratic even if people can vote, it becomes plutocracy. Also, nothing in this world is free, free to do bad is no different from freedom to do good. What we want is freedom to do good and restrictions to prevent people from doing bad. Which is why we have law and order, to literally restrict people's freedom to do bad. But somehow, America or the western world lost sense of what is good and bad. You can sue people for libel and slander but you can't sue people for racists and hate speech. Instead of fostering a law abiding culture, people thinks its their right and an efficient way of life to have guns to deter crimes, even at the cost of higher level of violent crimes like school shooting and countless gun robbery at convenient stores and break ins.

The word "dictator" is used as a description of the very, very high amount of power Lee had (not in a bad sense). Indeed, I believe he used much of his power benevolently. Even some of Lee's admirers like Ho Kwon Ping agreed that he had almost absolute power. And absolute power is the essence of a dictatorship according to several dictionaries. Examples of (almost) absolute power: * Regulating things as minute as haircuts * Interfering with private companies like Singapore Airlines * The ability to detain people for extended periods without trial Again, I give these examples as descriptions (without value judgements).

Your first sentence, is already wrong. Your last sentence, about not judging, is quite blissfully ignorant. Words and sentences have inherent meanings, and are informed by history and the social constructs of the day. But enough of gibberish. I'll give an example in plain English: I can, for instance, use quite colorful words to string together a description of how you are conceived, without ever deviating from dictionaries' definitions. People will laugh at the joke, but you will most definitely take offense at attempts to describe your parent's historic actions. In other words, one can be cool until one's nose gets punched. And right now, you are punching my nose.

In my opinion, he delivered above and beyond infinitely more than what anyone could have hoped for Singapore when this city state was kicked out of the Malaya Federation. Our democracy did quite alright, and we were fortunate enough to vote in Lee Tung Hui and Tsai Ing Wen. They presided over Taiwan just as astutely as Lee Kuan Yew ruled SG. LKY didn't want to separate from Malaysia. Yet, his desire didn't come true. It might be his biggest regret. As the first Prime Minister of Singapore, he had to achieve many things to build the new country, no choice. Now that the political and economic trajectories are different, so is the mentality of the Singaporeans being affluent, Singapore need to expand the horizons to work with the citizens to prosper the society. Things always change, our mind must change to bring in the best possible outcome.

A true leader brings his people to a destination that he visionised what will be the best for them, and, most importantly, he made sure the future of Singapore continues to grow. A true leader cannot fear opposition or losing favorism from the people, he leads his people with an iron hand without corruption. This is what Singapore differentiates from other countries. And he brings his people head held high wherever they go.

it is problematic to argue because his bad policies wasn't done out of his own interest, that those mistake were somehow less evil. they would have consequences for singapore for generations to come. in particular because later politician would use the fact that since LKY did it, it would not be wrong for them to do so either. and this worshipping of politician figure would lead down a terrible path of stagnatation, and that I feel is why LKY never wanted to be entombed. He needed the country to move beyond him.

I cannot agree with the labeling of the west calling LKY a dictator! Such simplification and labeling doesnt do justice to anyone let alone Mr LKY. Next point during his time LKY's style and leadership was solely needed to help Singapore to be where it is today, under GCT Singapore soften and became more consultation driven and under LHL even more so. If u do a more in-depth study of Mr LKY u findout that he can change his mind if u can present concrete and solid arguments to push your case it is very hard to convince him otherwise but its possible if u can provide more in-depth insights and also issues that he might have overlooked. I will argue that the world now needs more such figures like Mr LKY whose heart remains with the people and the policies are for the people and the vast majority. That is the true brilliance of the man and what he has achieved in his lifetime and earned the gratitude of a nation-simply labeling him with western labels of being a dictator just plain ignore what he has truly achieved. The whole world needs such leaders that place their national interest for their country and for their people first and if u look around u only see figures that the west coined in the same brush as dictators, authoritarian etc... and forever overlooking whether these leaders are working for their country or their people or simply for themselves.... But there is only one LKY in this world and hopefully we can uncover similar leaders to LKY from Africa, South America and the rest of the Global South.

I guess we have to be honest with ourself, he was seen as a dictator or autocrat because he have absolute powers and demands absolute obedience from Singaporeans, however his authoritarian way of governing Singapore was never for his personal gains but for the benefits of the nation as a whole. Many regards him as the patriarch of Singapore because he rule Singapore as a community, some of his polices were seen as draconian by certain individuals because he doesn’t value personal belief of individuals if it doesn’t provides any gains to the nation. To him, he have a responsibility to the whole nation, he cannot and will not allowed for any risks that might destroy Singapore, so he rather be the strict patriarchal figure than be a benevolent figure to these individuals. Many Singaporeans might feel aggrieved but later understood that LKY had to do what he had to do, they were not wrong neither was LKY in his position was in the wrong too. The only man in the world till this date that took full responsibility for the whole nation, and only strive for his nation without any personal gains. For those that reviled him, be honest with yourself, would you be able to do better? Is/was there anyone in this world that you can think of that is/was able live/lived up to him?

He's right about certain versions of Islam being practiced though. The totalitarian version of Sharia in Afghanistan would never integrate with Singappre, nor would the kind that leads to ISIS or the gang rapists in the UK, India and other countries. A peaceful apolitical Islam can integrate. Most religions that had political influence and power bare their fangs, and need to be defanged before they can be accepted in the modern world. Note that Islam as compared to other major world religions is the closest among them to a political ideology as opposed to just a religion, and that the more you learn about it, the more you question if it needs to modernise given its views on women, the afterlife and what is considered "just".
