I used to drive the 43's out of Kings X up the ECML... With 4500 hp under the bonnet ( 2250 hp ) one up front and one up the botty there was plenty of power on tap... Pulling out of the station on notch five with the Paxman Valenta turbo's screaming their little heads off and clouds of exhaust smoke ( sorry Greta Thunberg ) was something to behold with more excitement to enjoy... 125 mph here we come although they would top 148 mph... Now there is food for thought but as I did not fancy tea and biscuits with the Boss well need I say more.. 1 Rail125

I've never done a long journey on an HST. Just a quick one between Reading and Paddington where I was pretty much standing; or spent the journey talking to the bloke running the buffet car; scoring a free croque monsieur that would've gone in the bin.

The 125 was probably the best Inter City train ever built. Done quite a few trips from Paddington to Penzance, and also Kings Cross to Edinburgh and beyond. Very comfortable seating, and the ride was always smooth. Probably the next best train, was the 225 class. But give me the 125 any day. Even on a busy train, you never felt uncomfortable, as there was always plenty of room in the carriages.

Thanks for this. I did Paddington to Penzance in 1996 when Great Western Trains took over as the first TOC on the GWR, first class was sumptuous then compared to the horrific Class 802 video you just posted. My longest HST ride was Aberdeen-King's Cross, 8hrs onboard a HST with at seat dining restaurant car and a la carte menu. Back in those GNER days members of the Excel loyalty programme would receive a free half bottle of wine with any meal. The dining was Pullman quality even though the Pullman brand was no longer used. Great video thanks

I’m surprised that power operated doors and toilet tanks weren’t fitted at half life overhaul. It was done to the Chiltern loco hauled Mk 3 sets which apart from couplings and electrical supply are pretty similar, so it should have been possible.

I would love to see if 125 group could get different HST sets from different TOCs. It would be awesome if they could do a FGW dynamic lines set, or a VTEC set. Another cool thing they could do is form a train with mk3s from different operators, so each carriage is a different TOC/era in time. Starting with the original BR interior of course, and each coach having a little description of the interior design. Also, what ever happened to the LNER HST in the farewell livery? They should get their hands on that!

  • @cjmillsnun

The problem with that is storage. Also, good luck finding original Mk3 light fittings and moquette. The LNER farewell set is still in storage and is apparently in very poor condition.

Nice work and thanks for this video. I am pleased that the best passenger train in the world is preserved. I grew up with these HST's from childhood until 2017 when I left England. Those Valenta's in the 1980's and 1990's used to sound like a bit like the older Boeing 707's on takeoff! But man I love these trains to this day. Although I have not been on a Class 800 series. From what I have seen on KZread is that the seating on those are hard and the seats look like Ironing boards to say it nicely. Anyway. I am appreciative that I was around to enjoy growing up with these iconic beasts and I hope to see one set in Intercity Executive livery in the future and I might come to England again to ride these on the Midland Railway. As for transport. I will just take an Uber from Alfreton station to the Midland Railway. Fun times ahead. I have subbed by the way and please do more videos.

Also the instructions next to the door of HST. It said wait until unlocked door light on, pull window down and turn handle (outside) to open door. That reminded of Southern Railway's slam doors trains has similar (turn handle outside to open door) in 1990s except central locking system, unlike Essex's slam doors (Class 302, 310 and 312) can push tab behind the door to open.

We went to Butterly last year on 22nd October just before Halloween. We went on the class 141 spooky train and our last stop was Alfreton where we saw the 125 stationed there. It may have been most shortest train trip back fourth that we’ve been on regarding travelling on other heritage train routes we did enjoy it on the spooky train. Sad part is we missed going on it just by few days but I heard it ran into problems so they stopped services. From what I’m hearing Butterly might be putting it back in service once fixed but not sure when. Still nice day trip out exploring what Butterly & parts around it had to offer.

I was visiting on one of the running days. Coach D wasn't in the formation, not to mention Coach D isn't a disabled carriage, its Coach E (standard) and Coach G on the ex-emr stock.. The formations on running days was Coach B,H,F,G,F. B being standard, F being buffet cars, G being the disabled carriage, and H being 1st. Unless you are referring to Coach D as the 4th carriage then you are technically correct.

I honestly wonder why these decades-old diesel nightmares aren't where they belong yet: ON THE SCRAPYARD. I guess the necessary rolling stock to replace them simply isn't there. But that's not a very good excuse. This locomotive/train type was a PR-lie from the very beginning. "The fastest diesel train in the world". COME ON!!!! No other advanced railway nation was building diesel high speed trains anymore at the time. It was all electric. It's easy to be the "fastest" when there's no competition in that category (simply because nobody even wanted to!!). This train which is so beloved by railway enthusiats (Yes, I know!!) is actually a symbol of failure and a reflection of Britain's economic crisis in the 1970s (no money for electrification). Fun fact (although not really funny): Back in the 1980s the electrification of the ENTIRE EAST COAST MAINLINE was done for about 380 million pounds. How many more electrification schemes could have been done without the HST or the failed ATP?? Mistakes that had a decades-long desasterous impact were made back then.
